    Another fantastic video! High quality production, approachable topic, and great sense of humor.
    I think this video highlights why so many people say they don't like Pinot Noir, because they're having cheap or manufactured Pinot. Of course, with some great searching, you can find some quality Pinot for under $30, but it will have to be at your local wine shop, not Trader Joe's.
    Would love to see you explore Costco wines more! I hear some the Kirkland labels can be really good for the price, including the Oakville, Gigondas, and Barolo.

    Welcome to RUclips, Dustin! Great content, and I happily subscribed to your channel. Please go on with this series. It's "easy" to taste and talk about high-end wine, but such content has little value for a wide audience. It's much more useful to learn about good value wines. I think you chose a great niche so far.
    I noticed you sometimes ask your audience for suggestions for future videos. For my layman palate, there are several decent cheap red Italian wines at TJ. I believe red Italian TJ wines would make for an interesting video. I expect fewer wines to end up in the D-F range. Cheers!

    you actually drank every wine and didn't spit?! props lol

    • @wineguydustin
      @wineguydustin  Месяц назад

      So I did spit off camera, but actually the correct method is not to completely spit out all of the wine. The correct method is to reduce the amount of wine that you ingest by spitting. This is important because you do need to drink some of it to give a full review of the experience of drinking the wine. In an ideal world, one would spit out about 75% of each taste. But I always err on the side of booze so I try to spit out half of it or less!

      Also, thank you for the insight on Meiomi owning Belle Gloss. It kinda hurts my heart a bit to hear that since Belle was the only one that had any character in this tasting. Clearly that means Meiomi KNOWS how to produce some decent wine but they are choosing not to for their own production. Wild!

  • @itsmederek1

    Sorry for commenting only 4 mins in but the color of US Pinot is also dependant on what other grapes are blended in. Only 75% legally needs to be the varietal on the label and it is common practice to blend in a bit of Petit Syrah or something else for color. Meiomi is known to do this and that wine is a war crime

    • @wineguydustin
      @wineguydustin  Месяц назад

      Hahahahahaha. This was such a joy to read. You were so helpful and insightful up front - truly great reminder on the US 75% varietal labeling laws and how much blending a touch of petite Syrah, (I call it the Batman of grapes), will change the final tint. Then you just subverted all of my expectations and absolutely destroyed Meiomi.
      I love that these compliments have turned into a public roast of Meiomi. So obviously, it sucked for me in the tasting. But what’s been your experience with it? lol how did Meiomi hurt you?

    • @wineguydustin
      @wineguydustin  Месяц назад

      Thank you so much for the encouragement and support! That’s an awesome question too! So, I’ve read quite a bit about this. There is no doubt that palate fatigue is a real thing. Professional wine critics actually struggle quite a bit with it. But from what I’ve read that tends to more be more of an issue when attending a massive wine tasting conference where upwards of 100 wines are being served AND they are different varietals (so the loud wines end up taking away from the experience tasting the quiet wines). In this case, considering the total number at 21 and all the wines being Pinot Noirs, I don’t think palate fatigue is too much of an issue. Of course, this sounds like it could be a great premise for a video! I could test how long it takes for palate fatigue to kick in. What do you think about that idea?

    One more comment (after working 10 years at TJ’s), TJ’s is a good place to discover many different wines from many corners of the globe. In general, none of the wines are spectacular, but for a few bucks you can discover a drinkable Aglianico and then discover a drinkable GSM. My every day goal was to convince a wine buyer to try something new they haven’t tried. Based on my palate, I gained a great following amongst the customers.

    • @wineguydustin
      @wineguydustin  Месяц назад

      That’s amazing! I really appreciate the approach you took! I can only imagine how satisfying it was to introduce someone to something ENTIRELY new. A GSM is an awesome example of that! I actually bought a few GSMs from TJs and Costco last week. I’m thinking of maybe putting together a vs video with them. What do you think about that idea?

    • @danf321
      @danf321 Месяц назад

      @ That comparison sounds great. TJ’s has some GSM wines with no GSM on the label (Tenebres & Pontificis), while they also have a few under their own labels of different qualities. Costco had a few great GSM wines, but they come and go. TJ’s also has a few hidden gems that may qualify as a GSM with the Spanish Satis Dei (Syrah and Garnacha).

    After watching the full vid :) Loved the video, you are very funny, snappy clean editing and you are clearly solid at tasting. Format was good and very much appreciate you slogging through a pile of shit for the viewers, probably useful reviews for many consumers in the US.
    Would have maybe liked a short section at the end where you present some conclusions you made from reviewing the results of the tasting. IE brand x underpreformed, never spend under y, dont buy pinot in supermarket but if you have to get wine a or b etc. Also because you mention the house brand in the intro its nice to give your thoughts seperately at the end after knowing what it is. Not super important but its nice to have a sort of ending or payoff imo.
    2 small questions. Did you know for the blind tasting that everything was in order from cheap to expensive or was the tasting order random and edited to be that way in the video?
    What is your background in wine? I see that in one video you call yourself a sommelier but more specifically like any WSET/COS stuff or years of fine dining experience? I dont doubt your knowledge would just love to know.
    Very entertaining and good quality content. Will be following in the future

      Aw buddy thank you so much for all of the feedback and the encouragement! I’m so glad the full video hit home for you!
      I definitely am going to work on adding more summaries and conclusions into my videos. This feedback has come up a few times so I want to make sure I give folks what they’re looking for!
      As for the other questions, no I did not know the order when I actually tasted them. I tasted them in real life in a completely random order. For example, belle glos was actually the second wine I tasted. So it’s a true blind tasting! I just edited it to be cheap to expensive to give the video some better progression!
      Second, my cert is with the Master Court. I’m no industry professional, though. I’m a hobbyist. My actual career is in corporate consulting not working in the hospitality industry. I fell in love with wine many years ago and have always felt like more people could fall in love with it like I have if only the culture around it was less snobby and complicated. So I want to try to change that!

      @@wineguydustin Really loving the engagement. The way you planned the blind tasting is actually fantastic. It makes the tasting random for you but provides structure for the viewer. Impressed you thought of this as no big blind tasting channels are doing that(yet). Feel free to treat yourself to some good wine in the next video, you've earned it ;P

      I’m so glad you appreciate that! It’s definitely a lot of extra work to pull it off. I really want to make sure that the end result is a high quality review that the audience can use to make informed decisions for themselves. If even one person discovers a great value wine that they wouldn’t have checked out otherwise then this whole thing is definitely worth it to me!

    Hi there!
    You did some pretty good video editing. But most of all I enjoyed your review of these wines. You're doing a great job, although I was pretty surprised, that some got the same grade even though your reaction was quite different.
    I don't know much about wine, my "dealer" just keeps me trying some stuff and he's pretty good in guessing what I'm liking, I guess. Although I'm a bit hesitant in trying the really pricy wines. ^^

    Did you expect an A in this group? What would be a $10 Pinot recommendation

    • @wineguydustin
      @wineguydustin  Месяц назад

      I honestly didn’t expect to find an A. But I didn’t expect to find so many Cs and Ds. I thought the overall average of this group would be closer to a C+ or B-. It seemed in reality like it was closer to a D or C-.
      One big one win though was finding that Moon X bottle! It was tied for second place and costs only $7! So I definitely recommend it!
      Otherwise, I think I would cheat a bit and recommend a Beaujolais Nouveau like Louis Jadot if I was limited to only $10. It’s a cheat because even though it’s from burgundy, it’s made with gamay instead of Pinot noir (wines from burgundy are typically Pinot noir). I think these are bangin wines for $10!

    Subscribed!!!! I hope this channel takes off. I've always thought a RUclips channel like this about wine was a no-brainer. You say you're "snobby," but you're not snobby because you are tasting these very seriously. It would be more snobby/dismissive to judge these wines *less* seriously because they are from trader Joe's. There is drinking in pinot noirs in this price range; I just wish you could have found it here. Off the top of head, Louis Jadot Bourgogne is widely available and great value for ~$20-25.
    You're too kind on Meiomi, though, labelling it as a "beginner pick.". Even if very beginners like it, it's not a good wine. Whether people will like it is a different question than whether the wine is good or bad... and Meiomi is bad. I may like an Adam Sandler comedy film and find it funny, but judging those movies on things that critics look for, such as plot and cinematography, they fall flat.
    I do wish at the end there was a little bit of a wrap-up though. A few final recommendations at different price ranges of the best and worst. It seemed like "Moon X" was the winner for super cheap pinot noir, but maybe none of these were worth recommending? I would like a bit more talk after you know the price of each bottle. Which wine is good value for money and which ones to stay away from.

      Whoa! This was such an incredible, thoughtful, and helpful comment!! I really appreciate the feedback! I definitely will work in more wrap ups and summaries at the end. My concern though is that the video is already 30 mins long. Do you think it will be negatively impacted if I add these segments? I’m worried if the watch time is 35 or 40 mins I might start losing people. Curious of your thoughts? Thank you so much for your support!!

    I have tried several of these wines, and I agree with almost every word. most of these resemble cough syrup. and none of these wines actually impress. trader joes excels at cheaper italians and portuguese wines. some of the GSMs are worth seeking out. don't touch any of the more expensive Bordeaux ($20+) wines. simply not worth it. it's unfortunate that the more expensive wines don't over-deliver at trader joe's. never buy pinot from this place. it's just a good rule of thumb.
