Some viewers confused my "90% of the fun for 30% of the price" statement with my MX5, which is incorrect. For that to be true, my MX5 would have to be worth at least $100k. My statement is actually in reference to the Boxster and Cayman. :-) *UPDATE: I bought a 981 Boxster in October 2022. 🙂
I understand what you are saying. BUT... for me the Porsche is just what my soul needed and I am blessed to have the means to afford one. You are a top man and your family are lucky to have you. Look forward to seeing and hearing more from you!
Thank you! And I can relate. I mentioned getting 90% of the experience for 30% of the cost. The car I’m thinking of isn’t the MX5 (that would make it over $100k); but a 2-5 year old 718. My soul needs a Porsche, too. 👍
Lovely video. Bought my first Porsche (a Cayman S) in 2009 when my kids were 4 & 6 … so a second car. The only marque I’ve driven since. Through Caymans, Cayennes & a 991 it’s been magical. Now at 60 years old Ive just ordered a 992 Targa 4S. The dream continues.
Mark - that sounds utterly delightful. I’ve been a Benz driver for almost 20 years (sold my last two - a CLK430 cabriolet & a GL320) about 3 years ago to buy the MX5 & Pajero. I feel like it’s time to finally step up the brand that’ll satisfy my sports driving ‘needs’ through to the end - Porsche. Like you, I’ll start with a Cayman or Boxster, and see where it leads. I’m going to rent a 718 S for a weekend and see how I feel at the end of it. I already know the answer, though. 😉 Oh, and a 992 Targa 4S; a rolling work of art. 👍
I enjoyed your video. I’ve been a driving enthusiast for most of my adult life and always drove some sort of a performance car. From a ‘79 Corvette to ‘84 VW GTI to ‘87 BMW 635 CSI, I’ve always enjoyed cars that eagerly went around the bend. With a bit of success in my career, I moved onto ‘97 993 C2S and owned a number of Porsches including a 996 GT3. What I can share about my experience with all these cars is that I found Porsches to be among the best engineered cars I’ve ever owned (all 38 of them) and that they have a unique set of characteristics that is highly enjoyable. And each model, while superseded by the next gen model, tends to maintain its desirability even as it ages. For such a high performance car, Porsches are relatively affordable to maintain and they are highly durable, comparing them to some of the other European high performance cars. I currently own a 2020 718 Spyder and it is by far the most enjoyable car I’ve owned to run up and down the California coast and its canyons. I can’t think of another car that I would enjoy driving as much as this Spyder. And that is just me. I am sure others enjoy their C8’s, Zs, or BMW M’s, or McLarens, etc. If you are a driving enthusiast and you have a car you love to drive, whatever car it may be, I think it’s worth all the money you are spending on it. As for me, I am now older and I may look for something more age appropriate but it will still likely be another Porsche. So, enjoy the car you have and have fun motoring!
Thank you for your generous and thoroughly engaging comment. So much of what you share fascinates me, and I'm grateful you took the time to write this. I especially relate to: "If you are a driving enthusiast and you have a car you love to drive, whatever car it may be, I think it’s worth all the money you are spending on it." Bravo.
Wow Peter! Such a cool experience! As a kid I used to daydream about Porsche’s and frequently collected the toy hotwheels. So cool to see you driving one and get an up close gel for driving one. Must’ve been really fun to do with your son as well. Glad you got to do that!
Yep, it wouldn’t have been half as much fun without my boy. It’s funny, I was never a ‘Porsche guy’ growing up, but these days, I find then desperately attractive. For me, though, I reckon it’s gonna be a Boxster or Cayman. They’re just so good these days, they’ve almost rendered the 911 moot (and definitely over priced - at least on my budget!). 😄
I was one of the first people to do the Porsche drive experience with the 992 Carrera 4S. Like you, I've always lusted after a 911, but unlike you though, it only made me want one more! I'm happy to say I'm nearly there in my quest. Yes, it's a borderline ridiculous expense, but rolling a new model 911 out of my garage a couple of times a month is an indulgence I need in my life 😊
Man thanks for sharing this so much. I was able to reminisce about my childhood riding fast with my dad then being able to drive him fast as an adult. Ooh What memories🤙
I loved this video Peter! What a fun and exciting adventure to share with your son! I have a love of sports cars myself. Three years ago when I moved from snowy Colorado to North Carolina, I was excited to get rid of my AWD Ford Fusion (which did have a turbo) for a Nissan 370Z and I have never regretted it. I can honestly say, when I drive my car...it still makes me happy! 😀
Thanks, Acacia. Ah, yes, the 370Z is a great car! There’s certainly something about sports cars that make life just a little bit better. They keep us young. 😄
Poor old Aussies. I'm an Aussie in the US, and the 911 is less than half the price here (in local currency). My 991.2 GTS was ~130K (new) here, and at the time I bought it (2019) it was retailing for $350K in Aus. This is why I can't ever go back.. No 911s :(
LOL. In the end, I just bought a 981 Boxster. I drove it the same roads, and actually preferred its balance and reduced power, which allowed me to wring its neck more! 😄
You say Porsche isn’t worth the $$$ . What supercar is worth the money . Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti ? No But Porsche 911 is the one car that does it all and if not better than other super cars at a far less of a price !
I agree. The 911 just isn’t worth it for ME. I look at it this way: 1. Anything is worth exactly what someone wants to pay. 2. There’s no way any of us could build our own 911 for $350k, so on that basis alone, it’s brilliant value. 3. Compared to a McLaren/Lamborghini/Ferrari, the 911 is better built, more usable, and better value for money. 4. Ultimately, everything is relative. Right now, relative to my financial position, the 911 isn’t worth the asking price - for me. 🙂
@@touayaaj84 I don’t care how popular something is. Being different used to matter to me when I was young and I cared what others thought of me - but not anymore. If something is brilliant but also happens to be popular, that’s fine - I don’t care. I buy sports cars for how they make me feel on a tight mountain road, not for the attention (or lack thereof) they might draw. 👍
Bruh I would’ve fought a raging bull to have been driving a lamborghini at 18. That photo of the r32, 911 and nsx is amazing, wallpaper stuff too. I have to check out some of these roads. Driving is imo the greatest joy and the funnest activity a person can do in the 21st century, maybe sex or being a fighter pilot measures up but idk. Being in a good car definitely makes a difference, but imo a steering wheel, pedals and going as fast as you can (while being safe) is already 50% of it. Well made video as always, and great driving too.
I so relate to your comments, Lachlan. After 47 years of driving (37 of them, legally), few things bring me as much joy and satisfaction as operating a car. Even a shitty one. It’s something that few things can touch. I expect flying does a similar thing for pilots; as does riding for motorcyclists (something I’ve also loved most of my life). And of course, it’s not just the cars and the driving; it’s the freedoms, the adventures, and the people around this whole industry and culture. I love all of it. Thanks for dropping in, mate. Stay safe, and enjoy your life. 👍
This is a great video. I have spent my life dreaming of a 911 and only recently realised that dream with this model. I will hold it for a year or two and then perhaps consider an MX5. Cheers
Thanks for that! Before you get the MX-5, try the 718 Boxster or Cayman GTS 4.0-litre. It's REALLY good! I ended up buying a 981 Boxster, and it's brilliant!
It's quaint: my son prefers the MX-5 over the 981 or the 997 S for similar reasons. The value proposition and liveliness on street was his reasoning. I still prefer the 981... but maybe someday we will have both! :D This video brought joy seeing you and your son ride around. Thanks for uploading. The 992 is a dream car for most of us watching. And I had a hunch I would arrive at a similar conclusion as you did.
Thanks, Wes. As it turns out, my son wants an MX5 himself. As for the 992, I’ve recently learned that 95% of the parts in the 981 are stamped ‘911’, so it’s essentially a mid-engined 911, anyway! 😄
Good stuff, Steve! Whereabouts? I grew up in Mt Martha. Are you referring to the Eildon-Jamieson Road? It’s my favourite of all time (and I’ve driven some rippers).
In my opinion, you hit the nail on the head with the price / reward summary. A 911 has always been my dream car but if I bought one I would worry about it getting vandalised when parked and resent the high maintenence, running and insurance cost, even if I can afford it, its ultimately not worth it to me. May be I will hire or lease one to scatch the itch as youd did.
@@grahamgraham4263 I’d definitely rent one, Graham. But then rent a Cayman or Boxster, too (GTS 6-cylinder). You might make the same decision many of us have made.
What a great film! Yes, i just cannot believe that the car would be 10 times an M5 even if prettier. And I am glad that you had your chance, and with your kid.
Thanks. I wasn't referring to the MX5 in that statement. My MX5 - with MCA coilovers, strut braces and other mods, is probably 40% of the 911 driving experience on a winding road. I didn't drop model names in the video that could deliver 90% of the 911 experience (I was going to do that in a future video), but it's the Cayman and Boxster I'm referring to. :-)
Try close to $165k plus another 40K in the USA currently. Its not so much the price or what its worth but the experience of owning one. Best thing is you can buy one these days and actually sell it for above ur purchase price.
@@Willfindeww It’s amazing right now. All my cars are worth 20-30% more than I paid for them a few years ago! If I suddenly decided to quit driving and switch to a bicycle, I’d be laughing! But you’re right - value and cost are two very different things. For now, I’ll go 718. The 911 can come later. 👍😄
@@peterfritzphoto not at all, it's just fair. That thing you said about pricey cars having to deliver every day to justify the price it's just brilliant, but a fair priced car can surprise you every day, that's just brilliant..!! I'm in my 40s and I haven't realized that, thank you very much for putting it so clear for me. (that was insightful and deep). I'm subscribing..!!! Hahahaha...!!!
$350k? DId I hear right? FOr this $ you get the most expensive version of the 911 Turbo S cabrio or whatever. How far down has the Aussie $ gone? Or are expensive cars taxed to death there?
It was a real blast - but sooo much better sharing it with my son! I’m already planning my next rental - but something a bit cheaper this time. Life is short. 😄👍
@@peterfritzphoto if life is short surely it should be a tad more expensive 🤣 how about a Sherman tank (just think of all those off road photography opportunities 🤣🤣🤣) 🙏
the Eildon Jamieson Road, driven too many times to remember but usually mid winter in very utilitarian stalker’s transport, I do envy your journey in such an excellent vehicle ✅
But you really want the 911s I am picking up a 2019 911s for gbp 95k on Thursday. Only 18000 miles on the clock and in great condition from Porsche directly. Includes 2 year warranty plus alloy and paint protection. Mine is silver and moderately equipped.
Congratulations! How exciting!! Yes, there’s no denying I’m trapped in the 911’s spell. But even though I can afford one, I think, for now at least, the Cayman S or Boxster S will be my first Porsche. I don’t want to go straight from being a virgin, to sleeping with the ultimate porn star. So so speak…
@@peterfritzphoto LOL I feel the same. I am a big fan of the cayman s too! Not so much the boxster. Ofcourse this is subjective. I know what you mean. I could have gone for’a new cayman S but I couldn’t pass on the 911. The price of a new 911s moderately equipped is a bit to much but I think a new shape 911s 2019 is something that just tips the scales for me personally. Nothing wrong with any of the porsches we are discussing. They are all wonderful drives. Once I sat in the 911s I was just “i want this car” lol. I think that the 911 has that iconic shape too so for each new shape the changes are rather minimal so it always looks like you are driving a relatively new car. I can afford it and I’m going to be 50!in November. Life’s too short imo. I’m going to get what I want for a change instead of compromise. My current car is a 2016 c43amg coupe. It’s beautiful but the Porsche 911 is on a completely different level!
@@anonymoushuman8962 I totally get it. I’ll probably reach a point where I just say, “Bugger it, I must have the 911!” As for the other two, I’m torn. I much prefer the look of the Cayman. The proportions are just right. But I usually drive my MX-5 with my son, and we both love peeling the roof off - especially on mountain drives like the one in the video. Argh…!
@@peterfritzphoto I think the main point is that you are enjoying the mx5. It’s lovely to see you and your son enjoy those beautiful roads. I have a friend who has one and they are extremely quick. The only issue I had was getting in and out of the thing. It was like sitting in in a lotus Elise. Someone had to actually lift me out of the car lmao. I am 6ft 1” and about 120kg. It goes without saying it was a tough fit. The Porsches are slightly better for me but the 911, although still quite tight is a bit of a better and snugger fit. At least I don’t have to climb out of the thing lol.
@@anonymoushuman8962 Haha! Yeah, I’m a short-arse, so I fit just fine. A mate of mine is at least 6ft 4 inches, and he cannot get in the MX-5 for love or money.
I think I want to buy a new Carrara S. I just am not willing to pay a premium over sticker price. I bought a 70k new BMW m440i xdrive a few months ago and love it. Still, I guess I have money burning a hole in my pocket and want a porsche. I hope If I wait a couple months the feeling will subside. The markup is rediculous her in the US, but 350k... Wow. Thanks for sharing. It looks like you really had fun with it.
I really wanted one, too - even just to look at it every day. But there’s better value (and possibly an even better driving experience on the roads I like) with a Cayman or Boxster. I’m going to get either a 981 or 718. My son and I had a ball! Life is short! 👍😄
@@peterfritzphoto Oh cool. I thought you decided on not getting any Porsche. The 718 cayman is fun to drive. I test drove one. The base 4cyl turbo is a bit weak imo, but it handles unbelievably well. Since my m440i x only has 6k miles on it, I probably don't need to add a car, but I got the Porsche bug now. A 911 Carerra S is what I want. I really like a limited back seat.
No, a lot of people got that impression from the video, which is why I added a pinned comment and more details in the description. I don't think the C2S is good value for me - not compared to the Cayman or Boxster, anyway. Compared to McLaren, Lamborghini or Ferrari, though, it's great value. If money's no object, then the point is moot, and I always believe something is worth whatever you're prepared to pay. After all, it cost billions to develop the 911, so on that score alone, it's a bargain. I might well get a 911 later on, but for now, the Boxster will be my next sports car.
If you ever drove a BMW m440i xdrive, it definitely doesn't handle like a porsche. its powerful and a great daily driver, but it handles like a 4100 lb sports sedan. Go get that Cayman or Boxter and have a ball every day!
2024 Carrrera s is the best car for its price . Optioned out to $165000 as a manual transmission car with is the only kind of sport car I would buy . So please find me another that I can compare with
Gorgeous car and the sound of the engine is amazing but the pricetag not so much😬😀. I couldn’t recognise that skinny handsome young man in those photos….get them printed LARGE for motivation haha. Great video mate!😊
This is all the 911 any one should NEED. Agreed. Spending more is pointless for "everday driving" on city/suburbanhwy roads with a driver who as at best "average (street)" driving skill (doesn't compete on closed road race tracks...which is most of us). Your last point...is the Porsche 8x better....no car is. I'd say maybe at most 50 percent better and noticeable. Mostly the experiences are just "different" (e.g. different engine/exhaust note, comfort, features on the NAV screen....). Is this car so much better than let's say a new Mini Cooper JCW? Subjective. Some might prefer the Mini Cooper as it should be more nimble in tight spaces...maybe more "practical"? Bu if some one wants the "911 exerpience" i'd say the C2S is IT :) Does eeryting most people should want in a "everyday drive car".
For me, at Australian prices, a new 911 is only a money-no-object car. It's certainly not a sell-my-left-plum car. I used to think it was, but my 10-year-old Boxster has proven a much wiser choice - for me.
My first sports car will be a Porsche 911 992 turbo s or the 911 992 Carrera S..... Porsche 911 992 Carrera S is a upgrade from Porsche. They made it much more aggressively and sporty than the 911 992 Turbo S. Well done to Porsche for improving the 911 992.🙏❤️👍
Unless you’re used to high-horsepower cars (to the point of ‘needing’ more), the base Carrera is all the sports car anyone needs - especially if you enjoy pushing a car through twisty roads at moderately sane speeds. If you just want to go from 0-100 fast, you’d be better off with a Taycan or Tesla. 😉
personally, I wouldn't buy a Porsche to compare it to a Mazda's value or whatever lower-cost sports car. I'm buying it for the fact that it's a Porsche and YOLO. To each their own, right ;-) cheers. Great review and thank you for the post.
I must have missed something. Why was Tommy shattered? Did he want to drive? 😆 350k Australian? I'll try to convert that to US. Still to much I'm sure but in 50 years it still won't have any rattles and squeaks.
Tommy was shattered because I’d just decided (and was telling him at that moment) that I’d decided I no longer ‘needed’ a 911. Funny you should mention him wanting to drive. He’s DESPERATE to begin driving. I actually started driving when I was three years younger than him, so I know exactly how he feels! 😄
@@peterfritzphoto How old is he? I started driving big farm trucks when I was 13 or 14. I also remember sitting in a family friends lap steering an old Packard. I may have been 10 at the time. The sun was in my eyes so almost went in the ditch. 😆
@@wernerdanler2742 LOL. Tommy is 11. I’ve already given him a few driving lessons out in the bush, and he’s very comfortable behind the wheel. @@peterfritzphoto I'm 73 and still enjoy driving, fast! Lol. My dad never taught me anything about anything. I've had a lot of cars in my life. Started with American hotrods and then European cars. Now I have a 2001 mercedes e320 sport. Love it. Needs paint but runs great.
@@wernerdanler2742 That’s the spirit! Parents are pot luck. My dad’s dad was a violent arsehole. My mum’s mum was the same. Amazingly, I ended up with two fantastic parents. Wonderful video. This is how I feel about my 2005 MINI R50 (that I've owned from new). While I LOVE 911s and would not say no if someone offered me one, my MINI delivers so much joy both in terms of driving, and making improvements to the car and performing routine maintenance is a relaxing and rewarding hobby. There are other things my wife and I want to do with our money: travel, pay off our mortgage early so we can retire early, possibly buy a second property, etc. Like the 911, my car has a center-mounted tachometer with a digital speedometer, it has frameless windows and leather seats, it is ideal for two people and all their kit, and it handles like a race car. In sunny conditions and through the worst Canadian winters have to offer, I have travelled to all points in North America in my MINI: Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Chicago, Phoenix, and more! The most important thing about a car is the joy it delivers, and you don't need a car that's as expensive as a house to get that.
First off, thank you for your comments. I completely relate to everything you’ve said. My brother-in-law and I have both owned twin-turbo MKIV Supras (he still has his, and it has over 1,000 HP at the wheels), yet we both enjoy our slower, sportier cars - me in my MX5, and him, ironically, in his R50 Mini!
@@ed5616 I’ve heard many others say the 981 GTS is as close to perfect as Porsche drivers’ cars get. I think of my 981 Boxster as one step away from perfection.
@@AGC828 I’m in Australia - the prices I mentioned were correct at time of recording. And the MX5 comparison had specific context. It wasn’t a one-to-one comparison. In either case, I went on to buy a Boxster, which is a better driver’s car than the 911.
Okay, now get your paws on a TURBO S and tell me that it's not worth the money! (not that i've driven one, but i feel like that thing is worth a million dollars in my imagination)
LOL. Yeah, I dunno. Too much power can start to ruin the fun - there are just so few places you can use it. Having driven a few hyper fast cars - including a 1000hp (at the wheels) Supra - it actually shortens those periods of excitement because each corner shows up way too quickly. Sadly, I can’t rent a Turbo or Turbo S in Melbourne anyway! 😄
@@peterfritzphoto that's so true! I love my e46 330 for that reason! Although on straights I wish it had double the power, it doesn't decrease the fun too much
@@Mattyew It’s a constant psychological battle. I recently bought a 981 Boxster, and I reckon it has *almost* enough power… 😄. The 330 is a gorgeous looking car - from when BMWs had real style. I had an E34 535, and just loved the look of it.
Australians pay up to 185 percent more for cars than consumers in the United States. This figure is relevant whether you are looking for a simple family vehicle or a luxury car. By some estimates, the sticker price for a BMW M3 in the US is $88,368 (US$59,977.11), but the same model costs a minimum of $139,615 (US$94,759.47) in Australia. Costs grow even further for models like the Porsche Carrera S. The Australian government imposes a luxury car tax on vehicles like this, pushing up the price that is already more expensive than it is elsewhere in the world. What's more, luxury car tax and general car prices make vehicles more expensive even if they are produced in Australia. Take the Commodore SS, for example, which costs up to $10,000 more in Australia even though it's manufactured right here in the country. Wow
I totally disagree, if price was not a problem you would still be driving the 911 , 20-30-40 years from know there will still be great value in your Porsche ❤️✌️
After sampling this 992, I bought a 981 Boxster 2 months ago. Last week, I drove it along all the same roads as the 911, and in many respects, it was actually better. The steering, the on-limit handling, and the overall driving experience were stellar. And, at $80k, it was just 25% of the price. 😄
Nice video up to the point when you said it was not worth the money that it cost etc. That was a downer for me. I'm good with saying something like, if your finances ever give you that luxury. Enjoy, but if not, there's so much joy in the Miata etc that you won't be missing out. Something along those lines. I don't know anyone, especially a 🫣male who has always desired a 911. Unless they've had the opportunity to command one that dream still exists in the back of their mind where wishes lay. We all have our priorities in life. That's a given. A Porsche 911 is not. 🤗
@@oliverthorne1653 At $330,000, the 911 is overpriced - certainly compared to the Boxster and Cayman, which actually comprise 95% 911 parts. So, I now own a Boxster, and in many ways, it’s actually better than the 911. And it’s less than half the price. Believe it or not, it actually costs Porsche more to make a Boxster than a 911.
@@peterfritzphoto Thank you for clarifying! At that price level, I have to agree with you a 100%. In the US, we are looking at about half that price, which makes your comparison a tad more challenging.
Mmm, I’ve driven a lot of cars, and I’m not convinced. Not while the Cayman & Boxster exist. But each to their own. That said, my MX5 is now heavily modified to make it steer and handle better, with MCA coil overs, a strut brace front and rear, Pilot Sports, etc., so I’m not really comparing the 992 with a stock MX5. Yes, the 911 makes you feel like a million dollars, and the engine is a masterpiece, but on the Black Spur or the Eildon-Jamieson road, my MX5 is extremely capable. The 911 might still end up in my garage one day, but for now, I’m more likely to park a Cayman or Boxster S in there. 👍😄
@@peterfritzphoto I was kidding really. I have a 991.1 and a 992 on the way. My plan is to sell both of them to break even. I have much more fun with my $4k sur ron electric bike than my cars. The issue is I live in a congested area and just can’t drive spiritedly without someone in front of me. Expensive cars just cost too much for what you get back.
@@er98ah You nailed it. It’s funny, I’ve driven the Black Spur and E-J Road probably 500 times, and yet the only place I ever see a Lamborghini, Ferrari or Mclaren, is in the burbs or the city. For pure driving fun, there’s nothing better than a modestly powered, great handling car that begs you to ring its neck. The 911 barely broke a sweat my whole weekend. Which makes it brilliant, but kind of elusive, too. The barrier to fun is just too high to breach most of the time. However, if money was no object, I’d gladly park one in my garage just to stare at it. Scratch that. In the house. On a turntable! 😄
This is why they shouldn't let journalists who can't afford the cars into them. they won't get it. People with money have different needs and requirements.
That porsche lacks the naturally aspirated boxer engine, i love Porsche, but the turbo models and also now, the "regular" line up of 911's, lacks sound. The sweet spot in today's Porsches, relies on the gt models, and also the cayman and boxster 4.0 . Period
You didn't watch the whole thing, did you? I said in the video that I *could* afford to buy this Porsche (with cash), but didn't see the value in pulling $330k from our bank account to buy it. Also, I bought a great Porsche for much less after I made this video.
Yep - it's a balance between "Life is short," and "Geez, you could do so much more with that money." I know - that's why I've invested in real estate and index funds for decades, and donate every month to multiple charities. But the time has come where I'm starting to consider the "Life is short" mantra with a bit more focus.
LOL! I must admit, I get the most pleasure from my cheapest car - the Nissan Elgrand that I converted into a camper van. All up, it cost less than $20k, yet it’s super comfortable, quiet, practical and capable - even off-road.
Hey, Steve - I notice a few people have drawn the same assumption from my video, but I actually don’t compare them in the video. The ‘90% of the experience for 30% of the price’ isn’t in reference to the MX5. If it was, that would mean the MX5 costs over $100,000. In any case my MX5 is quite heavily modified (MCA coil overs, strut braces, exhaust, etc.), so it drives extremely well on windy roads. BTW, have you driven the 992 and the ND MX5? What did u think of them?
@@peterfritzphoto Hi Pete, I haven’t driven Mazda car’s or MX 5 before the nearest to it was Toyota MR2, I had 997.2 4S, 991.2 GTS and now I drive 992. Turbo S. Thanks a lot, Steve. It's good to see someone sharing their thoughts based on real world experience - at least with the 911 and Cayman. Actually on that, it's the 718 Cayman/Boxster I'm planning to buy - they're cars I was actually thinking of when making the 90% fun for 30% cost assumption. Since you're experienced with both machines, do you think it's a fair assumption to make? I'm planning to buy one of them (still can't decide!) for my birthday next year. I agree with you on the issue of practicality. Even though my 11-year-old son was cramped in the back of the Carrera, it was doable. And of course the luggage space is far better than most sports/super cars.
@@peterfritzphoto No worries Pete, agree it’s good to share thoughts and experiences together in this real world. For me, I would prefer Cayman than Boxster all because I admire its curve lines coupe design of Cayman’s and that I’m not a huge fan of soft tops depending on the type of car. Also, if you are located in Australia you do have advantage of the better weather ☀️so Boxster would be ideal but both models are very enjoyable to drive can’t go wrong. Good luck with your choices and I won’t worry too much about practicality as I see you also have a 4x4 👍
@@stevesworks1391 That’s my quandary. I do like a convertible in the mountains or along the coast, but absolutely love the lines of the Cayman. It’s a first-world problem, so I’m sure I’ll be happy with either. 😉👍
It depends how lazy I’m feeling. Sometimes Porsch-a, sometimes Porsh. I think the problem is, many in Australia take the lazy approach, and it’s rubbed off on me. Even some of the motoring journos I used to work with used the butchered version.
@@lopp5391 I look at it this way: 1. Anything is worth exactly what someone wants to pay. 2. There’s no way any of us could build our own 911 for $350k. 3. Compared to a McLaren/Lamborghini/Ferrari, the 911 is better built, more usable, and better value for money. 4. Ultimately, everything is relative. Right now, relative to my financial position, the 911 isn’t worth the asking price - for me. 🙂
Great video, but why don’t you just say it …..you chose to have children and not have enough money to be able to buy the car you’ve always dreamed about. It’s OK many many of men have fallen to the way of pleasing women and having children.
@@Cool12354 you’re the kind of guy who knows it all and typical of the guys who said I only got a 718 Spyder because I couldn’t afford a 911. Now I have a Spyder RS on the way, the hypothesis has changed to being about my mental state
Some viewers confused my "90% of the fun for 30% of the price" statement with my MX5, which is incorrect.
Thanks Peter. Enjoy! Please post as soon as you get the Cayman. It won’t disappoint!
It'll be a while (and it might end up being the Boxster), but I certainly will! :-)
I think I appreciated seeing your relationship with your son more than the beautiful car (which the 911 is beautiful). Greater video!
Yeah, he’s a very special boy - more valuable than all the Porsches on the planet.
1:24 1970s Lamborghini Urraco looks great in retrospect. Low wedge without the fake scoops and vents, and extra kinks and creases of 2015.
I completely agree.
I had a similar experience as a kid too!
I was one of the first people to do the Porsche drive experience with the 992 Carrera 4S. Like you, I've always lusted after a 911, but unlike you though, it only made me want one more! I'm happy to say I'm nearly there in my quest. Yes, it's a borderline ridiculous expense, but rolling a new model 911 out of my garage a couple of times a month is an indulgence I need in my life 😊
@@neilr4867 Haha! When you put it like that, it’s hard to argue! Good for you. 😄👍

Interesting. I must admit, I don’t like the pop-up spoiler on the 992. It looks broken when it’s up.

@@peterfritzphoto Boxster/Cayman are grossly underrated IMO. I'll still always want a 911, but the Boxster is a fantastic car by any measure
@@AlmightyFSM I agree. Likewise with the 911 - I’ll probably get one eventually; even just so I can stare at its gorgeous curves whenever I want. 😄

@@joshuasmith9350 I don't even understand your comment. What percentages? and are you implying a 911 and the "thrill of life" are mutually exclusive?
You say Porsche isn’t worth the $$$ . What supercar is worth the money . Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti ? No
But Porsche 911 is the one car that does it all and if not better than other super cars at a far less of a price !
@@touayaaj84 I don’t care how popular something is. Being different used to matter to me when I was young and I cared what others thought of me - but not anymore.
I have a question did the porsce beging with the vw bug. And u want you to know that the porsche is real carbon dating.

Nice video, however MX5 being 90% of the experience of a 911 is questionable.

350k Australian?
I used to hound my dad all the time to let me drive, so he began teaching me in earnest at age 8. I’m 54, now, and I still love everything about cars and driving. 👍😄
I had a 2001 E430 for years - brilliant car. Sold it to my brother-in-law, and now with more than 300,000 km on the clock, it still looks and goes great!
350k dollars ? wtf its 130k eur in europe
I know - crazy. The import duties, GST and Luxury Car Tax make them stupid expensive here. They’re probably $750k in Singapore.

AG's no offense but comparing a Mazda MX5 to a911???; can't be LOL

Wow
@@saubarmann6581 Yep - it’s all terribly unfair. We have SUVs here that cost $350-500k. It’s nuts.
Ah yes Your percentages . A smaller cheaper car . What about your practicality ? 911 has a back seat .
Your to practical !
It's not just 911 most expensive cars aren't worth the price you pay !
The 992 S costs $350,000? This does not sound right.
In Australia, it is. Watch my Boxster video, with screen shots from the Australian Porsche website for the base 992.
@@peterfritzphoto Thank you for clarifying! At that price level, I have to agree with you a 100%. In the US, we are looking at about half that price, which makes your comparison a tad more challenging.
@@j.d.4681 True indeed. We’ve always paid through the nose for cars. You guys have it sooo good! 😄
Less talking, more engine sound! Thanks!
I agree. Coming soon. 👍
I went out today and did exactly that. Just reviewing the footage now. 🙂
Porsche is def 8 times better!!
Are you referring to me or other people?
@@peterfritzphoto other people and the peanut gallery
@@pennfootball71 Indeed. And thanks for clarifying.
The new 911's are cool, but I would not own one newer than a 997...there is such a thing as too much technology.
I’m starting to feel the same way these days. There’s too much attention given to onboard entertainment, driver aids, and bloody touchscreens!
That porsche lacks the naturally aspirated boxer engine, i love Porsche, but the turbo models and also now, the "regular" line up of 911's, lacks sound.
The sweet spot in today's Porsches, relies on the gt models, and also the cayman and boxster 4.0 . Period
I agree. Watch my video comparing the Boxster to the 911. A Boxster GTS 4.0 would be perfect (for me). 🙂

Disagree in what you said I know it’s only your own opinion, simply there is no comparison between MX5’s and 911’s
Turbo S. Your video editing and quality is enjoyable to watch. I can say the Turbo S is in a complete league of its own in terms of performance and ride even if we had to compare it with all 911 models. However, 911’s are all very practical for daily use and not just a sports car like any other 2 seater sport cars. I also own a standard Cayman 718….
You're an "enthusiast", but you STILL butcher the name and call it "Porsh"? (facepalm)
It depends how lazy I’m feeling. Sometimes Porsch-a, sometimes Porsh. I think the problem is, many in Australia take the lazy approach, and it’s rubbed off on me. Even some of the motoring journos I used to work with used the butchered version.

Porsche is one of the most overpriced cars ever. It is nice, but it is not worth the price.
The Boxster and Cayman are great value, but yeah, the 911 less so.
All perspective. Generally speaking yes, 100k+ for any car is ridiculous. But compared to other cars with similar price I think it's the best value.
