  • 1963 changed the direction of the country and Birmingham, Alabama was front and center through it all. "1963- The Year That Changed Everything" chronicles many of the events that happened that year. See and hear first-hand accounts of the boycotts, the Children's March, the integration of the University of Alabama, and the tragic bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church. This film offers unique insight into the conditions so prevalent in the South at the time, and the bravery of those who were determined to change things. The film features special appearances by Carolyn McKinstry, Shelley Stewart, Sara Collins Rudolph, Barnett Wright, Joe Langston, Dr. Jesse Lewis and some of the unsung "foot-soldiers," who as children, marched and were jailed.
A film by John Jenkins. 59 Minutes. Wide Screen. HD.

As a man born in America and known only by by-words, thank you for your understanding that NO OTHER can say they could endure oppression for 400 years and still standing tall, and despite it all, wouldn't want to be any other race! However, the time has come in these latter years that the spirit has awaken the tribe of judah so that we will understand the parables, similes, and metaphors of the bible to understand who we really are and where we come from, that's why we dont break, and will always populate, because it is written, thus said the Lord!

My grandmother remember all of this, I always ask her about her childhood in the south in Alabama. When she tell me the dark side of the south, it's like listening to a horror story. She told me about the 1963 March of the children. Sadly my white teacher told me that my grandmother that is a black woman was a liar. This video proof that my grandma was telling the truth just like her friends told me about their childhood too. R.i.p to grandma that was my real history teacher on Black history.

That scene, near beginning with all those elementary students being jailed was terrible. George Wallace was really riding, the coattail, of the devil. And behind the worst catastrophe, of the church bombing, killing those 4 precious baby girls, I see why Wallace, seen as a big Saul was to David, had to be stricken, with a stroke, to clip his wings, and bring him down.
And to the precious woman who survived the blast, and was weeping because the bombers were found 15 years later, but died before spending much time in jail, don't fret about that, because when they died, they went from jail, to hell, so it ain't over for them. ✌🏽❤🙏🏻

      I couldn't agree more.
I am from the UK and although I knew about the National Guard being called in to allow black students to register, but this shook me to the core.
It wasn't even 60 years ago. No wonder race is still such a massive deal in the US. Now, with the current Trump administration, progress has been stopped. I do think that when Trump and his disgusting cronies are removed, the American people will come together in a way that hasn't happened before.

To all the other races of people of color, only the Native Americans can come close to what we have endured here in America. You may talk about us but none of you have had to live or face the life of the sons and daughters of those brought here in chains. Your forefathers came here free and never had the stigma of slavery placed on you. Even the Chinese were not treated as bad. Crimes committed against us still go unpunished. Young black people, this is what the price was for freedoms and rights and like the man said, don't waste your inheritance killing each other.

I am a 75 year-old white American. I do not say "I am White". I have white skin, but I am an American first of all. I grew up in a small town in Wyoming and until I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1963, I rarely saw, much less knew any Black people. When I was discharged, I worked as a "swamper" a helper on a furniture moving truck (American Van Lines). We ran 46 states. I will never forget the first time we ran a few loads of furniture into Mississippi. This was in 1965 I believe. One evening, we stopped at a truck stop just outside of Senatobia, Mississippi to get something to eat.
Now, I had seen the "Whites Only" and "Colored Only" signs on TV news (we had only one channel where I was raised). I watched this with disbelief. There were no signs like this anywhere in Wyoming that I know of. But when we entered the cafe/restaurant in the truck stop, there were two entrances into the restaurant that was divided down the middle by a partition. I was shocked to my roots to see--for real--the "Whites Only" and "Colored Only" signs. For some reason to see this and to realize this crap actually existed, I became very angered. I made the comment to my partner (the driver of our truck), "You know, I think I'm gonna go and eat on the colored side." It was then I heard a voice behind me. When I turned and looked, the speaker was a huge, overweight, unshaven man who stared at me coldly and said, "Son, if yawl go in thar, th' POlice'll be pullin' yer body outa some culvert out in the country."
His comment filled me with shock and anger, but I figured I'd best heed his advice.
To this day I absolutely despise ANY form of discrimination or bigotry or whatever you wish to call it.
I would say one of the biggest problems in the sixties was pure ignorance of the truth. Obviously, there was no Internet, Facebook, Instagram etc. So the pubic believed whatever they were told by the media.
To this day, I STILL don't trust ANY of the media.

Once you’re delving into areas like that you’re talking about the unknowable behind someone’s eyes, really it’s a victory you can’t measure. At this point it’s hard to tell who loves each other purely on a soul level and who hates each other because their personalities clash, because we are pretty thoroughly mixed. What we can do now is hold deep self accountability and urge yourself to forgive what you cannot shape into something more charming, lovely and full of class.

Thank you very much for this film. I hope this gets more views, especially after the special election in Alabama which took place on 12.12.17 nearly electing a child molesting, misogynistic, racist unconstitutional man to the Senate.
It is frightening what a close call that was, with the massive turnout by the black community of Alabama making the difference.

It boggles my mind how someone can have so much hate in their hearts against someone just because they look different. Every time I hear about the Birmingham church bombing and the 4 little girls, I tear up. Seeing some of the rules Alabama had in place is just crazy...Separate dining and separate parks for baseball. Fascinating, kaleidoscopic view of a very significant part of American History. I have read Gay Telese's account of the Birmingham Riots, accounts of the Freedom Riders and this adds another interesting facet, by virtue of surviving eyewitness accounts, of the struggles to attain freedom of oppression and segregation. So many committed Americans added their important part to ultimately achieve that aim, and in the end one of the commentators stresses the point, that young Americans need to appreciate, how far they have come and how many opportunities they have today on account of the sacrifices, these committed Freedom Fighters made.

There is a lot more voices speaking up now with out fear of what will happen. Back then You didn't see as many mixed racial people if at all, obviously not as many kids playing together of different races so it was easy to convince and brain wash your kids to think "this is the way, we need to be separate for your own good!" and then that seed was planted and the hate begins. It's not so easy anymore to brain wash. It's easier to have a mind of our own and judge for ourselves. Eventually the generations that were brainwashed and grew up with the mind frame of black is less then or anything that isn't white is less then...is a generation that will soon be gone or at least have less power to brainwash. I have faith it will get better, It's sadly long over do but I have hope!

I grew up in southern Ontario Canada. I remember the news broadcasts about the bombings. I’m glad I watched this video. I forgot how bad a time it was. As a 12-13 year old in ‘63, I had no idea that people were living that kind of horror. The news disturbed me, my comfortable white world. It was the beginning of many such experiences to come that impressed me, perhaps unconsciously at first, but eventually allowed me to see the world through different eyes. I can also thank those brave people for beginning my journey to freedom too.

I was the only white boy on Day Street around 1994. and I had a spirited black girlfriend with 2 young kids. I remember her cooking collared greens, ham.and her using snuff. she'd send me out back to the willow tree, to get a switch.and her kids would suddenly behave as they should. she was amazing. I also remember sharing wild Irish Rose wine, and seeing A really big burned out, collapsed church and thinking what A waist it was. now I know what y'all have gone through from the start of this country, and we're all slave's now. I've always been poor or close to it. debt can be a chain too.the new world order, who's goal it is to for fill the Georgia guide Stone's promise of a reduction in world population to half a million people. that means killing 6,500,000,000 folks.

Now I know they were looking for freedom riders. There I was 10 years old in St Louis Mo, playing darts in my aunts front yard with my cousin. A car pulls up with to white cats and parks. My cousin says " don't run or they will shoot us in the back. They sat there seems like forever, we dared not move one inch. They stared at us with a seething hatered that no adult should have towards a child. And so it went on and on. Now it is 2020 and #GeorgeFloyd being murdered is burned into my mind forever. Thank you, sir. I want to thank you for having the courage and the heart to post this video for all of Americans and the world to wake up to understand we must work harder for peace and a life where everyone is truly equal. I do not believe the United States is the greatest country in the world. But, I do believe with hard work and determination we can get there and become an example. If we do not learn more about our past, and make an effort to compensate African Americans for their harms, there will always live animosity and hate. Germany and South Africa were at one time the world's best examples of hate and genocide, but today both countries have become a better example of atonement for their wrongs than the U.S. which is enough proof that we are not the greatest country in the world. We must do the right thing. Demand U.S. Congress to pass H.R. 40 and open up efforts to study the cause and effect of more than 440 years of racial injustice targeting primarily African Americans.

I was also born in ‘63 but IMO, the year things truly began to change the most was ‘64. I realize the biggest event of the decade, the assassination, happened in ‘63 but it occurred at the end of the year (Nov) and our nation was still in shock for a month or so after it happened, so reactions & opinions didn’t really begin to unfold until after the first of the year ‘64.
British Invasion (music, longhair) World’s Fair, Mustang/Muscle cars, Civ Rights Act, Gulf of Tonkin (Vietnam) are just some of the main events that occurred this year that really created the concept of the ‘60’s and the birth of the counter culture that critically changed American attitudes & culture, still very much affecting US to this day.

I was born in 1963 and tension was so stressed for us for years after my birth. I remember seeing whoever was the grand dragon of the KKK on tv when I was little.he stated we should just go back to africa.there were many of our church elders and mothers gathered in our living room,we were one of the few families with a tv.I asked, after he made that statement,'well, why don't we?".of course my question was met with blank faced staring by all adults in the room and no one gave an answer.I have always believed we were better off separate from whites, like shops, grocers, laundry mats, restaurants, gas stations etc.the neighborhood I lived in was clean and prosperous when it had its on economy.as we were 'given',lol, the 'rights',lol again, to spend our dollars in the establishments of whites,my neighborhood dwindled away. I've told this to my own children which led to thousands of questions.as adults they tend to agree with my belief we were better off with our own little economy in our clean and tidy communities in the 60s.

      😁 sweet story.
Thanks for sharing. The only separation should be the believers from the non-believers.
Rev. King spent 5 weeks in India in '59 with Coretta, where he was honored, respected, welcomed, and invited to speak everywhere.
We had a TV, but a tyrannical mother who insisted on censoring it. It was only the channels she allowed and at the times she specified. Dinner was only dinner if NBC news was blaring at us, and in 1963.... well it was horrific every night practically. We weren't allowed any kid shows. Mom watched the worst crime shows and awful BBC documentaries that always slanted towards dark, dreary subjects, and the media was quite off mostly in reporting.
I'm quite grateful now to catch up. I see the sadness in these good people's eyes, and yet there's no lack of faith or perseverance to be Godly.

You don't think the decline of black neighborhoods which led to ghettos is a serious matter?? And what did MLK in India have to do with my comment? Black people having productive neighborhoods has nothing to do with separation. Where did that self-righteous blather come from? Your comment is confusion.

@12sisters1bride7: You make a very good point; one that I am sorry for. Watching “4 little girls” is historically important not only because of the movement and a bombing of the church, but because it depicts the black nuclear families from which those little girls came. That is important for white folks and everyone to see, because an intact black family is becoming a rarity, I find. I have noticed that when white people are getting acquainted they ask, where do you live? But black people ask, where do you stay? As if their living situation was temporary. That vaguely disturbs me and perhaps speaks to your concern. I wonder if you have ever watched anything on the Tulsa massacre. It has to do, not only with whites killing blacks, but with destroying a prosperous economy. Life is sad when no one turns a light on and sees themselves. ❤

please learn and understand history as it really was .... so we don’t repeat the sins of our fathers - of which many were deceived and taught falsehoods and wrote history based on how they wanted it to taught to our kids to keep us segregated and against each other so they can control us for their gains!
this is definitely a real depiction of truth and heinous and criminal acts perpetrated on innocent peoples of our nation , constructed by elite devils ! the same ones who are now , 57 yrs later , perpetrating the same crimes against humanity, in the name of freedom and democracy ! these people are not democrats they are devils who have been born and breed and indoctrinated into a cult of nothing more then one who’s mission is ONLY to divide and conquer and kill the american dream ! nothing more !😩they hate america and all citizens who reside here !
please demand an audit to ensure voter integrity and keep
america beautiful and try in court those who have committed treason and genocide on our peoples!
our constitution provides for it and we surely must demand its penalties for justice to prevent this kind of fraud and evil to infiltrate our lands again! with gods help and our love for one another this is easily won!
