Unlike lots of good things in life, "there are no side effects to breathing." While food supplies energy, "we get most of our energy through breathing." Healthy breathing and sleeping habits, plus movement and whole foods, are foundational to health I find.

This describes perfectly how I think I was breathing at work. I felt like the adrenaline was pumping all the time and I was having panic attacks. I was signalling to my body that I was in danger and was constantly in fight or flight mode. Since I’ve controlled my breath I literally feel like a different person. I can’t believe something so simple can be so life changing.

I experimented almost everything for my epilepsy, histamine intolerance, panic attacks, irritability etc... The real game changer was just closing my mouth 24h/day and breathing through the nose. We were designed to breath with the nose, not with the mouth.

According to my youtube breathing journey , 4:4:4:4 is good, coherent breathing is good, rhythmic breathing is good, 4-7-8 is good , 2-3 is good, and much more, with so many techniques that are recommended its more and more confusing . The pardadox is the more you think about it the more your gonna induce anxiety as in : - I have to breath slowly , calm down etc.. Sure breathing is important but If you have low dopamine receptors active overall it wont do anything. You must balnce, food , exercise, sleeping, breathing. Its a total equation not just 1 simple miracle solution.

I've been having blood pressure issues and even though I've had doctors looking at all kinds of different things that could be causing it, I'm really starting to think it's mainly related to my breathing. I've been focusing on taking controlled 4 second in 8 second out breaths and it's caused me to notice that I normally take short choppy breaths...and that's assuming I'm even breathing at all. Sometimes I catch myself holding my breath unconsciously. Focusing on breathing multiple times per day is helping get the BP lowered. When I brought this up to my doctor he was somewhat dismissive of the idea, but I find it hard to dismiss when I can reliably lower my BP by just relaxing and focusing on taking long, full breaths.

Your doctor is wrong. There is even an FDA approved device (I think it’s called Respirate) that lowers BP specifically by helping people learn to breathe. I applied the concept of controlled breathing and it lowered my BP significantly.

    Keep it simple
You just put a bunch would be meditation, yoga, TAICHI instructors out business. Good for you.
    Here is another rhythm
Visualize the surf coming in as you breath in pause and breath out as surf returns to the ocean

This is crazy. I’m walking right now and then focused on that type of breathing. I’m typically 110 to almost 120. I walk fast I am fit, but my heart rate runs high. I’m actually at 98.!!

One note on athletes. I started watching mountain bike races. Downhill, avalance race. two different guys in two different races.
Nearly identical respiration rate. Similar in and out rates and cadence. During just about the whole race Identical pattern and sound.
Coincidence or not. I think not. They were both just about in front or won the race. Intune and very developed rhythm.

Kundalini yoga heavy on breathwork and its absolutely phenomenal in its effects on depression, anxiety, sleep, and just overall well-being.
The U.S. military tends to use only techniques that actually work and even they are teaching breathwork to soldiers along with meditation. Go figure.

Kundalini is opening yourself up to the demonic.Very dangerous according to the yogi instructors once it curls up around the spinal cord.Jesus Christ will set you free from this trap if you truly want to escape hell on earth and eternal punishment as well!(just stop and think by francis chan here on youtube is a great message to explore!).....Bless you from here in Texas,B

I used to tell my clients that one can go quite some time without food, drink, exercise, and even sleep, but see just how long you can go holding your breath...

Let us go back thousands of years to get a simple morning routine. If you don't know how to do these, there are hundreds of YT videos on each one or consult a knowledgeable Hatha yoga teacher (btw, the spellings of these techniques may be off for these practices, but put them in a search bar on YT or other search engine - they will come up:
-- Breath of Fire or Kapelbhati
    -- Bastrika
    -- Sat Nam technique
-- Alternate nostril breathing (there are several versions of this such as Nadi Suddi)
-- Humming pranayama (the Indian term for this escapes me now)
-- Kriya 1 pranayama from SRF
These are just some of the majors, but there are many versions - Note: the ones that work are the one that you do everyday!!

All the videos on controlled breathing across the world source their content from the ancient Indian practice of 'Pranayama'.

I am super interested in this subject, because I was stressed my whole childhood, and life. I began to have issues with hyperventilation, in my teens. A guy stopped me on my walk to my girlfriend's house. At that age we were boy crazy, but when this guy asked for my phone number, I was so nervous, I guess. I tried to be kind, explaining that I didn't give my number to strangers, but he wouldn't back off. I guess, I hyperventilated, and I passed out. He took me/ home in a cab, but I still didn't give him my phone number. My sister had similar issues, and I am wondering if it could be genetic, or just because we were raised in the same environment. I have been trying the exercises you recommend, but one thing that is important is that I have developed apnea, but I read in my research on the subject, that quote...People who have had open abdominal surgery will most likely have respiratory issues. My issues began RIGHT after my open abdominal gall bladder surgery, and I have been questioning doctors for years with no success. I learned that statement in a medical journal in my years of research. When I lie down, I actually feel, and sense that IF I go to sleep, my brain will not give the inhale command to my lungs. I can actually feel the slackness of sensation, that creates the signal to inhale. I thought it was a damaged diaphragm, but my doctor said, if I had that, I would have presented more symptoms, that would be much wose. I awaken, at times hyperventilating, with a rapid pulse. I put my nightshirt over my face, and take in carbon dioxide, and bear down to slow the heart rate, and it stops. For years, I thought I was dying because I couldn't breathe upon awakening. How I reached 76 years old I will never know. Thank you for such USEFULL, and VALUABLE information.

I have tried this technique for a couple weeks- in 4, hold 4, exhale 6, hold 2- And definitely useful. Best advice yet. But to me still a bit uncomfortable. I have always found breathing exercises difficult and I get the feeling breathing exercises are of limited benefit to me. But my personality is such that I don't have problems with stress or touching spirituality. However this breathing technique works well, and I say this with seriousness, when I am sitting on a toilet doing number 2.
