I agree!! It was so different and refreshing (a breath of fresh air if I dare say!) than watching a know-nothing journalist with an agenda interviewing an expert in a field.
As asthmatic i did a course with Patrick Mc Mekeown in Dublin a few years back the Buteyko method it was breathing through the nose it was the best thing I done my asthma not as bad i still do my nose breathing thanks
I am just an old lady that started just 2 years ago, after listening to Mr McKeown, to consciously breathing through my nose for sleeping. I had a scary experience in an airplane being forced to wear a mask and I was in a panic so I decided to learn to breath. Covid was everywhere and masks were necessary. Today, I tape my mouth every night, everyone laughs, and my apnea is gone, I dont snore and I sleep much more deeply. Just 2 years. I wish I had known in my previous 70 years. Thank you Mr Keown for showing me how to breathe and use my nose. BTW any time I talk about it no one says much, they hem and haw, and thats it. DONT PEOPLE CARE?????IT IS BASIC!!!!!
So great to hear your experience! I'm 54 with chronic health issues, been healing my vagus nerve and I think these breathing ideas (and maybe mouth tape at night) will be a game changer 🤞❤️
Just be careful wihh Wim Hof if you have any underlying breathing problems. My asthma has come back with a vengeance after practicing Wim Hof's breathing technique
Glad to hear this. It's so important for physicians to recognize breathing as (in Nestor's words) "the missing pillar of health." Yet you don't seem to hear many doctors talking about this. I heard no public messaging during the pandemic, for example, urging people to breath through their noses.
I am also a physician. My cardiologist told me to read both books and I agree with you 100%. I have recommended these to over 15 patients in the last 2 weeks.
But what about the "poor" multi billion dollar pharmaceutical industry? $orry bad joke. One patient cured is a customer lost. Go team humanity! Let us heal the world 🌅🗿😋🪂💟🛐🌍
It's a beautiful thing that Mr. Nestor and Mr. McKeown view each other not as rivals but as fellow messengers on the power of breathing. I found Mr. Nestor's work from his appearance on Joe Rogan, and I found Mr. McKeown's work indirectly from Breath. I highly recommend reading or listening to both books there is a little bit of overlap but they both have loads of good information in them.
Interesting. I don’t see them thinking of each other as rivals. I see them more as colleagues/collaborators. This was a great, informative conversation.
I've been studying this topic for years, and have been trying to reconcile the opinions of experts who say breathe lightly while others advocate deep breathing. It was such a relief to hear James Nestor confirm my belief that there is not one single method that works for everyone. Thank you!
We completely agree @SustainableSantaCruz That's why there are so many different breathing exercises in the OA program. Exercises need to be tailored to individual needs. I’m doing this breathing whilst listening to this podcast, it’s very relaxing, I have just bought Patrick’s book, my blood pressure has already come down and my heart palpitations have decreased significantly in just a couple of weeks, I’m so excited for my new lease of life, thanks so much for this from a 62 year old woman🙏🙏
Thanks so much for commenting and for your support @sharonhill349, Your journey to better health is the kind of thing people need to hear to inspire them to make similar beneficial changes. Well done!
Started to read James Nestor book which led me to Patrick Mc Keown. I've started taping my mouth at night and after 3 night I'm sleeping through the night. Can't believe the difference. Now I've to encourage my kids to start. Recovery after exercise has greatly improved.
Fantastic to hear @raykenna8858. Keep it up and you will continue to see improvement, especially if you combine with functional breathing exercises. We advise using our own MyoTape (www.myotape.com) as it is specifically developed for this purpose and allows the wearer to speak or cough if required. Kids sizes are also available.
Great to see you here! Love your videos. I think a vid on Buteyko explaining that it's not about the timing of the breath but on it's speed/depth would be really great for people on your channel. Slow, quiet, soft, gentle are great cues.
My wishes to the success of now offering a better approach to outdated ENT invasive surgery. The fact that those who are mouth breathers after having surgery by opening up adenoids and tonsils had 63% failure unless these kids are taught nose breathing shows it’s best as the front line of treatment to start with nose breathing training to get to the cause is a breakthrough in both of your work. I’m the author of a new book “Immune Rejuvenation” and these techniques are part now of the 5 steps to health and longevity because sleep is one of the 5 supported by healthy proper breathing! I have in my late 60’s continued as a strength endurance weight lifting athlete and in the last 20 years I was taught to use nose breathing which improved why performance beyond imagination enough to break two world records. @@hydie1234 yes great and learn to mirror and match breathing of a partner and notice when you sit in a similar position who the flow of thoughts from one mind to another improve ! Mind reading ? Maybe
I’m 68 I live in Colorado and I love to hike but now that I’m breathing through my nose I can hike twice as far breathing through my nose rather than my mouth thank you.
What breathing exercises in particular do you use? I’m learning a lot about deep breathing and want to narrow down to my needs to help with anxiety. Thanks 🙏
@@patmanpatmanson But wim hof doesn't advocate nose breathing, he doesn't care what you breathe through. I got a much worse case of mouth breathing and overbreathing by consistently doing wim hof.
Thank you for mentioning and honoring Carl Stough’s life work! I am a MDH Breathing Coordination practitioner (trained by Stough’s longtime personal assistant Lynn Martin and Robin DeHaas). Stough’s method of re-educating all the structures involved in optimal breathing is truly wonderful and very much alive! It has not been lost...thanks to Martin and DeHaas!! That said, people find the idea of “learning to breathe” counterintuitive..., that is until they experience how amazing a re-coordinated breath feels.
The most impressive thing about this Interview and the two breathing experts is how they step out of a certain method and see the big picture about breathing (at least at that time with the current knowledge, we must see this as a process and not a final answer). And I think they both are practicing what they preach. Just see the openess and calmness they interact with each other.... very beatiful :-)
Patrick, you can never know where your influence begins or ends sir! Never stop sharing the science and physiology of breathing. You have had a profound and positive impact on thousands if not millions of people's lives by simply changing and correcting their breathing including myself. Heart felt thanks to you sir!!!
I have been a chronic mouth breather all my life, my adenoids were taken out at seven years old, I have a narrow palate. I have had ear infections since I can’t tell you how long. I’m 60 years old. I’ve listen to both of your books and I can’t tell you how effective it’s been in the last two weeks since I’ve read them. kudos to both of you💕💕💕
This is wonderful, life-changing/enhancing/prolonging! A friend introduced me to mouth-taping, 1st night was EPIC sleep, I awoke a new woman, younger, more productive, happier, nicer! I had tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy at 5, and surgery for deviated septum maybe 13. I was a serious mouth-breather…. And I’m so glad to be resurrected into the ‘oxygen advantage’!
Thank you for for Patrick for asking about different types of breathing and thank you James for clarifying that they all have a place and function and ALL OF THEM WORK!
I have both both of these guys books and love it. I have klung disease and had stage 3 lung cancer requiring a lobectomy. The only thing that I want to use going forward is breathing to help get and retain full use of my lung function. I hang in every word I heard from both James and Patrick, since practing their techniques I have found I can exercise more and feel amazingly calm and happy. Thank you both for your time and persistence in this field.
My dad had the same, left lung removed at age 53, his doctor told him to start walking, start with ten mins every day and build up the lung function in right lubg, it changed his life, he got a dog, gradually took up country walking as a hobby, walking holidays, he's 89 years old now, just lost his second dog unfortunately, but golfing 3 times a week, still walking every day with my brother and his dog. During his rehab he was taught how to clear his lung of any mucus through breathing techniques and how to breathe when exercising, nasal breathing and huffing. His lifelong anxiety issues are better managed. I believe getting outside in nature and sunlight, exercise and bteathing techniques made him a healthier and happier man. Good luck with your journey, i hope this inspires you on your way 🙏❤
I’m in the anti-aging field. I only ascribe to all natural and healthy lifestyle and teach women and men how to stay Ageless as they celebrate each birthday. I was introduced to yoga over 20 years ago, I’ve been meditating daily for over 25 years. I was a pretty good breather with all the disciplines I was taught. I recently found and incorporated the Wim Hof technique into my my daily regiment and I can honestly say that nothing I have ever done has supported me the way the Wim Hof breathing has. I feel like I’ve created a whole new life style in one simple exercise. I can’t describe how wonderful I feel from 10-20 minutes of conscious breathing exercise a day. My meditation has reached new levels of awareness and the state of relaxation I experience all day long is so noticeable I can’t begin to describe it. And the biggest ah ha is my skin! This breath technique is causing my skin to glow, making me appear more youthful than my 66 years. Now everything Breath is on my radar. I’m starting to encourage my clients and students to explore a breath technique that suits them. I truly believe that proper breathing will keep us young and healthy. Here’s to our good health.
Everything you wrote about Wim Hof breathing is exactly how I feel. I began doing Wim Hof breathing (RUclips video) everyday since Memorial Day weekend this year, and I have not looked back! It has become a nonnegotiable part of my day, it has truly been life changing. It has helped tremendously with anxiety and my general outlook on life and how I feel about myself. So simple, yet so profound.
Last winter I was doing a dedicated practice of Wim Hof breathing and cold exposure. Fully committed. But I didn’t like the breathing. The results of the breathing were interesting. Was holding my breath for almost 4 minutes after the exhale. Could do about 35 pushups after the exhale without breathing. But I didn’t like the process of the doing the vigorous breathing. It was unpleasant and I couldn’t get used to it no matter how many weeks I practiced. So I switched to using the techniques of The Oxygen Advantage. This approach came more naturally to me. It was scientifically explained. It made sense to me. So I wrote off the Wim Hof style of breathing, although I kept the cold exposure practice. Now, after watching this, I’ll have to reevaluate. I like what James Nestor was saying about how the different means of breathing will yield different results and apply in different scenarios. It’s not all one method forever more. The stimulation of both the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems is important. Will definitely be getting this new book. Great conversation. So interesting.
You should take the breathing part(Guided Wim Hof Method Breathing) as a refference/guideline If you do less, or slower etc...ets fine, as long as you keep dong et indefinitely Still breath in via nose exale nose(wim does through mouth, maybe exale is not as important but still i say nose) Second part is the power of the brain , when exaling FEEL relaxation coming from your head to your soul/sol/soular plexus effective Wim hof interview with russle brand at around 18th minute. He basicly tells us that breathing is the main thing(along with the power of the mind )
Also, as J. Nestor says in this interview, it is better to get your breathing up above-average using the slow Oxygen Advantage techniques taking deeper slower diaphragmatic breathes, and then once your lung capacity and breathing have normalized at a higher capacity, then get into the Wim Hof. Wim's technique is great, but it is a shock to the system to breathe like that-which can be good, but not the best for everyone. If you were able to hold your breath for 4 minutes, then you should be able to go back to this, after your Oxygen Advantage training and be more relaxed and probably exceed that. Like Darko P say, it's about feeling the body and relaxing, and feeling that relaxation. Wim's technique, if you are not doing the mind-body connection, is not nearly as productive because you end up stimulating all of these chemicals in your body but not relaxing and releasing them properly. It is this controlled release that gives you the most positive gains in terms of the bigger work involving the sympathetic nervous system and immune system, from my understanding. I do both of these menthods. Wim Hof first thing in the morning, as a reset to get me on track, and Oxygen Advantage for regular day to day life. I've ordered Nestor's book into my public library through an inter-library loan. It should be here soon. Looking forward to it. Once I finish that I want to order in his book about Free Diving. I watched several interviews with him now as well as reading articles; one of my favorites was the youtube podcast of Joe Rogan. I use a youtube 11:01 minute wim hof breathing video, easy to search. I find that his instruction and the pace was pretty spot on for me to begin this. Good Luck.
@@Leeofthestorm Thanks for your thorough comment. When I get back to the WHM I plan to do the same as you: WHM first thing and then OA the rest of the day. Winter’s settled itself in here in Calgary so I’ve already gone on a few shorts and t-shirt walks in the -10 degree weather. I’ll check out the paced breathing video you recommended. Cheers.
@@stoicstrength Right on. I think this is the way to go. I haven't seen anything better yet, anyway, unless you want to go deep into tantric stuff in a monastery.

Been putting nasal breathing into practice over the past seven days and my resting heart rate is already trending in a positive direction. I’m sleeping better and my outlook in life much improved. In the process adopting this breathing method into my exercise routine.
I dont know how anyones eyes could 'glass over' talking to you about breathing Patrick!! You're the best xx I am a MSK physiotherapist and yoga teacher and have found your work to be soooo informative and insightful
Absolute magic finding this. I read "The Oxygen Advantage" 3 years ago, and have been trying my best with no coaching to implement Patrick's techniques (and of course Dr. Buteyko's). I recently devoured Nestor's book, and my first thought as I started reading it was "I wonder if he knows about, or will talk about Patrick?" :) Glad to find you both in this life, thank you for your contributions to accessible, no strings attached health.
Starting with WIM HOF and now your techniques have helped me greatly. I have a heart arrhythmia - didn't think I could do anything about it and started breathing and after 4 months my heart rate is back to normal around 60 BPM, where with the heart arrhythmia prior to doing your techniques was 120-130 BPM resting - causing all sorts of issues (anxiety, high BP, physical injuries. etc.). I'm a former competitive runner and feel this technique back in the early 80s would have saved my running career and prevented the heart arrhythmia. Many thanks.
I wear a watch that tracks sleep. Before I mouth taped I was getting roughly 2 hours of deep sleep according to the watch a night. I started mouth taping ose breathing and that changed to 4-5 hours deep sleep a night. I feel better when I wake up. This is just my experience but for me it has helped.
Watch Shaun Stevensons interviews on TomBileu and Mathew Walkers talks and interviews and start establishing a regular night and morning routine especially stress management habits. Sleep is non negotiable It’s the pillar supporting diet exercise and stress handling Sweet dreams
Greetings I have only recently discovered you both. I have read James book and constantly listen to Patrick . All I can say this breathing has changed my life I wish I knew about this many years back. Thanks to you both . Ian Australia
Thanks a lot Patrick for all your effort presenting the knowledge about breathing to the world. I had allergies for 20 years and had asthma for a couple of years and this for about 6 months per year. I tried sooo many different approachs and nothings worked. About 3 years ago I watched some of your videos and a couple of others about breathing and they inspired me to try it out. After one months of changing my breathing I lost my allergies completly, also the asthma. What followed was very weird, coz my family and friends saw the changes in me and I told them that breathing is the key, but nobody believed it. Everyone had other explainations, some who are doctors and literary nobody trusted in breathing, but I never stopped defending it and doing research on my own (reading more books :D). Now a week ago I read the book by James and found data about allergies and asthma etc. and it was such a relief to read a book like this by a science journalist. I m giving the book now to all people around me and it already has impact on them :) .. thanks a lot for your great work, to both of you!
No one has mentioned anything about having nightmares when your tongue sticks to the roof of your mouth, and you're choking during sleep. It's also caused by mouthbreathing. This was my problem. I discovered mouth taping through James' book, and haven't had any nightmares since. Thanks guys, great podcast!
@@irishlad2326 When breathing through my mouth, my tongue and the roof of my mouth get very dry and sticky - and i start to snore. At some point my tongue just sticks to the roof of my mouth and i cannot breath anymore, and this comes terribles dreams to shock myself awake. Usually i'm sweating like a pig, from working so hard to get any air. With the tape trick, i no longer get a dry mouth and tongue, so that fixed my issue.
Amazing book James. Patrick keep the great work! Use breath as a tool not as a rule. I’m on my 132 day of using the various the breathing techniques and it’s the best!!
I just tried the mouth tape for the first time. Thought I wouldn’t be able to get through five minutes, let alone through the night. I slept just fine. My breathing is so much calmer. I can’t believe I didn’t know about this sooner. So glad I discovered you guys. Thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you for this amazing chat. I found Oxygen Advantage this winter, loved it and started adding the techniques to my traditional pranayama yoga practice and teaching. I just purchased Nestor's book after this interview and plan to have a book club with it and my yoga students in July.
Great talk! Both very knowledgeable gentlemen. I've read James' book and really loved it, very entertaining and informative. I Will definitely look into Patrick's work too
Thank you very much for this interview, I am a Buteyko educator and firmly believe in nose breathing and in retraining with the Buteyko method to reestablish a 'default' breathing pattern that does improve health. Learning about other ways to choose to breathe for specific periods of time and the profound benefits possible, is very exciting.
The Book Breath has change my life and continues to motivate me to teach others. I am so glad I have stumble upon Patrick as well. I love all of his videos so far. Very smart men.
My dentist had me get a palate adjustor for my daughter even tho she still had baby teeth. The more I learn about it, I’m so glad I did esp now that I’m learning about the power of correct breathing. Thank you for your books and all your hard work in getting the message out there.
I am 74 and have asthma and have a couple of stents. I was looking up OCD because my sons new partner has it and breathing came up. I have been tapping my mouth at night for 7days and I think my nose has opened up and I feel more rested when I get up. All good so far.
So far there is no profit to be made by air, let alone healthy humans. That’s why this topic is ignored, sadly. This is life changing information that I will be sure to pass on. Thank you both so much.
If you are waking with a dry mouth then you are not nasal breathing. Tape your mouth at night with 3m paper tape to ensure nasal breathing and the dry mouth will be gone and sinus will be nice and moist. This simple habit can have profound effect on quality of life
If it would not have been for James' book - I would not have finally realized how profoundly important nose breathing is. Sure I have heard anecdotes that breathing was important - But never has it come across or explained in a way that without a doubt has driven home it is something I should look further into and begin practicing "right now". For the last month and a half, I have been ingesting as much information as possible and to date have seen benefits from it. Looking back - I've wasted so many years with very low energy levels, trying countless things in an attempt to improve and enhance my athletic efforts. (doing physical stuff is goal one for me to enjoy a full life)
Excellent video thank you guys both, wonderful work bringing this info back out. It is crazy breathing has fallen by the wayside so much. Society just wants things to be more high tech, when simplicity and the FUNDAMENTALS are the most important. ❤️
I went to doctors for years about my throat clearing and they never could find a reason. It’s astonishing that they never mentioned am I breathing through my mouth or my nose.
This was so great! I found Patrick at the beginning of the pandemic and have tried to send his message to anyone who will listen, including my husband and 4 young adult children. Definitely James' book is helping to spread this information. Several friends were already reading 📖 it when I discovered it.
Thanks for this as I love listening to these talks and I can vouch that even if you’re not in great health just learning to breath better and practicing is powerful I discovered Patrick a year ago and was not in good health suffice to say just doing occasional practicing and taping when I remember at nigh has brought great benefits and more energy to my life.... why this isn’t in hospitals is baffling... bless you both ❤️

Essso! Thank you for sharing this nteresting conversation gentlemen. Looking forward to seeing you soon in Cabo, Sunny blessings; one conscious breath at a time.
Thank you for this content. I first read Oxygen Advantage in 2017, then Breath about 3 months ago. I was hoping that you two would come together, this should be seen by everyone. I will be sharing it whenever I come across the many people who think it's all bollocks.
Thanks so much for this. I've been needing a kick up the ass to get going with making some small videos on breathing on youtube and setting up some breathing workshops locally for a long time and this has made me realise we need to spread the word and educate people! I've been teaching freediving and breathing all over the world for 20 years but only been looking into nose breathing since i read OA 2 years ago. I'll let you know...All the best.
Patrick and James, *thanks to both of you for the work you're doing here.* I've had "Breath" on preorder for months, psyched that it's arriving today. The "why" regarding many of us mouth breath has many contributing factors. Buteko was instrumental in getting me to understand better breathing, but it was equally important that I avoid dairy to maintain it. Ultimately my real problem was a tongue tie contributed to an underdeveloped jaw, cramped teeth, braces which made everything worse; all resulting in severe sleep apnea which is helped somewhat by a CPAP, but that creates its own problems and I still don't sleep well. I have an airway which has a sever constriction in the upper throat, it's 15-20% of what it should be, and my only real resolution is surgical. I'm planning to have an MMA surgery later this year to address this; if I could do it today I would, but it requires 6 months of orthodontics to prepare for the surgical procedure.
Excellent video , I’m getting the book... I live in Ireland like you Patrick and my daughter just had a baby and is breast feeding, my other 2daughters breast feed their children for over two years so proud of them and it’s soo beneficial for their breathing and teeth formation and I think it’s very sad , we’re one of the lowest countries in the world for breast feeding if not the lowest...
Can I just report that I contracted covid in the first onslaught in early April 2020. I wasn't hospitalised, I wasn't severely breathless though somewhat, and had all the other issues, gastro, shattered fatigue, lungs full of phlegm etc. I already knew a little about breathwork, and I did some work every day on my own. What happened to me was that covid severely disrupted my autonomic nervous system, so my heart rate and blood pressure were completely out of wack. I had horrible orthostatic and postural tachycardia, so that even bending to the fridge brought on a heart rate of 200. I would also wake with panic attacks because of the adrenaline flooding through my body randomly. What has helped manage ALL of this is breathing. Slow, even, paced breathing, with a longer exhale. I do a daily practice for 20 minutes, but I make sure always to nose breathe, I make sure to breathe slowly and calmly. It's by no means easy all of the time. But it works. I had betablockers to control the erratic heartrate, but honestly breathing does a better job. I've posted this in the hope that if there's anyone else out there with long covid - I struggled on for nearly two years, slowly improving - with the autonomic dysfunction, I just want to say BREATH, BREATH and BREATH.
Keep up with the content and spreading the information. I came upon you after getting braces, so I will continue with the orthodontics but have tried to implement tongue posture, mouth taping and nasal breathing
I loved this video Patrick, thank you very much for sharing it with us. I watched a few of your videos on nose breathing a while back and I incorporated those breathing techniques (only nose breathing) and I have noticed such a difference in my health and overall well-being since doing so. Just recently though I have been trying to breath just through my nose and I have noticed a narrowing of my nasal passages to the point that when I breath I make noise while breathing. It is kind of like a soft whistling sound. This narrowing has also made it more difficult to only nose breath. I find that I have the sensation of the starvation for air like you say and I find myself switching back to the bad mouth breathing. Not sure how to open up my nasal passageways to where the noise stops. I hear the noise but not sure if it is audible to others.
Hi Pete, not sure if you're still having this problem but I'd advise doing some of the exercises in the oxygen advantage book! They're also on RUclips, the main one is the breathing light exercise which you can find on YT. All the best
I don't know if this will reach you, but spend some of your effort on reducing inflammation via your diet. Eliminate sugars, especially fructose, and seed oils. Alcohol is a huge trigger. I used to have tons of nasal congestion that caused me to lose sleep. Then I was extremely fatigued, gained weight and was moody and miserable. I also had psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. I eliminated all lectins, simple carbs, seed oils. Everything gradually went away. I've lost 75 lbs., no auto immune disease, tons of energy, completely clear airways night and day, great sleep, happy and my mind is better than ever. You might want to check out Dr. Perlmutter, Dr. Gundry and Dr. Bikman for more scientific explanations.
excellent interview!!!!! two of the three greatest breathing experts.... I loved the book by Mr Nestor. PLEASE Mr McKeown: next time ask Mr Nestor to help you write the book. You are highly knowledgeable and brilliant -but reading your book is difficult....
I have obstructive sleep apnea. I need to get a chin strap again. I have a full-face mask because I've had sinus trouble in the past. A few months before I started using a CPAP machine, I had a septoplasty that I chose to have done because my septum was 90% deviated. I was tired of sounding like I had a cold, even on the best day, when singing, let alone speaking. Since using CPAP, I haven't had a serious chest infection. I generally breathe through my nose, something I truly wish I'd been able to do as a child with constant sinus trouble. It's so, so sad how much we don't pay attention to mouth-breathing, and how much it hurts us. These two gentlemen are wonderful. I love hearing them share ideas back and forth. Thank you both so, so much!
Thanks so much for sharing your story @LostJedi26. Much appreciated. Thank you for your kind words. It's great to hear how things have improved for you. Best of luck in the future.
When a mother is able to naturally and fully breasfeed their babies , the baby LEARNS to nose breathe - naturally . My friends baby was on a respirator in the start , came out of that with what I saw with athsma in my child -- I got her latched on to her mom's boob , and said wait a bit , she will re balance . It worked . All the athsma symptoms stopped - Supposedly asthma is over breathing - the lungs are trying to close down the intake by puffing up the ventricles , or whatever I am NOT a doctor or even a breastfeeding advisor . I just did it and had a lot of experience . Anyway , the best thing you can give your child for life, is a breastfed infancy , toddlerhood and sometimes ... through early childhood . My last baby , who is a 6 '3 woman now , so she was a tall long baby , she fed on the breast until late 4 years old , when I would wean , she would get exzema . In anycase , dads that means supporting your woman , emotionally and physically , during the time that they are suppporting your baby with her body . In my opinion , better than college education , is breastfeeding your baby . PS , it also keeps mom calm and happy and relaxed , if mom is loved and safe during that time .
My granddaughter is a Nordic ski racer. I suggested she talk to her coach about nasal breathing. There's no mention of it. I suggested nasal breathing while she races. She told me she can't catch her breath doing that. There are so many benefits if people learn how to breath properly. i wish the medical community would learn about these studies to help their patients. i have done breath courses and I'm almost 80, extremely active, live in high altitude and have no problems. There are seniors who live around me and many are on oxygen. Your books would be invaluable!
Are used to clear my throat all the time because I was a mouth breather now I breathe through my nose my sleep is better my mornings are better my life is better thank you. I’m 68.
Hi Patrick and James! Thank you very much for all your fantastic work! Do you think is a good idea to reduce the breathing to a small airhunger while doing the cadence breathing? Or would you recommend rather not to combine the two techniques? Thank you guys and keep spreading your highly important messages!
James, spot on. I mouth breathed probably my whole life. There were brief times were it was dusty or something that it was like, oh you have this cool filter nose, use it. But in general no. I may still snore, time to mouth tape finally after a year of breath work, and nose only exercising. Cold therapy definitely helped me nose breath better. The reason this isn't popular is that it's hard to figure out why you can't nose breath and then what to do about it. I tried back then and didn't have good info on what to do. If you can nose breath you'd never suggest it or think it's weird you can't nose. It's just the way you are.
It can be difficult for newcomers @scoobtoober2975, But by staying persistent with learning proper breathing techniques, you can massively improve your health and wellbeing.
When visiting Maui, there was a local free driver who grew up spear fishing. He could dive for 7 minutes while spearfishing. Absolutely insane. 10 years later and it still blows my mind. Hope you’re still doing your thing my friend, mahalo!
Hi Christian. Generally, after meals it is advisable to do gentle slow and soft breathing. More important is how you breathe during the day, rest and sleep. Not to overeat as it exerts a big impact on breathing.
Are there any side effects to doing these exercises initially? I am definitely seeing the benefits at this early stage, but I also sometimes observe spikes in anxiety and pulse (not sure about BP, haven't measured) also a little bit of pain in my head. Could this be the body or nervous system adapting to changes? Like blood ph/chemical levels? Or the nervous system adapting to a more parasympathetic state?? James Nestor mentioned he was sweating hard during his first Breathing session, before he delved into the subject.. Why was that? thanks.
2 lifelong students here. When James is talking, Patrick is fascinated and when Patrick is talking, James is taking notes. Great to watch
absolutely!!! These guys are just amazing, it is awesome information so grateful to have found them !! :) Have a great day!
Aren't we all lifelong students?
BEEN SAYING THIS 4-8YRS...
Bless you. You planted a seed in their mind, that one day they will remember. x
I am 82 with COPD. I read both their books. My lungs have not felt this good in a long time. I was a mouth breather. I am going to explore Wim Hof.
Just be careful wihh Wim Hof if you have any underlying breathing problems. My asthma has come back with a vengeance after practicing Wim Hof's breathing technique
I would advice you to steer clear of wim. These days he struggles breathing when talking
You do Wim and you’ll feel like your back in the 70’’s at club 54 with the BeeGees pumping in the background...
@@Vengiism really? I hadn’t heard about this.
@@Jonathan-mp3ju It's true nonsense
I'm in tears... I've been helped so much. Thank you James and Patrick.
I have read both of their books and, as a physician, I can honestly say that all my colleagues could learn a lot from listening to these two guys!

A lot of overlap. But I needed this overlap because sometimes James wasn't very clear about some points that's patrick was, and vice versa.
Yes beautiful, delighted to have learned so much from these two absolute pros✌️✌️
Interesting. I don’t see them thinking of each other as rivals. I see them more as colleagues/collaborators. This was a great, informative conversation.
I have seen every interview on patrick and what comes across in a genuine compassionate human being what a gift to health he is.
I've been studying this topic for years, and have been trying to reconcile the opinions of experts who say breathe lightly while others advocate deep breathing. It was such a relief to hear James Nestor confirm my belief that there is not one single method that works for everyone. Thank you!
We completely agree @SustainableSantaCruz
That's why there are so many different breathing exercises in the OA program.

Thanks so much for commenting and for your support @sharonhill349,
Your journey to better health is the kind of thing people need to hear to inspire them to make similar beneficial changes.
Kids sizes are also available.
how do you keep teh tape on ! I always pull it off in my sleep !
I love watching Patrick listen to people. He's such a focused, curious listener.
Two phenomenal men helping us to improve our daily lives
Maybe the best video on Breathing ive seen this year, thank you both so much, we need this message of healthy nasal breathing to get out to the masses
Great to see you here! Love your videos. I think a vid on Buteyko explaining that it's not about the timing of the breath but on it's speed/depth would be really great for people on your channel. Slow, quiet, soft, gentle are great cues.
Thanks very much for your comment. I agree. Patrick
Which exercises specifically?
What kind of excercises do you do?
@@patmanpatmanson But wim hof doesn't advocate nose breathing, he doesn't care what you breathe through. I got a much worse case of mouth breathing and overbreathing by consistently doing wim hof.
start reducing your breaths per minute... that make wonders... also tape your mouth at night ...
I’ve listen to both of your books and I can’t tell you how effective it’s been in the last two weeks since I’ve read them. kudos to both of you💕💕💕
So glad you were able to find them helpful @pamprice6822.
Thanks for the comment.
100% agree
same think happen to me
I started mouth taping a month ago- it's honestly changed my life in so many ways😊
Amazing!!

I've been hiding for about six months and feel amazing 🙏❤️
You should take the breathing part(Guided Wim Hof Method Breathing) as a refference/guideline
If you do less, or slower etc...ets fine, as long as you keep dong et indefinitely
Still breath in via nose
exale nose(wim does through mouth, maybe exale is not as important but still i say nose)
Second part is the power of the brain , when exaling FEEL relaxation coming from your head to your soul/sol/soular plexus
effective
Wim hof interview with russle brand at around 18th minute.
He basicly tells us that breathing is the main thing(along with the power of the mind )
@@DarkoP9.13 I appreciate you taking the time to share this. I’ll check out the Russel Brand interview. Thanks.
SSAME. I’m so glad to be witnessing them both talking.
How are you doing with implementing the techniques? :-) Doing yoga and naddi shudi alternate nostril breathing has taught me to be a nose breather.
Hi Joe, could you elaborate how Patrick's techniques have enhanced your Wim Hof practice ? Thanks.
I wear a watch that tracks sleep. Before I mouth taped I was getting roughly 2 hours of deep sleep according to the watch a night. I started mouth taping
ose breathing and that changed to 4-5 hours deep sleep a night. I feel better when I wake up. This is just my experience but for me it has helped.
Nice! I'm just barely scratching the 2 hour mark after a year. But it's not all the week.

What's this your talking about?

God lord what do they do
Really enjoyed this interview. It's all pranayama in the end.

I do a daily practice for 20 minutes, but I make sure always to nose breathe, I
make sure to breathe slowly and calmly.
Book along with Patrick's work is changing my life! Thank you.
Keep up with the content and spreading the information. I came upon you after getting braces, so I will continue with the orthodontics but have tried to implement tongue posture, mouth taping and nasal breathing
Well done Steve. Patrick
Gee i love you guys, so comforted by your knowledge
Thanks for the enthusiasm and the comment
@Skattie.
Much appreciated.
"Breathing is the anchor"! Great video really enjoy your work!
Thank You for your talk about the power of breath. Great video and conversation. Keep up!
Thank you for this! I really needed to hear the bit about comparing breathing to rowing a boat.
Thank you for this vital information to improve health and wellbeing!🙏🏻❤️
I tried Patrick McKeown's breathing excersises and it works! My asthma condition has improved .
thank you very much.
Thank you both for your generosity, sooo helpful!
I’ve just bought your book on audible...thank you
One of the best interviews I’ve heard.. 👏👏👏
Excellent podcast. Thank you, Patrick.
These two are the BEST!
Hi Patrick and James! Thank you very much for all your fantastic work! Do you think is a good idea to reduce the breathing to a small airhunger while doing the cadence breathing? Or would you recommend rather not to combine the two techniques? Thank you guys and keep spreading your highly important messages!
What a majic combination of characters - brilliant thank you. Breath maketh man.
I am reading the book now. Absolutely eye opening regarding facial deformities.
It can be difficult for newcomers @scoobtoober2975,
But by staying persistent with learning proper breathing techniques, you can massively improve your health and wellbeing.
When visiting Maui, there was a local free driver who grew up spear fishing. He could dive for 7 minutes while spearfishing. Absolutely insane. 10 years later and it still blows my mind. Hope you’re still doing your thing my friend, mahalo!
Ive had wierd problems for a few years . When you eat definitely plays a big part in how we breath and how our stomach sits against our lungs
Why was that? thanks.
🌠💜💫🌟✨🛐💟🌍 many thanks for making this information available and easy to understand ❤❤❤❤❤
