SPB isn't just an another singer. He's an emotion and a part of Tamil culture, particularly of 80's...I am born in 78 but somehow I feel like having a cup of Coffee,. Breakfast at a Madras hotel in the mid 80's to 90s ..in the morning listening to SPB songs..Thats the emotion , culture..
No one can beat SPB’s personality!!! Everyone wants to be around him and his persona was really infectious! Take any concert, he appreciates his co-stars and musicians and I haven’t seen the vice-versa much.
At times even mano use to sing right? And from 2000, singers like hariharan and shankar mahadevan started singing in telugu followed by ttippu and karthik and many young singers. So we can't say that he was the only one till 2010

The amazing thing about SPB, listening to his stage performances (as opposed to studio recordings) in the last 3-4 years, was his ability to keep to Shruthi n his ability to keep to timing at his age. Many older singers gasp for breath n lose their timing or struggle to reach their high notes. But not SPB.
Sir, here I have to share one thing, I am 50 years now. Basically I am a music lover. From my child good, I hear SPB songs in telugu, tamil, kannada and hindi. For other language music lovers I have to tell one truth. in SPB sir career, one telugu music director has more importance. He is none other than Mr. CHAKRAVARTHI. He did music direction for 975 films in 25 years span. SPB sang 95% of songs in his music direction. I request for all SPB music lovers, just hear SPB sir telugu songs. He given perfect voice modulation for all top actors at time NTR, ANR, KRISHNA, SOBHANBABU, CHIRANJIVI. You can hear SPB sir perfect voice transformation in telugu songs only. I didn't under estimate his presence in tamil and kannada. But for perfect voice modulation you have to hear his telugu songs....
Spb is the last of those singers who gives equal prominence to the lyrics. Be it any language. He never kept the lyrics aside. He highlighted the emotion of words and pronounced well without missing the musical beauty unlike many of today's singers who thinks pronouncing bad is trendy and stylish
In telugu nobody knows names of singers in a film these days.... Only SPB enjoyed that status in Telugu cinema at least from late 80s and 90s.... now after decades one guy managed to be known for his voice across industries and that's Sid Sriram.. BTW SPB acted in titular role in a Beautiful Telugu film called mithunam... do watch it
@baddy, I m not sure about other languages! But it's SPB and him only that ruled telugu film industry for at least 2 decades.... 🙏🙏 🙏 Godly figure for singing community!!
I'm a Telugu guy but I feel that Tamilians truly respect SPB a lot. It's understandable considering SPB started singing at a time when both Telugu and Tamil film industries had their roots in Tamil Nadu. However, I don't think Andhra Pradesh or Telangana governments would have paid for his hospital bills like Tamil Nadu did. My deepest #Respect for that.
I always thought of SPB & Illayaraja as THE singer-composer duo... Thank you BR for introducing me to SPB-MSV combination... I heard Enakuru Kadhali after pausing your video at 27:00, and I'm still tripping over it... What a beauty... I guess the best way to eulogize a great artist, is by ensuring that every generation is introduced to it..
Probably BR not done enough research about SPBs stardom!! He seemed fixed in his belief without the stats!! SPB was the number 1 singer in 1. Telugu - Not even close No.2 singer 2. Kannada - every movie song was dominated by SPB. I fact bigger legends like vishnuvardhan signed movies With agreement SPB should sing all songs 3. Tamil - Ofcourse Yesudas was there. But they sang 10-20% of songs sung by SPB. Not just the count SPB had 60% more hits. Also SPB passed on songs which were later sung by Malaysia Vasudevan and others.. Sprry to day but many times other singers were 2nd or 3rd choice which SPB couldn’t sing due to health issues or throat operation or busy in other language..No comparison SPB is numero uno by miles and space PERIOD.
Come on baddy. 80s and most of 90s SPB clearly was numero uno in Tamil and Telugu. Others were popular but were clearly not anywhere close to spb. He did rule those industries at least during that period without a doubt.
I have become an evangelist for this song because no one seems to remember it but it is a great number - Thalaiyai kuniyum thamaraiye from Orru odai nathi agirathu. Also based on a ragam
9:48 Continuing the answer: Ajith from Secunderabad Kamal from Kerala Rajni from Karnataka Even actors like vaibhav, anjali, anaadi were recognised as they behaved like tamilians and respected tamil
Could you please do an FC recco everyday, on old songs alone. I really want to discover these old songs and start appreciating them, however do not know from where to start due to the sheer number of options available. A weekly trend can work. Eg. Monday is SPB, Tuesday is Malaysia Vasudevan etc. I know putting out videos daily night not be feasible, but at least a post in Instagram or a story in RUclips or something.
One of the person asking the question that how SPB became popular with Tamil people was ridiculously naïve. Anybody with talent can make it big in the Tamil world, Almost all the singers before 90s in Tamil were of a different mother tongue, SPB, TMS, Jesudas, P susheela, Janaki, Chithra and Jency. Also, the actors Rajinikanth, Mohan, Arjun, Prakash Raj etc made their money and fame over there, not to forget all the South Indian films before 80s were made in studios located in Madras.
A very enjoyable discussion. Thanks. One thought I did have - I think it is not right to talk of SPB and TMS in a comparative vein. I think they were an entirely different breed of singers. TMS came from the MKT school of singing, SPB I think came from the PBS school of singing. I see SPB more a PBS next-gen. I wish you had talked more on comparing their styles than SPB and TMS. When you talk about philosophical songs, a song like PBS' "manithan enbavan" is much closer to SPB style than an "Ullan enbathu aamai". Of course, not comparing the merits here. Both I consider among the best ever Tamil songs. And I have seen SPB himself has sung PBS' melodies more often than TMS. His rendition of PBS' "nilave enniDam nerungaade" was memorable.
In Telugu..He was Only Top Singer for certain period. Many singers can come but So..called Playback singing will be gone with him. We can easily find Hero in song by listening to his songs ..that how he maintains mannerisms
The only time I loved Carnatic music was in shankarabaranam...the Carnatic songs sound too boring and heavy when MS or pattamal or sudha raghunathan etc. sing. pls I haven’t found an artiste who was so versatile... Its so easy to guess karthik or sid sriram voice... very few artists can change their voice to any type of music and SPB has to be commended for that!!!!
I guess you are wrong as for tamil cinema was concerned, he was way ahead of Malaysia vasudevan and Jesudos. He was the leading singer in Tamil during 80s and early 90s. Them there was Mano even Hariharan for sometime. Then they too faded away from Tamil. Alex portrayed this clearly in his program.
Out of the 40,000+ songs, SPB sir sang more songs in Kannada, so kindly consider doing remembering SPB with respect to Kannada and also Telugu. Rajan-Nagendra duo used SPB, similar to MSV, whereas Hamsalekha used SPB similar to Ilayaraja, and Sadhu/Gurukiran used SPB as ARR.
@BR Listen to Shankara naadasaripara from Shanakarabaranam and Annamaya songs sung by SPB. Not mentioning these songs in a SPB special is an insult to him. May be you didn't listen or might have misses it.
I am not trying to challenge your knowledge or talent. My humble observation. I have gone through every old song. Say about 15. From Ayiram Nileve Va till Unnodu oru nal (Uravdum Nenjam) Earlier SPB did sound to be singing either in false voice or under some stage fright. I took the list from Discography of Wikipedia. Please check. Ever since Unnodu oru nal he really got into himself and sang with baritone, lots of improvisation, chuckles. Sorry sir, home work is not enough. You may not revert or acknowledge. It is fine. I am 66 years old and a decent bathroom singer. Now with whatever time left I will try to emulate minimum 5 songs and I will choose one with high pitch lik Anjali Anjali en uyir kathali.
Disagree with you that after the SPB, Susheela, Janaki generation, singers were losing their vocal identity, thanks to technology. Chitra, Hariharan, Shankar M n Karthik, just to name a few, have distinctive voices that technology can’t change.
He is a great legend!!!! He is not comparable to TMS or RAFI - but who the hell can sing 40,000 plus songs in so many languages in one life time!!!
