I think the biggest worry for a lot of fans is that if the players themselves create their own offline patch then Ubisoft will pull a Nintendo and sue the people trying to revive The Crew. Sure, EA didn't do that when players revived NFS World but the difference is that EA never released a sequel to NFS World. Whereas Ubisoft released 2 sequels to The Crew and they might consider an offline patch for The Crew 1 a threat to their sales of The Crew Motorfest and whatever new Crew games they might release years later.

It's like how Driver San Francisco was pulled from every store not even like 5 years after it came out. Ubisoft really has a bad track record with racing games.

    • @OfficialDJSoru
      @OfficialDJSoru Месяц назад +4

Here's the thing. One thing is delisting a game, another is rendering the game INACCESSIBLE for people who paid for the game in the first place.
Driver: San Francisco can still be downloaded and played by those who have bought the digital copy. Only people locked out are those who didn't buy it in time, and the delisting is down to the obvious reason: real world car brand licensing. But notice that detail: people who already purchased the game can still access it after it was delisted. This will be important in the next point.
The Crew, despite being pushed as this MMO, can essentially be Solo'ed in every single thing apart from playing the cop role in crate delivery missions (basically this means 90% of the game could be played offline), AND people had to pay upfront for access to it in the first place (people who got it for free on the Ubi Club like me are out of the discussion so I'm talking in support of those who paid). Those who paid for it should at the very least maintain offline access to their copy of the game as a post-End of Life patch akin to what GT Sport had, since Ubisoft and Ivory Tower clearly refused to go down the Hellgate London/Test Drive Unlimited path (Offline+Online) or Forza Horizon/Burnout Paradise path (seamless offline/online). Those examples I mentioned still work without an internet connection, TC1 does not.
Oh, and since this whole campaign started, Ubisoft went beyond shutting down TC1's servers, and has now removed the game's support page so that you can't directly make the support ticket required for filing the complaint to that consumer protection agency mentioned in the website Eden talked about in the video. Oh, and to rub salt on the wounds you can't even download the game from your Ubisoft account anymore, meaning they haven't just delisted the game from the store, they're *triggering the killswitch for the game on every single Ubisoft player account that has it*.
In this showcase of damage control I think Ubisoft might just be digging the grave deeper on this matter.

Millions and millions of copies, now paperweights. It's a disgrace to the devs, the players, and consumers in general...not to mention the environmental impact - how many people out of the millions who have physical copies are gonna hear the news and just throw it away, cause they don't care?

What you're saying about other industries is true and it's already happening. Without getting into details, companies go more and more into "don't care about the customer" mode and basically want us to spend more money on their products. Without any exaggeration, they want to control us: what we do, what we buy and what we use.
If we don't speak up, they will keep doing stuff and it will get worse and worse over time. It's about time we tell those companies why they exist in the first place.

Agreed! When Gran Turismo 7 was released, I was very upset to find out that it's online only, despite having a lot of single player content. If Sony and Polyphony releases a Gran Turismo 8, and it's online only, and the servers to Gran Turismo Sport and 7 shut down, we have to boycott Gran Turismo 8 until Polyphony releases an offline patch to Gran Turismo Sport and 7.
EDIT: I watched the video to the end, and he said that Polyphony did release an offline patch to Gran Turismo Sport! I didn't know about this! I didn't think they would actually do that! But holy hell, they did! Let's go!!! Woo!! :D

This isn't a new thing for Ubisoft. They've deleted a TON of games. Games like HAWX 1 and 2, Endwar, RUSE, and many more are impossible or hard to get now. With those at least you can still get them and play them, but the DLC and some Uplay rewards are inaccessible. For example if you want to use the Super Pershing in RUSE you can't get it on Uplay anymore despite it replacing the Pershing and being an objective upgrade.

Need For Speed World was not originally free to play. I purchased it when it was in beta and got some beta vinyls for that. It remained a game that needed to be purchased into the final release. I was a bit upset when it became free to play because I bought it. I'm not sure if I could have asked for a refund when they did that.
As far as the cell phone argument: I had a 2G phone when 2G was no longer supported. I needed to get a different phone for the 3G that all towers were using.

    • @ekinteko
      @ekinteko 2 месяца назад +1

Yes, but that 2G/3G/4G shift came from your government and carrier networks. It didn't come from the Phone Manufacturer. And your phone still works for other functions. Let say, you can still access the Notes App or Calculator App or whatnot.
Besides, phones got old fast. You wouldn't want to use a 1G/2G/3G phone in today. The days of 5G. Heck even phones that are 2018 and older, which are exclusively 4G may not be a good experience now in 2025. With all the OLED burn-in, Battery degradation, and slow processors. A luxury USD $999 phone would lose to a midrange USD $300 phone.
So I'm saying the REALLY old products (eg iPhone 4S to iPhone 3G and older) and standards should be depreciated. But the slightly old products (eg iPhone 11max to iPhone 5) should still be allowed to work normally.

I agree with this point. Personally as a indie software/game developer I mostly play old games from when middlemen were not a problem at all. Because times were different and the large AAA studios were managed with fewer staff members. Now you have like 32 different staff members 80 presidents and 8 programmers and 50 graphics designers. They really are working outside of their manifests capabilities. Over ambitious and in the end they cancel everything. So I find old games such as quake 3 or doom 3 more attractive. They were made with care and not focused on "how much money we get in the end" moto. They simply became the elite of gaming forever, because they did not focus on getting there. They focused on the narrative, the quality of it and that they would be functional for generations. Another great example of this would be half-life 2 and max payne 2. Complete masterpieces that changed gaming forever. And both were kind enough to share tools for the community (not the guidelines but the people who form it.) to expand the original piece of software, to even further expand the lifetime of the product, making it more appealing for much more people. The funny fact that these people cared very little of piracy, they became notoriously the most high ranked companies and amongst the most richest. Following the same moto as previously mentioned elites, now there are even more. Rockstar Games, Remedy, 3D Realms, ID Software. All of these companies are elites, because these companies understand the dynamic market and the importance of availability. Where as EA is now struggling because of some bad choices. None of the latest games have been a major success compared to lets say Red Dead Redemption or Counter Strike. Because they care about the players and they don't restrict them who don't have money. They simply explain why its necessary and leave you to decide if you really want to support their ideas or not. And look where they are now. World widely known, even with pirated multiplayer games, they are still making millions over millions and even billions. Because now the rich and poor get along in a space where there are no actual boundaries set directly by capitalism. People really need to start thinking about the betterment of the society. Adding moding as a possibility of the original software is actually a way to make the devs directly communicate with players. This is why the remedy and valve games have so much success. Because they care about their products. Heading even further back to 2000's there are even more great examples of some great games that actually never wanted to make money, but made millions. I know money is what is causing this. Because only greedy people think this way. "Oh my dev's made the crew 2, My server is costing 10k, there is not enough room to keep the profiles of the crew 1. I'll just delete it!" That is just greed from people who don't care about games at all. The only posessions they have is to use the workforce on another title to make more money. That is not the way a real elite thinks. That type of thinking resembles a drug addict waiting for a new dose. I am well aware of many of the big comppanis staff has changed a lot, so this might have caused this, where politics and corruption have simply evaded the space, so that they could further manipulate you through video games. Because the similarities are there. The games are bare in terms of content, and simple enough that a idiot could get some satisfaction out of it. It's sad but I noticed this dumbing down started happen when the studios started making these new over ambitious games, that have a lot of detail, but very little quality. As if the artist have to satisfy the CEO's with beautiful render's in order to get a guarantee for the next salary at all. It looks that wild... My suggestion would be, stop hiring your beautiful friends as the staff. And start thinking, what is good for the IP and how it would stand on its own, even if it lost the development budget. As this is exactly what Max Payne 2 seems to be. The SDK that you are able to download from the internet, enables you basically complete access to the game's engine via a editor that is very similar to Unity. I call it forward thinking and extremely clever. Because even if your game fails in the market, you are now able to self fund it. Add voice acting, model some 3D models, take some photos and you are ready to set up a narrative based cinematic experience that is interactable. I never bought the crew, exactly because I suspected it would fail because of always being online. And it did! It's a shame, because when I played the free version, it was seriously fun and engaging. Therefore I agree with the perspectives of this video.

Great video bro. Another thing to think about on game preservation down the line, particularly on consoles, is the availability of patches. I watched a video recently speculating the PS3 could go offline in the next couple years. Putting aside how much (or how little) weight that speculation holds, what that tells me is that sometime down the line you’ll never be able to pick up a game you’ve been meaning to play for years and play it in its absolute best, polished, and complete form. Take GT Sport as an extreme example, its great that PD released an offline patch, but if/when the PS4 gets taken offline, anyone wanting to check the game out probably won’t be able to get the offline patch, rendering it equally unplayable as this current situation with The Crew.

I played the Crew (got it free but don’t remember how) and I enjoyed it, not enough to go hard into it because even then I knew, Ubisoft - live game service… this is going to go away eventually. I think I was still coming off the Need For Speed MMO because I really enjoyed that game. But yeah preservation is very important because now it’s just lost media. I think as gamers, we kind of need to organize around these services either make it so these titles go open source and are handed off to the community to keep it alive, or at the very least, surgeon general warning that sh1t before the start screen, “This is a live service game and may go offline at any given time and will be unplayable.” Even though a lot of us all know this, I don’t think it’s really drilled into our heads that the 60 (now 70 to 80) dollar game that we purchased, may go away at any point because we don’t actually own the game. We just purchased a license to play it, but a license that could be revoked at any given time. That is a bad deal, a bad practice and something we should never stand for.

The sad thing is that The Crew apparently had an offline mode (not sure if it was completed) but since being onlne is a great DRM, Ubissoft didn't opted for including it and now they most likely wont spend a single $ to implement it to preserve the game.

I didn’t like how the crew only had Cape Cod in Massachusetts, we gonna pretend Boston dosnt exist?

Our Motorstorm crew learned the hard way when the Apocalypse servers went down and we lost our crewlivery, cars and items. Some third party servers got up after that but whe also lost our love for the game. Developers should realize that people collect games. If I want to play Dirt2 to race against Ken Block (RIP) I still can.

The Crew franchise lost all it's personality after the Crew 1. The map is cutback and never used in 2, all progression and mmo aspect went away. The story went from gritty to Forza Horizon wish edition. You don't even have a crew anymore. No more 5-10 just let's go race and partyyy woooo. I played the entire first game on wheel without using teleportation and discovered all the map, went coast to coast multiple times it was amazing.

The same happened to *Forza Horizon 3!* BUT! Forza Horizon is, unlike The Crew, still playable in *off-line mode!* 😃

10:50 You just described the iPhone. They literally have planned obsolescense (or however you spell it), as you described it

Modern phone manufacturers already do planned obsolescence, no? I mean 2-5 years update cycle is a slap in the face for ppl who actually use & take care of their phones for more than 5 years.
That being said, phone modding & customisations have been a thing since forever now and that's one way to preserve phones one way or another. I'm currently running android 13 on my customised xiaomi redmi note 7 that feels way lighter than it's stock rom.

The difference between NFS 2015 and The Crew is that EA is tolerant of the fan patches and stuff as long as the people who made them aren’t making money off of them.
I think there’s a pretty fair chance that community serves and patches for NFS2015 will be safe.
Difference with The Crew is Ubisoft I don’t trust one bit. Listen, if they be calling themselves the first AAAA studio then I’m calling BS (especially when the first ever AAAA sucks)

Typical Ubisoft. They just kill the game when it stops being profitable. it's the same situation as with Driver SF the Game was deleted form online stores Because license has expired

For these people, i think you can make an analogy with the Portal games.
Imagine if you bought Portal and Portal 2, and now you can only play Portal 2. It's crazy

Gotta love live-service games. Once the developers pull the plug, you can't play them anymore. It totally sucks if you think about that when it comes to your favorite game.

The Crew 1 should also not be written off because of TC2 because, get this, if you bought something, and then someone comes along and takes it from you, and tells you to buy the sequel instead of letting you keep the one you already paid for, that's still just as messed up. Not only you lose acces to the first but they want you to spend money on the second? BS

The only hope I can see out of this shutdown is 1 of 2 things.
    1) they remake the game like need for speed has done for some of its older titles. If they really do remake this game it would be awesome to see the new graphics and HAVE A WAY TO PLAY OFFLINE (
