  • Today I am training my blue throated macaw Jinx and my project blue throated macaw Ava together for the first time. It was all going really well but then Ava flew at Jinx… twice! Was I wrong about Ava all along?

Jinx was probably hoping ava would show her true feathers, and was saying: i didn't wanna say it Mom but, that woman is crazy, get her away from me.

I had this happen to me, my older bird was being mean to the younger, and I was treating the whole situation as such. One day the younger got tired of being the victim, dive bombed my older bird and the situation flipped upside down. Now I had this 2 yo bird terrified of the newcomer, and the younger only got nastier from there 😢

I definitely appreciate you Jamie. I appreciate your whole family and what you do for the birds. I have leaned a lot from you and it has helped in transitioning her after I adopted her from a local avian rescue. She lived most of her life in a cage (17 years) but now she is a free bird, and is very happy
and is slowly learning to trust me and enjoy her new my new cockatoo

I'm going through the same stuff with my dogs. We have to keep the two separated. Hopefully Ava and Jinx will eventually get along. Thank you for the awesome video Jamie!! Hope you, Dave, and Capri are doing well. Have a nice day!!

Oh I feel you. It's so hard when dogs don't get along inside. Friends of me have had to have their 2 ridgebacks seperated for over 3 years and it's super stressfull. (They were really good together, but after one was still a bit drowsy after a surgery, the other one spooked her and since then they are only fine outside of the house together)

Certainly hope it's not heading in the wrong direction, but if it is, I also know you correct it.
Thank you Jamie, Jinx and Ava!👍❤️

My only question is why are you treating Ava when she flies to you when you did not call her? Jinx seems to know the rules, most of the time.
Oh and thanks for filming this. I love to see them fly at home. They have to be capable and want to train.

Even she didn't ask her to fly to her . She still did it anyway. You need to give her a treat

I have the same question. In other training videos I've seen other owners discouraged from treating for uncued flights. Maybe it's a particular stage of her training where they want her excited to fly and they will work on cues later.

I wasn't asking for perfect recall in this situation. I wanted to reinforce focused, calm flights to me rather than them paying attention to each other.

@BirdTricks isn't that just changing expectations from one day to the next? Do you not think that would confuse the birds? Just curious ❤😊

I sent an email to you about white lung. My macaw passed way from the powder produced by African greys. I didn’t know this was toxic to them. Specifically toxic to blue and gold and that was what my Mac boy was. 😢😢😢😢😢

Fascinating training session, and so good to see them training so much closer. Wonder if Ava is growing in confidence, while Jinx is relaxing around her, that then resulted in her trying out being the more dominant one? Or possibly she was upset as he was in tree closer to where you were sitting? In that training session she was flying towards you while you had Jinx, could that have reinforced that flying towards him was okay?

I’ve been fooling at this video and Ava has also been fluffing up and staring at jinx so I think she might also be a part of the problem

I wanted to email you to explain further but IF YOU OWN AND BLUE AND GOLD MACAW DO NOT HAVE THEM IN THE SAME BREATHING SPACE AS A AFRICAN GREY. African greys produce a powder and it causes white lung disease to blue and gold macaws SPECIFICALLY! I found my sweet Mac on the bottom of his cage and he was only 17. That’s what caused it. I’ve posted them on social together for years and nobody has ever even mentioned white lung. I’m heart broken.

I am missing most of this. No one really saw what happened. Just an assumption. But I did quickly realize you are on Jinx's side. He is so much yours, and you want the best for him, Ava was ignored and blamed. You moved on, but not before comforting him. Animals, kids are all the same. You tell us to ignore the bad attitude and move past that quickly. But in this scenario, it is obvious who is the special bird. Really study the video and try to see what started it. Even people can only put up with being the object of another's attitude for so long before they retaliate. I just believe we are all seeing it one-sided. I do also learn so much from watching. I try to watch my videos to see what I might have missed.

Well done 👏🏼 I think you do such an awesome job with them ❤ poor jinx looks like yeah mom it was her all along, me just an innocent little boy 🥺😇I have a question though lately my two sun conures have been sometimes doing what happened here and one is hanging upside down and other isn’t letting him up and they’re beak sword fighting as I call it , then later they are cuddling and preening each other, should I be concerned or do something about it? They’re fine most of the time but I worry if I should be doing something about it or whether to let them sort it out amongst themselves? Thanks for another great video ❤

Thank you for sharing! I also noticed, that you treated Ava often when you did not call her (as billy-go9kx already pointed out). Maybe she knew it was "wrong" and when she got the treats nevertheless she thougt herself your favourite. I'm rather new in watching your videos so I don't know if macaws tend to establish a pecking order and maybe she wanted to use this momentum? Or maybe she was angry with you and flew at him instead. That is something I experienced with horses.

Random question- what coloured paper is safe for birds? (Budgies and cockatiels specifically) I was told construction paper is fine (but to avoid red for some reason) just wanted to get some more input. Love your videos!!

You posted this a month ago, so maybe youve made some progress by now. I hope so, but if not, here is what worked with out GCC. We got our GCC about 5 months ago. She was 2, so a little older. We took it very very slow at first. For a few days, we just sat next to the cage. We didnt try to coax her to us, we just sat near her and talked to her sometimes. I dont remember exactly when, but we eventually opened the cage and just held out a long piece of millet. She eventually took a bite. We gradually shortened the millet until we could get closer and closer to her without her getting too nervous. Once we could get her to eat a piece of millet right out of our fingers, we started moving the millet away so she would have to come to us. I wish I could tell you exactly how long it took, but it really wasnt long before we were holding the millet at the door and she was jumping down to sit on the edge of the cage to eat her millet. One day she just started jumping on our hands and we were able to slowly get her spending time out of the cage. It was just one step at a time, going at her own pace. Never push too hard or grab your bird. Our bird's favorite treats are millet and apples. She also loves fresh mint, especially the stems. Seriously, shes the most lovable birdie with the cutest personality. All birds are a little different but maybe this is something you havent tried yet. Let me know how it's going. Good luck!

I think you let the training session go for a bit too long....quit on a positive note. When you find yourself saying 'one more rep', that was your last rep.
