I’m at 10 minutes in the video and I needed to comment to say what a superb group this is. I’ve seen dozens of these, so I know you’re all awesome of course, but the first 10 minutes could be shown at “Board Game School” for how to be a good group during rules explanations.
I am always the one who reads the rules and teaches the game (and I love doing it!). I sympathise a great deal with Dave in these videos, so when he seems a teeny tiny bit off in his rules it is utterly fantastic to see the group politely correcting him and he politely receiving it and modifying what he said. Really excellent, super pleased, just...yes 🤗

This! I love that they gently correct and also don't jump in with lots of 'what does this do?' questions. It's so annoying when people interrupt a rules explanation like that - I'm explaining it in a certain order for a reason, let me finish!

    • @NinjarioPicmin

@@lynette4119 oh yeah i know exactly what you are talking about. My father interrupts me all the time when i am explaining something and asking questions like "but what ends the game" "what are the dice for then" and many more, even though i prepared myself and know exactly in which order it makes much more sense for them to understand, it does not help to know some things before you know others.

      @@NinjarioPicmin
Something I've noticed is that often an order that makes sense to one person doesn't work as well for another - where one person related everything back to the victory conditions, another relates everything back to the turn sequence, and a third relates everything back to the tiles in play. Someone wants to have everything they can see explained, and then get how they fit together in a bottom-up, detail oriented manner; someone else wants the broad overview and how the various aspects fit together before delving into the actual components in a top-down big picture fashion.
If someone keeps interrupting your explanation, it's possible that they're just a lousy listener, but it's also possible that you're explaining it the way that would work for you, not the way that works best for them. Obviously, I don't know you or your father, and there definitely are some people who just don't (or even can't) pay attention to a rules explanation, and you end up having to continue to teach during play, but it might be worth thinking about whether you can restructure your rules explanations to fit them better.
I know I've had times I've been taught games and not found a hook to hang my understanding of the game on until three-quarters of the way through the explanation - and it's a lot harder to learn that way than if they'd led with the hook and built out from there. The catch, of course, being that different people will have different hooks.

Great video. Love Dave’s explanations with the others listening carefully and adding in relevant extra points. You are all taking the rules seriously which is good as it can get a boring/annoying in other videos where people mess around too much and talk too much about irrelevant things and it becomes hard to follow the rules then. You all have a good time playing and it is enjoyable to watch. The summary is a very good idea.

Edit: I don’t know if anyone has pointed this out yet, but I believe in round 6, Nikki’s second red mushroom chit should also have moved up one space from the pumpkin. She only added an extra space to the first one so all her pieces after and including the second mushroom should have been ahead one more space.

17:50 Nikki playing the first round and draws the white 3 to bring her white total to 7 with the only two non-white chips from the bag already on the board. Both Dave and Lincoln say "you can't draw anything" - I don't think that is correct. If she draws another chip she will explode the pot since everything in her bag is white, however she has the option to explode the pot if moving ahead another space gave more purchasing power for ingredients (or moved her to a ruby space) and she wasn't interested in the victory points. There's nothing in the rules that says you have to stop when you have 7 white; Round 1 is the best place to forfeit the victory points (and possibly get a rat tail or two). Later in the game you can have 7 white in the pot and still have 10+ colored chips in the bag you can use to push your luck.

4 potions used during the game. For each of the first three, the re-pull was of the same (or a duplicate) tile - a 1-white. Then they were refilled - two rubies shot for no joy each time - wasted. When Nikki used the last potion of the game to replace a 1-white, she pulled a 3-white to replace it. I never use the potion more than once (no refilling it); the two-ruby cost to replenish it is too high for what you get in return. Remember, by the time your bag gets to the point where you want to use your potion, your bag is already in pretty bad shape. Those of you who think that it was just bad luck on the players' part can explain to me why using a potion turned out badly all four times!

We just got this as a gift. We are serious gamers… all types of board games. A minor change we made was not limiting the number of chips you can buy. We have a few options on this. With more than two players you need to limit the purchases to different colors or no more than two duplicates colors per turn. Try that - it plays much better. More action = more fun = more opportunities and approaches on a turn by turn basis. BTW the BLUEs are HOT.

Nice video, this convinced me to buy the game, so far I've only played two games, one on each side of the player board, the side with the test tubes is definitely better, it's nice to have the choice of which droplet you want to move, and getting rewards for moving the test tubes feels better then just moving one space on the cauldron, the rat tails do that anyway

I agree with a lot of the runaway leader concerns, but I also think there's a lot of options for other tactics not used by any of them. They seemed to really under value purple for example. Plus maybe some of those more advanced versions balance the game better and these simpler ones are just to start you off on the game without being complicated at the sacrifice of less balance.

Thanks for the great video! It looks fun but seems like it would turn a lot on early luck - if you draw well in the early rounds then you can get ahead, buy better things and move further ahead, rinse and repeat. Nikki seemed to get screwed by her draw in the early rounds and by then it's too late for good bag building to drag you back to the early leader.

    Because I love analysing things:
In the absence of other effects, adding a pair of 1s to the bag has the same effect on your expected total as adding a single 2 - when it comes to going bust, all that matters is the white chips - before the extra white is added later, you're usually going to bust when you draw the 5th of the 7 white chips (only 3,2,2,1 busts with 4 chips, while 6 white chips will always bust - at least until you get the 5th 1 added, when 2,1,1,1,1,1 is safe), so, on average, you'll draw about 5/8 of the other chips (the 7 white draws divide the other chips into 8 "buckets", of which you can draw the first 5) if you draw until you bust - so you'll draw 5/8 of the total points of those chips, which is the same total no matter how many chips its divided between.
On the other hand, if you have the same points across fewer chips, you're going to see more variation in what you draw - to make the modelling easier, suppose you always stopped after your fourth white chip - on average you'd draw half the non-white chips. If you have eight non-white 1 chips, then on average you'd draw four of them for 4 points, which happens 27% of the time, with 3-5 points happening 71% of the time. Getting 0-1 or 7-8 would happen 3.5% of the time each. If you had two non-white 4 chips, then you'd again get 4 points on average, happening 50% of the time, but you have a 25% chance each of getting 0 or 8 points from them. So breaking your chips into smaller pieces gives you a more consistent draw, while combining them into larger chunks gives you a better chance of getting a great (or a terrible) draw. Since you're not always automatically stopping at 4 white chips, but can choose when to push, having more variability is going to be marginally in your favour.
Of course, you also need to consider the effects of the chips. While a useful 1 chip and a pumpkin isn't usually going to be better than the equivalent 2 chip, a lot of the time the 2 chip is less than twice as good as the matching 1 chip - for example, the spiders give you more chances of having one among your last two chips played, the more their points are spread across multiple chips. Two blue 1 chips lets you draw the same number of extra chips as a single 2 chip does, but allows you to play both the extras rather than at most one. And so on.
Of course, the prices of the chips also reflect that - and the rules prevent you from actually choosing to buy two blue 1s rather than a blue 2 - so it's all a bit more complicated to actually break down - but it's definitely not the case that "diluting the whites" makes buying two 1s better than buying a single 2 - the main difference comes in getting two effects rather than a single, less than twice as powerful, effect.

Yeah...It really doesn't suprise that this was the outcome of the game. Getting a free ten dollar chip in the second round is just way too much to overcome. Towards the end of the game, that event would work or if Nikki had realized the gravity of that card. In a two player game that would have been okay as you are pushing your luck and pay the penalty, but this put both Mark and Dave at a severe dissadvantage from round two due to another players luck pushing. I would actually be okay with it if everyone got a chip for you busting, but this was an extremely unbalanced event.

Sadly, this one wasn't much fun to watch. I'm always rooting for Nikki and the opening was just miserable. Despite the efforts to prevent a runaway leader, this game really suffered from one player having such a strong start. The powerful free chip Lincoln got was obvious, but he also had that black to reward him again and again early. And obviously, it is not Lincoln's fault for being lucky, but knowing who is going to win 20 minutes into the game is not great. Love you guys regardless.

    • @danlewis1885
      @danlewis1885 2 года назад +1

The "free" chip Lincoln got was caused by a mistake of another player, Nikki should have never blown up her pot knowing what would happen if she did. Lincoln knowing the power of that black chip compared to the other ingredients was simply better game play. When using Tab 1 of the ingredient cards (beginner level) like they were doing, the black is the most powerful color ingredient. Consistently advancing your drop and getting a ruby is huge compared to what you get from the other ingredients. Of course, you have to be lucky to keep drawing black chips every round. Based on how Lincoln corrected Dave on rules errors/oversights, I'd say he had already played the game a few times before the vid.

If there are 3 or more pumpkins already placed, you can place it two steps further. Correct me if I'm wrong, that's what it looked like on the video. :)

"The Quacks of Quedlinburg" is indeed the name we have chosen! You can just call it "Quacks" for short. That's what we call it in the office.

This really put me off the game. It looks like it suffers from a major problem of runaway leader. Lincoln getting the free level 2 early in the game was a major advantage that the others couldn't catch up with. The card itself is ridiculously overpowered but it also serves to exacerbate a problem the game already has.

Jamie Murphy Runaway leader, luckfest. Perfect candidate for the Spiel du Jour, the most overrated board game award!

Maybe Nikki shouldn't have blown up her pot knowing that Lincoln would get a free 2-chip. Her blunder gave him the advantage he should have never gotten. Things like that help you learn how to play better so there's less likely to be a runaway leader.

3:34 - argh, the editing! Show me what Dave is talking about! ;-)

This video is more of a hindrance, than help. Surely Dave should have a good grasp of the gameplay before trying to teach others how to play it? As he says, his tutorial is all over the place and he completely gets things wrong, then has to be corrected. Not ideal. To end on a positive, it seems like a lovely playgroup. Lincoln, reminds me of a friend who is the best gamer in our playgroup and instantly "gets" the mechanics of a game engine.

We watched it before playing and it was a great help. Having two people who know the mechanics and having one correct accidental errors/oversights is a good thing.

This game is very monotonous and mostly luck. Ugh

    • @danlewis1885
      @danlewis1885 2 года назад

There is a lot of luck involved in drawing the tiles. HOWEVER, there's also risk/reward management and properly buying ingredients to maximize points, which is not luck.

What a terrible choice of colors for players. They're all a little similar.

Felipe, this was the first German printing of the game. They changed the player colors to standard colors in subsequent printings of the game. Thanks for the note and for watching.-Lincoln
