When I told my TaeKwonDo teacher I started learning Korean the literal first thing he said was "WHY!??!? Why would you do that??" And I said "To spy on you of course!" He laughed, I laughed, we laughed, and then he punched me in the gut.

As an active duty soldier, I was married to a Korean woman for 15 1/2 years (1978-1995). I could read and write 한글 but only knew the basic salutations and how to count and tell time. I could communicate from point A to B on the buses and felt my Korean was much better than most other American soldiers married to Koreans; although I only spoke in the present tense. I barely finished H.S. in 1974 with what nowadays would amount to an 8th grade education level, so understanding grammar rules and conjugation was far beyond my comprehension level. I never knew any Korean woman who taught their children Korean (unlike the German wives) or wanted their children to study Korean.
Today, I have a MAT and am a 63 year old retired school teacher. I began seriously re-studying Korean two years ago. I am using Billy's books (Book 2, Chapt 3) along with TTMIK (Level 3). I truly wish I had not wasted so many academic years. Good luck to everyone on their Korean journey.

I've been learning Korean for 2 years now, and I got kinda shameful to say it out loud because everytime I share it with someone. Ppl come at me : oh! You're a kpop fan! For sure, you only learn Korean cuz u like kpop.
And especially on RUclips, when someone is learning Korean and is also a kpop fan, ppl come at them saying : koreaboo!
Well,,, no ?? Pls, ppl need to change their minds

I feel shameful because I have been learning Korean for 4 years now, and I'm indeed a k-pop fan, but I am not learning it for my favorite bands or whatever. It'd be nice to know the lyrics and understand them without translation, but that's not my reason. I've been surrounded by Koreans my whole life, when I was 7 I met a boy named Jin and he told me about his family and taught me my first word(s) and hangul. The language is tied to me. I just hate that the people I tell that I speak Korean always call me a koreaboo, which isn't true. I already get looked at weird for enjoying Korea's music, it's already bad, but saying I am learning it and I get told all the awful things.....ugh sorry it just bothers me. Why can't I be both?

i was on vrchat (a vr game where you can meet people in virtual worlds) and i often go to a korean world to practice listening or speaking. a few days ago, i met someone who's a new learner and we had a good discussion about why we were interested in korean.
now, in the middle of our convo, some guy came up to us and asked what we, english speakers, were doing in a korean-based world. he immediately assumed that we were koreaboos! the girl i was talking to explained that her friend wanted her to learn it, but i was hesitant to be judged because my reason was kpop. he didnt change his mind even when we tried telling him what koreaboos really are.
i even posed the question: "if an english native speaker were to want to learn spanish, would they be a 'spainaboo' or something like that??"
he said "no..." so i replied, "right, because its normalized."
i shoulda said to him "you're just scared to admit that you're in the wrong" LOL

4 years late to respond. But I relate to this so much!!! I'm very hesitant to tell people I'm learning korean because most people know I'm a huge kpop fan, but actually my reasoning for learning has nothing to do with that. I was a kpop fan for 5 years before I started learning Korean. You'd think if I was doing it for that I'd have started at my peak of being a fan.

The discouragement from learning Korean is less from Koreans than from other foreigners who live here. They don't like that you're learning it because it makes them feel self conscious about being here for ages without studying.

In my experience foreigners who live in Korea that don't learn Korean just don't talk about it at all, because they'll get called out on it. The only times I've had someone say that Korean isn't useful, is from Koreans themselves. Generally they compare it to like German, which has ~120 million speakers, or something like that. When I talk to Americans in America about it, the most I've gotten is "why Korean over X?", but not really any discouragement.

I want to be able to speak with my grandma in her native language and make her proud. I just wish it wasn't so late in the game. I'm starting at 22, but hopefully in due time I can achieve fluency. And maybe even inspire my cousins to follow my lead.

I started to learn Korean because of Drama and wanting to understand without having to read subtitles. But the more I learned the more I feel in love with the culture, the people, the country... So the reason I started was right, but then it changed. Also about politeness level. When I started I didn't give a hoot, but in that year I have been learning I started to change in that regard as well. When someone younger than me (and speaks Korean with me) uses 반말 I get do feel offended. I actually decided when I started to first learn 존댓말 and later add 반말 when I get more secure with it, but at some point it started to mix. When I got to know my first Korean friend, she made sure to ask for my age and insisted on me using 존댓말 with her to get used to it, because it is better to be too polite than to offend by being rude.

The reason why I learn Korean is:
Short answer: I have the right to understand what I listen to and watch.
Long answer: 1. I grew up listening to Backstreet boys, Westlife, Nsync, Boyzone...etc and once that lovely era of the 90s and the millennium ended, those singers were replaced with the new modern English songs which don't appeal to me. Not wanting to disrespect anyone, but I'm not listening to songs like "anaconda", nor would like to watch a naked woman singing in a "video clip" 🙄. This is just not my cup of tea. K.pop is much cleaner and it is fun to watch people dance than watching them strip 🤷‍♀️. I still listen to English songs as long as they are audible though.
    2. Korean variety shows are sooo funny, creative and entertaining and takes a lot of time to get subbed, if they get subbed at all, and I like to laugh every now and then, you know, like normal humans.
    3. Korean drama are much shorter and less smutty than American drama ,my own opinion, that's why I enjoy watching them.
So I learn Korean to understand what I listen to and watch, why is this considered a crime, while I see some Americans try to learn French and Spanish, and everyone consider this as cool, but Korean language isn't cool to learn, double standards.

I am 100% on the same trail!! I was motivated to learn English to understand BSB among others and Friends without reading subs (plus to be on the teachers good side because she was kind of terrifying) but then I missed learning a language in adulthood so I had to pick one and I looked at the kpop songs I was already listening to and went "Yeah, I'd like to understand these lyrics.. why not let's use the same motivation that worked once before" and with that I just fell in love with Korean deeper and deeper both as a language but also so many channels of entertainment, history and much else! I love their shows too like gag consert and running man! I'd love to learn languages for life but Korean was picked because it just happens that I miss boybands and good music you want to dance to without annoying nakedness and I think it's a great bonus when you actually understand and can sing along! Like the good old times :p
Also I don't get why it's shunned to like a group because they look good.. it's how I liked boybands growing up as well. *shrug*

Me as well. I learn English when I was 14 for backstreet boys and the others and cause I wanted to understand movies without needing subtitles. In 2006 I moved to Greece and slowly I stop listening English music, for the same reasons you wrote . Greek music wasn't my cup of tea, cause their modern stuff is slutty too. I already liked Ost's from anime so I was inclined to try to learn japanese, but one day I watched a korean movie called "baby and I" and the sound of korean fascinated me.
I started watching korean movies and dramas, their Ost took me to their music, and I discovered several artist wich I enjoyed some songs but that was it. Until 2012 when I felt in love with exo.
Even like this, I never put time into learning the language, but I decided to start now. I dont care what anyone around me tell me or call me. I am going to learn korean cause I love that language. Their Writing system, their sounds and all. Even if I never going to be able to visit Korea, I am going to learn korean.
I even thought to make a RUclips channel showing my progress on it. Do you think is a good idea?

After a lot of research I decided Chinese and Japanese were too heard to learn to read and write and settled on Korean. Now I live in Korea and it annoys me that everyone assumes I am learning Korean because of kpop or kdramas. I've also had a lot of people (foreigners) question why I'm learning because I'm in Seoul and they could visit for a couple of weeks and use only English. In 서울 I went to language exchanges about 3-4 nights a week for months, so I had a LOT of initial conversations with Koreans. A lot of these misconceptions are dead on, particularly the trope about wanting to learn for Korean girls, and spicy food. Actually the "oh wow you can handle spicy food" thing was starting to get more than a bit annoying. The other trope I found annoying was "you're living in Korea, so that must be why your spoken ability has improved". Yeah, that, and not the fact I consciously practiced and dedicated time to language exchanges.
One thing related to the 반말 trope is I've had Koreans straight up just speak 반말 with me immediately, without even acknowledging it when I first met them. No respekk.
I didn't really come across the genius one but I can agree with how it removes agency from you and it removes all the work you had to do in order to reach an intermediate+ level of Korean.
Also every single couple that I met with a bilingual Korean partner, the foreign partner almost NEVER learned Korean. I lived in 세종시 and I knew several people who had been there for years and hadn't learned anything. In 부산 I met the owner of a brewing company and restaurant there who had been there almost ~10 years and hadn't learned much at all. I think it's extremely difficult to have your romantic partner also be your teacher, and most people don't have the drive to go out and find a teacher or school.

I think the worst part is that misconceptions 1 and 3 were actually right about me. Initially, at least. But it evolved to a point where I'd actually have to put in work and effort, and that, in turn, deepened my appreciation for the language, and now I just want to know it for me. Plus, I'd like to visit, and I don't want to be *that guy* who just points at everything or be reduced to charades without a local who can speak English and Korean.
But no, you nailed it. No matter why you start out learning it, no one is going to learn it for a simple reason. You eventually just have a desire to learn that goes beyond that initial catalyst.

Ngl I started learning Korean bc of their media, like watching korean dramas without subtitles ofc (although that doesn't seem really necessary but i wanna appreciate the acting without having to miss it bc of subs), but most specifically to be able to read manhwas and webtoons that aren't licensed in english or to be able to engage with celebrities. i know it's a very lame reason to learn a language but I tell myself that stimulating my brain learning a new skill regardless if it'll be useful or not in the future, is much more better than just sitting around and wasting hours on youtube like i often do for example. I also struggle studying for my major, but learning smth that you actually enjoy on your free time and learning how to study with it, and then applying those methods when actually studying for your major isn't useless imo.

One's reason for learning something shouldn't be looked down upon no matter what it is. Some people wish to understand song lyrics, and some want to talk to people in another language.

I wanted to try learning a language with a different writing system... I originally chose Thai bc I was already watching Thai dramas so I was like that'll work and once I get a grasp on it I won't have to read subtitles! (I'm a sloooow reader).. as a first forgein language Thai is a bit much. it's like a math equation trying to figure out which tone to use for any given word, and there are not many free learning materials online ( I wanted to wait before I invested all my money into the language). The actual writing system is really hard to memorize as well. After about a month of trying to sort out Thai letters I found out about 한글 and all of its cool features to make learning it pain free. I was instantly sold.. I then had a moment of internal debate that started with "What the hell am I gonna use korean for?" This is a long story to say I started getting into K-pop to have at least some semblance of an excuse to learn Korean.. only after did I find a bunch of people shaming the concept of learning a language bc they like the media. Why? Who cares? I have an actual facination with learning the new grammar, and I wouldn't have known that otherwise.. I'm planning on hopefully going back to Thai one day, and learning about all of its fun grammar quirks. For people to shame others for learning a language for reasons they don't think are good enough is just plain rude in my eyes. Let people do what they want!

Kia Ora Andy from a fellow New Zealander :) I was so surprised to hear that familiar accent lol. I am learning Korean because I married a Korean man :) It was quite a few years ago now and at a time when Korean language resources were few in NZ and because we aren't living in Korea, he didn't see it as necessary to teach me or our children much of his language. But I kept dabbling with what I could find and then I stumbled across TTMIK. I am older now and will probably never arrive at a great level of fluency but I enjoy the challenge of learning :) Also learning the language, watching Korean dramas, variety shows, etc, has helped me to understand the culture and history more and so therefore understand my husband more, his attitudes and mannerisms, etc. I just wish I'd had access to all these things earlier in our lives:)

한글 is the reason I'm learning Korean. It's just really simply and really easy to learn and the way it's put together is just really interesting to me. Seeing that there weren't many characters in 한글 made me really want to learn Korean having already wanted to learn a foreign language at the time.

On the reason for learning in my case, I definitely do enjoy korean media, but I am also (as a german) really fascinated by the culture and the language itself. Because the german language is known for being harsh and rough sounding, I absolutely love the way korean sounds.💜

As I think about it the things I've realized is that my reasoning now versus then isn't so based in watching dramas or kpop. At the moment I'm in a lull period with Korean due to my Japanese learning journey. Maybe one day I'll get back to Korean. But this was definitely a video that makes me think.

That's true tho sure I was Introduced to Korean language and capture because I found kpop but that's not the reason I'm trying to learn it *only like 8% the reason but not the main reason more of a side dish of a reason I guess you could say* but I'm learning it because I have a passion for learning languages and I find the Korean language EXTREMELY diffrent even beatiful in a way but also more of a challenge for me but also it's just cool being able to read a foriegn alphabet plus knowing more languages is a good opportunity to make freinds and learn new things I've always been a curious person very intrested in learning about calture very different from what I'm used to my language learning list is quite large but kpop and kdramas are not #1 reason for learning but because I wanna learn many language and visit alot of places I just personally enjoy learning new things I'm also learning Spanish swedish and real German *I speak a German dialect called low German so I wanna learn what we call high German or real german not the dialect * I also plan to start learning Japanese and brush up and improve on my French
Which means by the time I know all the languages I want to know I'll be able to speak
    English
    Low German
    German
    Swedish
    Spanish
    French
    Korean
    Japanese
And the list might grow as well
So it's not just because of kpop

Nice chat! Would a breuvage labeled 에이드 every be carbonated or alcoholic, or is it more exclusive to juice?
... definitely have felt many of these misconceptions as a negative reaction or if not negative at least an assumption to my Learning, some of these have happened with other languages îve worked on like my partners birth language and via love did not automatically become my teacher and translator and neither of us had much interest in the media . . . so glad to see this pointed out ... people just assume a lot of stuff about the WHY
« korea just kinda choose me 🙌 I would never think learning a language is a waste of time », love it...

I absolutely HATE "omg you like Korea! You must love BTS!" I hate all KPop (I can name one or 2 rock bands I like, I just do not like pop period) or "omg what KDramas do you like?" I don't like KDramas, although I have come to the conclusion that until I live in Korea (working towards) I should watch for listening practice, though I'm at a "well, I don't enjoy so how the hell do I pick one?" Or my total fav, I LOVE Japanese culture and being told "that Japanese guy looks like he's from BTS" or the time I was in Japan for a rock concert and a girl in my dorm at the hostel was there for some KPop (I believe BTS but I might be wrong) and she found I was in Japan for a concert and she's like "I'M GOING TO BTS TOO!" (bc no other bands exist) then she got super mad it wasn't them. I love both countries and I HATE people equating them

At first I wanted to learn Korean because of a video game;;;; later on I found more reasons of course but that was my motivation. Later on I was called a cringy kpop fan and a koreaboo and I Had no idea what kpop is. I don't even like anything besides shinee and stray kids nowadays. I find bts annoying and overrated... I hate to be called such stuff because I don't even like it. Guess it's just me? :/
