About Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
As the world fell, young Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

Not sure about that. If you look again while he's filling the bucket, the pistol was just hanging in his belt without holster.
@wilcals5294 "drawn" is probably the wrong word to use. It's more like, "Yeah, I'm aiming my gun at you. Question me again, huh?" type of deal.

Two flamethrowers aimed towards the only road going in and out surrounded by a lake of oil. I think that's the Wasteland equivalent of "fuck around and find out".
That’s actually not oil. It’s supposed to be a bog composed of various waste and refuse from both the people living in gas town and the gas refining process itself
@@Scantredle it's still flamable as fuck.
Still flammable lmao
I think the reason why Dementus f**ked up in this scene is he used specifically people loyal to Octoboss, and who he cared for. Had he used other people loyal to him, Octoboss would've still not liked it, but wouldn't have left him since Octoboss wouldn't have lost any boys.
I wonder if it was intentional, though. Based on the interaction with the Mortiflyer, they seem to be a semi-independent group within the horde; and based on the War Rig fight they seem one of the most effective fighting units in the Wasteland; and the Octoboss also acts closer to a colleague than a subordinate at points. All of this suggests that theoretically, regardless how useful he is, the Octoboss is also the closest to a potential rival authority in the horde. Thus, while ideally Dementus would probably have preferred taking Gastown with the initial Trojan Horse ploy, by making sure the Mortiflyers would be the ones to take the hits if forced to "make it real" (while his own most loyal troops are safe inside) he can whittle down his rivals strength a bit while maintaining a certain deniability.
He's demented.
Octoboss (the devil guy) is by far my favourite when it comes to character design.
Same here he looks like a post Apocalyptic version of Baphomet
I love how aggressively Dementus is smearing the white clay on the underling biker hahaha.

Dementus has many forms though, Red Dementus is just one of them.

@@te9591I think the guy in all black is homenage to Locki. With the horns
When things go bonkers...you have to adapt
I like that Dementus is a new kind of villain in that he's not nearly as competent as Immortan Joe; he fails frequently and is out of control for large portions of the movie but he's equally as cruel because of what's been done to him and out of fear of losing his leadership and position; he's arguably more volatile and dangerous than a colder and more competent villain would be. Excellent work by Miller and Hemsworth both.
I really enjoyed this about the movie too. It was really cool to see the different dynamics between the two factions. Not only is Immortan Joe more competent, his court is more developed, his men are entirely belonging to him, they are entirely devoted, and he not only has an infrastructure in place- but also has his eyes on the future in obtaining an heir to carry on Immortan's rule. Dementus' on the other hand had an inner circle consisting of smaller leaders, the horde was not entirely his own, besides scavenging and looting- they had no reliable means of obtaining resources. He is not concerned about an heir (the future) in the same way Joe is, and that reflects on Dementus' character.
@@Malthius The reason why Dementus doesnt care about an heir is because he already had children and they were killed most likely in front of his eyes and who knows in how brutal ways. He is dead inside because of it as he says to Furiosa at the end of the movie. Thats why he carries the teddy bear with him all the time and its the only thing in his possession he seems to really care about.
@@Malthius Perhaps Immortan Joe was once like Dementus. Maybe we're seeing Immortan Joe's early climb via the actions of Dementus. You learn how to handle yourself and others as you move through life. Baby steps, etc.
This movie was utterly brilliant as an addition to the universe. He is a very good portrayal of a psychopath, but in an entertaining manner.
Fun Fact:
The man at 1:56 pumping gas is played by none other than Craig Hemsworth, the father of Chris Hemsworth!
Actually, his dad was one of the bikers with the dog from MX 1.
This scene highlights that although Dementus is a deceptively clever soldier and tactician, he is an abysmal leader because he is willing to sacrifice the lives of his men on a whim for the sake of a plan. No wonder the Octoboss left.
Edit: As several commenters pointed out. Sometimes leaders have to make sacrifices in order to achieve victory, that is no different in the setting of Mad Max even if Dementus is still considered scum by other warlords for his tactics. However I want to make a different point in that while Dementus excels at things like subterfuge and warfare like what is seen in the video and is an efficient soldier when it comes to wasteland survival when it comes to actually managing what he conquers he falls short. This is best seen when we see him later when he is the Mayor of Gastown and things went very poorly there with the people he's ruling over revolting against him. In short, he can command a biker horde but utterly fails at governing a wasteland society not centered around violence.
You need to build the right story for your group. The Imortan could easily send his war boys into certain death because they had this Valhalla cult.
There's no success without a sacrifice. Especially in the war
What a dumb take.
Are you saying a great leader would instead tell everyone "ok boys, the ruse is up, turn around and go home"?
He had to make a quick and tough call and sacrifice a few lives for the greater good of many.
Except they weren't his
Maybe but this gained them gas town. In the wasteland having an asset like that will save many more lives. Plenty of gas for themselves and for trading for food/water. Many of them probably just die otherwise without it. I honestly have no idea how that huge horde survives long without a place like gas town to help.
So the first mayor of Gastown was Mad Marx.
Lmao!
Very good.
It was shocking to see how cultured and competent the Gas Baron was, even had a fully functional telephone system.
It's too bad this movie didn't do well in theatres. It was great.

Dementus right hand biker "The Octoboss", he reminds me a lot of the 1979 Mad Max character, Toecutter's second in command "Bubba Zanetti". Both characters are quite similar, not because their black biker outfits, but their characteristic behaviors are almost the same thing.
I found Dementus and Octoboss parallelling Max and Gyro captain. Max and D have both tragic past and have dog companions. Octoboss and Gryo both fly and have similar facial features. And their relationship is shaped by a oil producing fortress. Max and Gyro become friendly allies while D and Octoboss become enemies.

Dementus is the Joker of the Mad Max universe. Simply chaotic and unpredictable.
Yeah, I categorized him as chaotic evil, while Immortan is more lawful evil.
@SmeagolTheGreat decent analogies, however youll notice that Dementus is not a statutory rapist like Joe, and that he treats a child in his company better than some of his rabble.
It's not like he did it just for kicks, it was brutal but served a strategic purpose...
Dementus is the most cynical human being i have ever seen. Maybe only Obama is more so.
I really wish this movie didn't flop
I wouldn't call it a flop. It's slowly making money, it's already made back into what was put in. Mad max movies never really make a lot of money. But hopefully it'll make a little more, so that we can see another Mad Max film. But I do think it's a good film.
No it hasn't lol. If a movie costs 200 million budget you add another 150 million for marketing. Then theaters take half of all sales so the break even is 700 million. That means the movie needs to gross over 700 million in theater sales to make a profit. This movie was pulled from theaters after 2 weeks. Even on a 100 million budget it can never make its money back. Streaming won't make the money needed and the online sales have been dismal.
Didn't both Bladerunner movies flip despite critical acclaim? But slowly clawed back money over the years then Amazon come along with their big pockets and commission a series?
@@dontcare7086 From what I have seen and heard Furiosa has topped several streaming platforms and originally it stalled at the box office, but the rumours pan out taht it has actually made back just over what was its production cost. According to the numbers...

I like how they cuddle the puppies. Even the organic mechanic does. He cooked one of the dogs though in the last parts of the movie but Im thinking it must have died during the war.
I felt that Dementus was supposed to mirror Genghis Khan or Attila the Hun, ruthless and skilled generals leading vast hordes but no one ever talks about Attila or Genghis as administrators, because they weren't, they knew how to conquer but not to rule. Same with Dementus.
Yeah, Dementus and his Biker Horde is actually a surprisingly accurate depiction of steppe hordes. Not so much a single unified army so much as a confederation of groups with varying levels of loyalty to a central overlord.
If anything the least accurate part is how most of his horde sticks around until the end. In real life, most of the horde would bail at the first sign of weakness.
Gengis did know how to administrate and his empire survived him by 200 years. Dementus is basically Attila

I was thinking that exact same thing watching this clip, everything is too clean and shiny, and lacks that sense of true scrapyard construction.
We probably not crazy then.
I agree. It looks like the fucking desk drive sketch from Late night with Conan O'Brien.
This scene was definitely inspired by the second mad max film.
Wow, they employed the Trojan Horse.
A timetested battle arrangement that's never been done before in the history of humanity.
Imagine if Gastown was SMART ENOUGH to only allow a truck to pass to the second gate after it was fully inspected in that middle area?
How could they be this dumb?
Well, for starters, they probably are dumb. Not everyone is a tactician in the wasteland, especially if Joe's brother is focused on his bachelor pad painting.
But you're also being a bit too harsh. They think their war brothers/friends are about to die. Obviously they're going to let them in immediately.
It’s not exactly like the tales of Homer survived to post apocalypse, they barely made it to modern day.
Not enough room/resources to make a second gate setup? Or the second gate might have been hit by a war rig that couldn't slow down well enough.
Still, a section of loose sand for War Rigs to bottom out in might help. Similar to the runaway truck ramps we have today on interstate downhill slopes.
I think they’re more worried about losing the war rig. That is more valuable than its crew, and better to risk a few fake warboys getting inside where an army of guards could deal with them than keeping the gates shut and letting Immortan’s war rig stay in enemy hands.
The problem was that Dementus hid soldiers in the tanker itself, and the fake war boys probably kept around the truck and didn’t act suspicious while the commandos did their work.
Dazzling spectacle of a saga for sure
Damn the CGI in this one is horrible compared to the first one.
Question my boss-thority will you?
Hemsworth killed it. Anna Taylor Joy was perfect. I honestly DON'T understand what problems people had with this film? Just because a girl was the lead role all the super insecure wanna be alpha males decided it couldn't be a good movie. Damn shame because this was a GREAT film.
I like the Octoboss, even though he's a bad guy...and killed Furiosa's mom, of course. He has a way more level head than Dementus, which in this world both doesn't mean much but still DOES at the same time. It's like, what brand of psychopath are you willing to work with? lol. Someone more impulsive and likely to make a LOT of fucking costly mistakes like Dementus, or someone who is cold, calculating, and would rather sit back and evaluate plan before going in?
