  • Since 2014, Sony has had a number of really innovative cameras in their lineup. but which one deserves the credit for being the most innovative? Which one moved the needle further than the others and helped photographers improve their work the most? This is the question that I hope to answer in this video.

For me the A1 for the incredible 50MP sensor best in class sensor for best image quality possible... However, the A9 III w/ global shutter is a incredible tech that is more of a game changer in the grand scheme of things... Great video Patrick!

in early 2015, I purchased an A7II for my wife, getting her a full frame in place of her A65, a few weeks later we shot a wedding together and I had an A77 MII and an A99. Later that evening my wife came up to me and showed me a shot of kids dancing being lit only by some rope lights, she shot it at ISO 10,000. I was stunned as my A99 would only get good shots under ISO 2500. Later that night as I copied images onto my computer, I kept looking at her A7II and what it did with high ISO files, and how much smaller and lighter it was than my DSLR sized A99. I made the decision that night to move from my Sony SLT cameras and lenses to the pretty new mirrorless line.

My experience was much the same. I had two A99II bodies and had just bought them when I got early access the the A9 in Jan. of 2017. Needless to say, I was selling my A mount gear as fast as I could before that March. I still miss the great feel of the a99II with the grip attached. I think it was the best feel of any camera I've ever used...

I could argue that the Sony NEX-3, which I bought in April of 2011 was the game changer. I sold my Leica M9 and switched to mirrorless. Then in December 2013, when Sony came out with the A7R, I sold my Nikon D810 and entire DSLR gear and switched to mirrorless exclusively, since I thought this was the future, and the DSLR was finished as a camera paradigm.
I could also argue that the first “One Megapixel” Kodak DC-260 camera in 2000 or the 6 MP Nikon D100 in 2002 that persuaded me to sell my film cameras and switch to digital, were game-changers.
So how far back in time do you want to go? Maybe William Shockley who won the Nobel Prize in 1956 for inventing the transistor which got the electronics revolution going? Or Oscar Barnack who in 1913 created 35mm photography? Were they any less of game changers?!

Whoa Roy!!!! My question was Sony camera specific, though you make excellent points. You also make a good point about the NX-3, which was even smaller and lighter than the A6000.

    • @royprasad

@@PMRTV - I bought my NEX-3 in the first week of April 10, 2011. The guy in the store tried to sell me the other mirrorless camera that was on the market at that time, an Olympus 4/3rds.
But I figured Sony was the horse to bet on, because not only the sensor on the NEX-3 was APS-C, but looking at the cavity and the flange size, I guessed Sony might be able to squeeze in a full-size 35mm sensor in there one day, and that turned out to be a good guess.
By getting rid of the SLR box, Sony had done something impressive: I no longer had to apply autofocus trim factors to each of my Nikon lenses to offset AF errors. I thought that was a paradigm changer. I could also buy an adapter to use my Leica M lenses with the NEX-3, which meant I could sell my Leica M9 and say goodbye to the rangefinder. To me, the NEX-3 was a huge quantum leap that put mirrorless into outer space.
All the subsequent models - A7R, A7S, A9, A1, A9 III, etc. were designs that pushed mirrorless into higher orbits, but the epochal Sony camera that achieved the escape velocity for the first time was the NEX-3, IMHO... Cheers.

I guess the original A9 was a game changer, and it took 4 years for other companies to produce something similar, and now the A9III is creating a new paradigm.

I agree that Sony is killing the Dinasaurs. But they seem to have left behind one of their best cameras The RX10 serices, I purchased the RX10 IV in addition to my full frame cameras. It is to me the most innovative camera that Sony ever made for non professional photographers. When traveling on vacation with friends and Family I give it to others on the trip to use and they are amazed at the photos they can get with the camera. All other them feel that they cot better photos with it than they could ever get with their iPhones.
I am surprised that SONY has failed to continue the innovation with more advancements in one of the best travel cameras ever made.

Looking to get back into photography after a decade of working non photo-related jobs, I saw the a6000 on display. Thinking all the talk about Leica, here was a little Sony Leica like rangefinder style camera that was tiny and cute at the same time. I tried the bigger Nikons and Canons and almost vomited. I spent years shooting the Nikon F2 and FE2, both heavy and heavier with motor drives attached. This was a game changer and no one noticed. I have graduated to the a6700, which I compared to the A74 and A7R3 and find it to be the most fun camera to use. Now we see other manufacturers doing the same, coming out with their versions of a rangefinder like camera that is small and lightweight. I think Sony was on to something brilliant. Now we see the A7C series and new lenses that are smaller and lighter. I think smaller is the buzz word.

@@PMRTVin interested if you think the A6000 would be a good start if you were getting into shooting portraits/events on a low budget to start with over say a used full frame DSLR like Nikon D610 or a Canon equivalent.
I think my only concern would be the single card slot ?

@@PMRTV I have the A7CR I call the magic camera. It's full frame, it's aps-c. It's also expensive, but I love it. I considered the A7R5 but after lugging around my A7R3, and I love my a6700 for it daintiness, I went with the CR. But what I have discovered is that all those pixels don't matter as much as we want to believe they do. I have shot cameras since the 1970s, worked as a photographer, writer and editor of military base newspapers, attended journalism school at Ft. Benjamin Harrison long ago. It taught me a lot about how to shoot photos. When you know, you can make an aps-c shine and look better than FF camera. It's the user, the one in control who can maximize the features in a camera.

For me, it was also the A6000. I was a Minolta user, and intrigued by Sony and the mirrorless advance, but was not impressed with the line of NEX cameras. Before a trip to Cuba, I bought a 6000. I saw its specs and thought "Sony has now hit a home run" . I could use two Leica summicrons I owned with a Chinese adapter, could use direct mirrorless focus, and avoid the weight, price and size of a DSLR. It's size and format reminded me of the Leica M4. Among those I I traveled with was another photographer, a Canon professional, who kept saying that the A 6000 was a toy - (large size and weight was apparently still the harbinger of professionalism in still photography). My book of photos from that trip has since been commented on by others - can't believe it's been 10 years since I turned to the advantages of mirrorless digital imagery.

great post!!! Those A6000 files really slammed what a quality file was in 2014, I still am horrified when I have to dip into my archive and pull images that I shot with canon... they don't hold a candle to what the A6000 was doing and for just $650 for the body!!!!

I think the A1 is the most versatile. The A9iii has a few issue if shooting landscape or video as far as I can see. I was going to pick a A7RV but as a A7cr owner not sure whether I should wait for the A1ii ? The original A1 although still great is lacking so many features now. Do you still use the A7RV ?
