    Friendly reminder for Mark: In the manga, when they're about to travel into the Grand Line, Zoro says it's impossible to travel up a mountain. The person who rebutts him is Sanji, who says it's entirely possible. At the time, it was thought to be a reference in regards to Zeff's journey and now we realize, oh no, that was actually based off HIS OWN journey.

      @@MrGrimlocke That actually raises an interesting point. I'm kinda with you on that one, but one thing that I don't really like about post-timeskip One Piece, at least when compared to pre-timeskip, is pacing. OH MY GOD, once they leave Fish-Man Island there is NO such thing as a break. It is EXHAUSTING. At least after Alabasta, we had the whole "We miss Vivi!" scene, plus the journey to Jaya to cool off and start a _new_ story off. Here? No fam, we go from HERE to HERE to THERE and WOAH ELEPHANT and OH MY GOD SABO and AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
      STOP, PLEASE. IT'S TOO MUCH. I CAN'T PROPERLY APPRECIATE IT AS I'M READING IT ANYMORE, ODA.
      Don't get me wrong, I love Zou and Whole Cake and Dressrosa (I've barely started Wano) as much as the next guy, and everything they have is magnificent, but I don't have time to digest it before Oda refills my plate with hella-filling food!

I love that Oda was able to set up so many end-game threads with this arc while still managing to introduce so many fan-favorite characters for the first time and create a compelling self contained story for the Minks. I'd like to point out two things: First, the mink race was known for quite some time, since the slave auctions in Sabaody, where you could read the prices for different races, this to me is mindblowing and all praise to Oda's writing. Second, ever since skypiea we knew Sanji was born in the north blue, but then at the grandline as we learned more and more about the world geographics we realised that crossing over from one ocean to the other was not an easy task, we had much foreshadowing as to Sanji's upbringing being a huge deal. And even in Alabasta, his choice of being called Mr. Prince was very telling, we just didn't know anything yet.

We were all on Big Mom after Fishman Island then we spent three arcs, (Punk Hazard, Dressrosa and Zou) building up three samurai and an oncoming battle with Kaido. Just to shoehorn a Big Mom conflict into the mix and Oda is jumping through hoops and plot contrivances just to include her presence in this arc and it is my least favourite part of Wano. And Honestly, it's all because he sent a force insufficient to Whole Cake Island to deal with Big Mom and now has to include the logical course of action for her, which is chasing the Strawhats.
      She, a df user, falls into the ocean and should drown, but because she is such a physical freak I guess, she doesn't drown, just washes up on shore with no help and convenient amnesia (writers' worst plot device), She then acts an ally until Oda is ready yo drop that crap and THEN now Oda has her apparently get knocked out in what could be considered the dumbest way a Yonko could be knocked out. By getting run over by a bike. Overall Wano is fine. I feel it would be a lot better without Oda forcing Big Mom where she doesn't belong. I feel like she's literally only here to reclaim Zeus at some point. Even her crew are being kept at bay with ridiculous plot convenience. First King then Marco kicking them off the top of the waterfall.

    I think Sanji being from the North Blue is my favorite example of a call-back trope in One Piece. It's something that really doesn't seem like a big deal at the time it's revealed to us in Jaya, when we're hearing about the stories of Montblanc Noland. Yet, it should have raised a TON of questions to us at the time, given what we knew about the world. The East and South Blue, together, are isolated from the North and West Blues via the red line. You simply CAN NOT get from one of these pairs of seas to the other pair without either:
    A. going directly through the red line, or
    B. entering the grand line and exiting via the calm belt (In Paradise to get to East/South Blue, or in the New World to get to the West and North blues).
    Sanji was born in the North Blue but was recruited in the East Blue. How in the world did he get there? This should have been a question on our minds 550 chapters ago.

    Mark: The upcoming arcs are some of the ones I've been most excited to see you review and I'm honestly getting sad that you're only a handful of reviews away before you're caught up. These videos were honestly the highlight of the pandemic for me and was often the only source of joy or even just content my brain would let me experience. Thank you for this series, I sincerely love them.
    I hope you enjoy the upcoming arcs as much as I do! Whole Cake has all the feels -- highs AND lows and just so much more character development than you'd expect. Reverie, as short as it is, is full of so much joy and lore and brings so many questions but is also SO satisfying. And then WANO. Wano is truly one of thee greatest peaks in One Piece, if not the greatest. It's so, so good and amazing and enjoyable. And when you get to it, there's a stringed instrument (*called the Shamisen) that is played relatively often, especially in the first act, so just make sure to have your editor send you a clip of it, it just really helps immerse yourself into the arc and it's also just really pleasant to listen to!
    Editor: Thanks so much for your work on this series! Especially with all you do to make sure Mark isn't spoiled but to also leave hints and jokes for those of us who are more caught up. You're a delight and this series wouldn't be the same without you. Thank you so much!

It's the kind of thing once you're being told of or see it for yourself make you re read the manga carefully scanning each page, panels little details to see what the author may hint for futur event or just being here to make the island believable, to see that they have an history prior to the strawhat coming.

      It's actually very acurate. The entire structure of one Piece that works so well is absed on the premise that the Strawhats arn't really 'players' in the smaller or bigger socio-political events of the story but they usually tend to 'happen' to teh story and set in motion events that have often been stalemated or endured for a long time, in turn pushing all other factions to start making moves as well in reaction to the chaos Luffy is causing! Best example the current arc.
      the only real arc I can think of where they get drawn into ongoing events instead of being the impetus is Alabasta. Each other time it's the Strawhats themselve taht really kickstart the events of an arc :-)

    I will never forget the gratification i felt when all of the "Sanji is from north blue royalty/assassins" theory turned out not just to be a crack theory. Of course, assassin royalty is not exactly what he is, but it was close enough for me to leap out of my seat and shout profanities.

    • @FJLink
      @FJLink 4 года назад +1

      Wait, did we know anything about the north blue besides noland at this point? You could compare it to the east blue and assume it was a fiercer sea, but i don't remember any tease for the vinsmokes.

    • @ventusleone
      @ventusleone 4 года назад +2

      FJLink There is nothing about the Vinsmokes in particular, but Sanji briefly mentions that he grew up in North blue. The theory of “Sanji is a assasin-prince” theory came about because of Sanjís thendancy not go get directly involved in the action. It started in Alabasta when he took the alias “Mr. Prince” and used the anonymety to his advantage. The nickname of “Mr. Prince” is also what fueled the royalty part of the assassin-royalty theory. After Alabasta Sanji once again remains behind the scenes in Water 7 and Enis Lobby. He sneaks aboard the train and at the end he sneaks off to open the gates of justice. Again he uses his anonymity to accomplish some important tasks that needs to be done before the strawhats can sucseed.
      Then came the bounty. While the terrible drawing gag is hilarious, it also fueld this theory. Once again Sanji was given the possibility work behind the scenes and keep his anonymity. It also gave us hope that there were someone out there who would recognise and come for sanji if his identity was revealed. At this point the theorists who are way more skilled than me pointed out that while Sanji had mentioned he was from North blue, there is no easy way to cross from North Blue to East blue. Sanji had somehow crossed the red line, and because of the bounty we assume it is because someone out there in North blue wants to get him.
      When the “Only Alive” bounty came out, it basically confirmed this theory and we were so hype for it. Then the Zou and Wholecake island arc happened. While a lot of the theory was not 100% correct, I am still amazed at the skills of the theorists and the incredible amount of details that Oda includes in this wonderful story!

    REMEMBER THE STORY OF NOLAND FROM SKYPIA? BECAUSE SANJI SAID THAT HE WAS FROM THE NORTH BLUE THEN. WHICH MEANS WE COULD HAVE KNOWN THAT SANJI HAD BEEN TO THE GRAND LIKE SINCE BEFORE THE TIME SKIP. AND ALSO ‘MR PRINCE’ FROM ALABASTA? SANJI IS AN ACTUAL PRINCE.

    • @JoshTheValiant

      It's worth noting that Sanji entered East Blue from North Blue by way of crossing the Red Line, which while arguably more impressive, doesn't itself suggest he had ever been to the Grand Line. I can't remember off the top of my head if his flashback confirms or denies his being to the Grand Line, but now I'm being nitpicky.

    That nice hollow knight background music was so perfect. Week after week every video is edited perfectly, really nice work!

    The music choices in this series have been top notch. The choice to use not only Godfather music, but The Godfather Love Theme over the scene with Bege telling Sanji about Pudding is just brilliant.

      Yeah but I think it's simply an issue of Mark underestimating the content depth of arcs early on. Early in this video series he comitted to do an arc per video and early on that was fine. But with longer arc, more interwoven plotthreads and more world depth you can see it in the videos it gets more and more rushed, he has to skip more and more stuff culminating in Dressrosa where even the 2 part split was too little and he simply didn't have time for even the basic plot!
      Zou was a comfy 22 chapters and suddenly the formula works again and Mark has time for nice details, side characters and his thoughts. I hope we won't see a repeat of Dressroa with Whole Cake Island :-)

      Especially when Gimrummy at least had the plus of having a cool design and being hot. Sheepshead is big jobber.

    A nice detail I noticed that allows you to predict sanji's "mafia family" past: In this arc sanjis cloths were like they are belong to a gangster in a vacation and every move that he has made was badass. Also when he received the letter for the wedding, he was in a "mafia meeting"(because of the amount armed man surrounding their boss).
    Given this information you could totally predict that sanji was in some way a gangster, what oda does is amazing!
