I always thought Dave looked like the most stiff drummer I’ve ever seen. He looked like he was always struggling with the “feel”. But he always had great feel. He was a powerhouse drummer with impeccable timing.
I feel the same. He was my favorite Priest drummer. He had a feel and groove that Scott just doesn’t have. He got the job done well even though he does kind of look stiff and awkward.

Les Bink was amazing but, for the music Priest did in the 80s Dave was better, more simple in his approach. But with the 90s Priest,s music changed, and I can't imagine Dave will have been able to play Pain killer or metal meltdown. Les, Dave, and Scott, three different drummers, for three different kind of music.
As a drummer myself I learned years ago that you can hear actual "body movements" in the sound itself...he may look stiff, but that stiff body movement is what made it sound tight and raw. How you physically move behind a kit at any moment will dictate the sound you give.
If Dave Holland’s playing style looked wooden, it’s only because he is so good at his job he becomes an extension of his drumsticks. The man is an underrated legend.
@@re8746 He always started that he was innocent and he was even writing a book about the matter but he passed away. Further more he also intended to press charges as he wanted to prove his innocence. Was he guilty? Maybe.......was he innocent? Maybe too.......we shall never know but I do know for a fact that people do lie for money or fame.
There are a couple of articles out there currently that raise serious questions about whether he was completely innocent and that this entire scenario was a scheme to get at what money he had.
@@re8746 kid wasn't in wheelchair and it is believed that the kid made the story up. Also I believe the accusation was attempted abuse. The kid has previously accused some other guy as well of abuse but that guy was acquitted. Look it up mate, not just a cut and dry case with the Dave incident.
Dave was the right drummer at the right time for Judas Priest. His no nonsense timekeeping style was exactly what they needed for the material they wrote during his era. "Turbo" and "Ram It Down" were likely largely drum machines by that point but Dave nailed those songs live. He was a key and often overlooked element of their success in their heyday. Every live version of 'Desert Plains" I have ever heard with Dave was simply brutal.
Sorta like a heavy-metal version of Charlie Watts in how he looks stiff or off yet hits his marks and gives the music what it needs without going overboard.
My intro to JP was unleashed and so I'm a huge Binks fan. I went through a phase where I didn't appreciate Dave. But in not recent times I've come to appreciate his work with Priest! In my opinion ever 80's Priest album was pure gold, even the outliers, POE, Turbo, and Ram it Down.

He really suited that era of JP for sure. Had a great groove, and the first time I saw Scott Travis with JP, I noticed that "Grinder" didn't have quite the same swing/feel as when Dave played it. Scott is a fantastic drummer obviously, but on the slower/mid paced stuff I do prefer Dave Holland's style. Also, noted that Richie recently stated that JP don't play Solar Angels live anymore because it just doesn't "feel right" - used to be their opening song on the POE tour and had a brilliant slow groove from Dave! Just different styles I guess, I doubt that Dave would have handled Painkiller etc!
Just look at the rest of the band...they never had neither before or after Dave that much fun on stage. Why? Because Dave brought this amazing groove, timing, power and taste.
Also they finally had some big money rolling in could be a factor. Ken downing literally ycouldn't afford a new pair of socks or a guitar until recently. Also it wasn't that Dave Holland was the greatest thing in the world but les Binks walked on them because he was disgruntled about money matters. Not saying that Mr Holland didn't do a terrific job .I can barely watch the recent touring lineup it's painful. I choose to remember these ,5 blokes from England that seemed to have unlimited talent.and were badass live.
I've been drumming my whole life and Dave was a big influence on me. The one thing that always stood out to me was the sound of his snare. That snare would take your head off.

He has my respect…. My favorite drumming of all their releases is by far Simon Phillips on Sin After Sin!!! Impeccable drumming!! Not sure if he preformed live with them.

He is a Bizarre case. He looks really stiff and awkward, like a teenager who's been playing for 6 months without any lessons. Yet...he had superb timing and feel, and was perfect for that era of Priest
That's also because metal was moving into another direction. Listen to fight, and then Halford in the early 2000's. I love 80's metal (I include hair bands in 80's metal) but it was losing it's edge in 91-92.
Ever see Charlie Watts play? It’s cool when they look like they’re swingin’, but it’s what it sounds like that’s most important. Dave played the kind of drums that fill bank accounts.

Priest best era was, without shadow of a doubt with Dave Holland. HE GAVE priest there recognisable sound. S.T, to me, sounds robotic and doesn't play the songs how they were done. Priest chasing new blood for fans with going with what was 'in' at the time. Should have done what maiden did and stick to their recognisable tone.

@@josearalat For a few years after I read about that, Injust assumed it was true - BUT more info came out about that case , and (I’m paraphrasing) he would not have been found guilty had the prosecution allowed certain evidence in court. Not sure about the details , but it sounded like he got wrongfully accused and convicted. I know that the British court system is every bit as corrupt as the American system - hell, you can be “investigated” for voicing your opinions on a number of issues , online - THAT is a perfect example of a corrupt system
@@hazor777 Being a Lawyer myself I know the system is well flawed. I don't really know the details of the case other than that the "victim" was a mentally challenge man or boy. And I have now idea how the British Penal System works. My original point was just to clarify that it wasn't just accusations but the man got convicted too, regardless of the merits of the case. By the way, I always thought weird that the man was in Priest for many years and the band never spoke of him at all.

Dave was a good drummer. But after he left they got Scott and the drumming went to another level. I don't think Dave could've handle that kind of drumming. Not saying he's bad. Just that they were both had a different style from each other. Too bad his legacy went to shit with his problems off stage. Hate to see that.
Dude is STIFF, and such an unergonomic kit setup. His snare is WAY too low. Not really using the leverage of the sticks either. Amazing he could play that well with that technique.
He played the exact same beat played at different tempos on every song he ever recorded. The most monotone simplistic slapstick timekeeper of all time.
That was great. He's unreal to watch. So stiff. Check out Nick Menza playing Megadeth songs. He looked like he was holding his breath in stages. When he died on stage I thought it was because he was holding his breath. Pushing it toot long.
some of those old kits, look like toys now. he is a bit ungainly looking, but i think thats cause of that small kit he looks like an adult playing a kids kit. An amazing drummer
Never impressed me. Judas Priest was a MUCH better band with Les Binks!!! Holland was a "stiffy" He played with his arms, NOT his wrists/hands. He kept a beat, that was about it. Not to mention his "extra curricular activities" with boys.
When he's drumming , I like the part where he fiddles with a 17 year old boy with learning difficulties. Very adept with his fingers around the hard stick.

He sits very high up on his kit. It just looks a bit awkward. It worked for him though. It would do my back in to sit like that.
Moral of this is listen with your ears, not your eyes. Dave was a beast of a drummer.

His playing on the "Screaming For Vengeance" track is quite impressive. Crazy fills and odd timing. Throws you off a bit but then he brings it back.
I think he would have turned 75 years this spring, really a great drummer.! R.I.P Dave.

Holland denied that claim, and there are quite a few reasons to speculate that he was innocent of the charges.

Binks is great - Travis has zero groove or feel.
Thankfully, some Priest fans such as yourself have the ability to listen with their ears rather than their eyes. Holland was "just okay"

Holland's rock solid wickedly grooving drumming was a big part of why Priest became the biggest metal band in the world in the early 80's.
Great drummer unfortunately was stained by accusations many stars r attacked by people looking for big settlements who knows the guy drummed for one of the world's premier metal acts !!!!
Well it was more than just accusations. He got convicted and did time in prison.

@@josearalat For a few years after I read about that, Injust assumed it was true - BUT more info came out about that case , and (I’m paraphrasing) he would not have been found guilty had the prosecution allowed certain evidence in court. Not sure about the details , but it sounded like he got wrongfully accused and convicted. I know that the British court system is every bit as corrupt as the American system - hell, you can be “investigated” for voicing your opinions on a number of issues , online - THAT is a perfect example of a corrupt system
@@hazor777 Being a Lawyer myself I know the system is well flawed. I don't really know the details of the case other than that the "victim" was a mentally challenge man or boy. And I have now idea how the British Penal System works. My original point was just to clarify that it wasn't just accusations but the man got convicted too, regardless of the merits of the case. By the way, I always thought weird that the man was in Priest for many years and the band never spoke of him at all.

Nope. Scott Travis is by far the stiffest drummer Priest have ever had. Dave Holland was a bad-ass groove machine.
Dave was a good drummer. But after he left they got Scott and the drumming went to another level. I don't think Dave could've handle that kind of drumming. Not saying he's bad. Just that they were both had a different style from each other. Too bad his legacy went to shit with his problems off stage. Hate to see that.
Scott doesn't play with any heart at all...he slops through the songs like he's dis interested.
Dude is STIFF, and such an unergonomic kit setup. His snare is WAY too low. Not really using the leverage of the sticks either. Amazing he could play that well with that technique.
Stiff yet solid.

He played the exact same beat played at different tempos on every song he ever recorded. The most monotone simplistic slapstick timekeeper of all time.
He was awesome - tight af and really cool and powerful fills.

That was great. He's unreal to watch. So stiff. Check out Nick Menza playing Megadeth songs. He looked like he was holding his breath in stages.
When he died on stage I thought it was because he was holding his breath. Pushing it toot long.
some of those old kits, look like toys now. he is a bit ungainly looking, but i think thats cause of that small kit he looks like an adult playing a kids kit. An amazing drummer

Holland was a "stiffy"
He played with his arms, NOT his wrists/hands.
He kept a beat, that was about it.
Not to mention his "extra curricular activities" with boys.

When he's drumming , I like the part where he fiddles with a 17 year old boy with learning difficulties. Very adept with his fingers around the hard stick.
