    Those 1st gen Explorers were actually really well built; it's almost like Toyota built them. My grandfather had a 92 Eddie Bauer that was super reliable and looked better than just about anything on the road. For US automakers the early 90's seems to be last of the era of "Lets try and build the best car/truck we can" and started going to "Lets try and make as much money as possilble with this car/truck".

      I think the "exploder" reputation came later when they switched from pushrod engine to the SOHC hatchet-job engine. at the same time they went to a 5 speed automatic. So they basically downgraded the engine and transmission at the same time to get a little more respect from the automotive press, and a few more HP at the top end of the rev range where you can't really drive it anyway. It's better to have SOHC and be unreliable than have a bulletproof pushrod engine apparently. That SOHC cam engine chewed up timing chains and had one on the back of the engine: engine had to be pulled to repair. Whoever designed, or Okayed that design deserves time in hell.

    The guy bought my ZJ from told me that when they did the trailer hitch recall the dealer put an aftermarket 4 wire flat connector on it. When they did that, they ran a ground from the battery, or fuse box I forget which, all the way to the back for it. At least that's the story I was told. Congrats on the upcoming executive producer, good seeing you again.

    • @DEInTheGarage

      Thanks bud! Also.. please tell me the “dealer fix” wasn’t running 12 awg wire on the OUTSIDE of the unibody under the Jeep!!! Leave it to the stealership…..

    • @robertgrauman8602
      @robertgrauman8602 Год назад

      @@DEInTheGarage They ran it from the battery/fuse box, to the firewall, then along the firewall to somewhere near the master cylinder, and down to the back of the Jeep. I honestly try not to look at it, but I have used it on occasion. Honestly, I think it was done before he got it. And, I think that's how the aftermarket 4 wire harness works, running the ground back up to the front. I've seen the universal kits run that way a lot in the u pull yards.

We have transmitters on the meters that send the readings in monthly now. so we only have to manually read the ones that get damaged. Mail ladies buy them up rom auction when we sell them. They run the prices up or I would have bought one. Like I need another Jeep in the driveway! LOL

    16:30 Those 3.7's were notorious for immobilizers and ignition switches being bad. You'll get power going in the switch but none coming out. It happens intermittently so you end up chasing everything else like with the NSS or a failing starter relay. Immobilizer switch detects a key and lets power into the ignition switch itself. So when the immobilizer fails intermittently It would seem like it has to cool down, but its just the switch working sometimes.

    • @andrewchristiansen8311
      @andrewchristiansen8311 6 месяцев назад

      The immobilizer failing wouldn't kill the car while driving, just prevents it from being started again. What you're calling the ignition circuit is the starter circuit. Two separate things. For safety reasons you can't have the car hit a pot hole, the ignition switch lose contact and the car stall lol. It's the ignition switch on the starter circuit, confusing I know. The ignition circuit is on the ECM harness.

    Doug! Congratulations on the new executive producer on the way!! Concerning Mom's Jeep... could it be a Crank position sensor? Sounds like a similar issue I sometimes have with my 08 Jeep Liberty. I've never been able to confirm or debunk anything because it's so intermittent, but it's the only thing I can think of. I guess I could try replacing it and seeing if that does it, but it doesn't happen enough. That Chevy dually didn't look too bad. I remember the video you're talking about, but I thought you said the commander should have taken on the cherokee name and the new wagoneer could have been the grand cherokee. Great video by the way as always. Take care till next time, and eventhough Bears suck this year, BEAR DOWN!

    Man I'll tell you what I hate to see those OBS trucks just sitting in a yard like that rotting away. Funny that you found that Saturn Vue in the yard those things were great vehicles I had a 2007 we drove it all the way up till about 2018 it had a few issues but nothing that was hard to repair I think the only thing my wife had against it was it used to belong to my mom I took it over after she couldn't drive anymore in 2009. Those old 90s forerunners are great I had a 95 but that 3.0 motor is garbage they don't call it the three-point slow for nothing. That old obs Dooley you were looking at didn't look to be in too bad a shape that truck in fact quite possibly had a 454 in it and if it was a 454 produced at Tonawanda engine in Canada

    As for the Tacoma, they had a factory recall for frames due to rust. My son has a 2007 we bought with 261K miles needing a head (previous owner drove it too much with a blown head gasket and cooked the head). Toyota replaced the frame and pretty much everything underneath the truck and I dropped in a salvage yard engine with 25K on it. That was 4 1/2 years and 70K miles ago and the only repair it’s needed since was an a/c compressor clutch. How dare they make an a/c clutch that only lasts 340K miles!

    You’re spot on about Saturn. I worked in future product development for the General and while there were some genuinely great ideas in their design (space frame, mill and drill panel fixture, “lost styrofoam” engine casting process), the overweight management structure dominated by accountants rather than engineers, assured that the product would fail in the marketplace.

      Eric would be happy to hear that. He and I am on different schedules right now (and he just bought a house) but as we are family and best friends I imagine he will be back on the vids soon enough

    Patriot is not it for me😅 only way it would’ve been a Cherokee is if it had a i6 of some sort and rwd. I feel like the patriot would’ve disrespected Cherokee name😅😂

      I get it bud. All I am saying is.. having worked on both the Patriots and 4th gen “Cherokee”.. the Patriot is closer to the heart and soul of the XJ. I am with you though. I wish they did more to preserve the legacy of the SJ and XJ when creating the more modern “Cherokees”

    That 3.0 V6 (3VZE) in that 4runner is dog shit. Head gasket problems for days. People swap the 3.4 L V6 into them

      Had to be motor or trans as nothing else was wrong. I am a fan of Honda up until about 2003. Toyotas aren’t worth their weight in scrap metal to me
