What are those large black structures at the waterfront?
The big black iron structures are called gantries. This is where they loaded and unloaded barges hauling freight cars full of stuff going to Manhattan. The barges were propelled by tugboats. In the old days barges were used extensively to haul freight cars in and out of Manhattan. Before refrigeration cows were hauled in by train cars and driven through the streets on the way to packing houses in Manhattan.
