    Finally, PD gets it. Many people seem to look at tomboy from a shallow perspective and are saying their clothes are too feminine for the concept. It's about them going against prejudice that exists because of their gender. I love this reaction!

    • @moonchild4701
      @moonchild4701 2 года назад +549

      Exactly! Tomboy is a way of calling a woman with a masculine attitude or style obviously but i think, that if there is a term to define what is feminine or not, it is because of the stereotypes and expectations of what a woman should be according to society. At least in Korea, which is still conservative in that regard. "I'll be the tomboy" means, call me whatever you want, I'll just be myself, that's the point of the song and some people don't get it...

    • @faceyl
      @faceyl 2 года назад +78

      Damn I feel really dumb then (zero sarcasm btw 😅) I really didn't get that, idk but to me the message was not that clear, all my first impressions were "oh, another bad ass attitude girl crush" type of concept (which to me didn't made sense in the "tomboy" context)... Aside from the concept I wasn't a fan of the song either, unfortunately, but I'm glad you folks were able to take this massage :) I feel like a lot of people will like this comeback 👍

      They just basically mentioned everything on their video.
      "It'neither man nor woman/ I'm not a doll.."
      That's why the Xed (G) since they don't wanna be boxed by being Girl anymore. Just I-DLE
      And that's what I love about Soyeon. Many people said that the lyrics were trash but I highly disagree..

    I think it was pretty clear that with Soojin gone, Shuhua was going to have to be brought forward as a vocalist and dancer. There really isn't room any more for her to stay in the background, and I think Soyeon knew what was needed. And I think Shuhua definitely delivered in "Tomboy".

      Not only shuhua but also everyone else except soyeon and miyeon. They definitely try to give more on their performance. Shuhua is the most improving one since she has the most room to improve. I definitely also surprised by how much stage presence and power in Yuqi and Miyeon's performance. The girls really want to prove that they're enough even with 5 members. They killed it.

    Many people gloss over the true meaning of the song because the MV didn't fit the "Tomboy aesthetic" that many people immediately associate it to. Some people say their clothing is too feminine, the style is too feminine, etc. but what IDLE means by saying Tomboy is through their attitude. Like, instead of clothes, it's the mindset and confidence that these people exude. "I don't care what people think, if they say I'm supposed to act this way, if I'm too much like that way." Hence the hook and lyrics: "This is my attitude." Also, by saying they're Tomboy and singing "Yeah loving Tomboy" they're essentially saying they love themselves and aren't willing to change into anything else for anyone.
    In the teasers, one of the most prominent things as well present is how the G in (G)I-DLE was missing. And Yuqi explained that by saying: "By making it blurry. We tried to focus on the essentials to get rid of prejudice that exist in women.”. Since the G essentially means female or women, they're literally detaching themselves from the preconceived notions of what a woman is supposed to be or how they're supposed to act like. It also adds to the fact that they're considering this comeback as a rebranding of sorts, they're debuting once again into a new era.
    Even the dolls are usually brushed over as having a shallow meaning. Of course, the usual, "I'm no perfect doll" message that most of us know. But even Ken doesn't simply represent IDLE's significant other but also possibly the idea of toxic masculinity itself. After the stop motion part of the dolls, it just makes more sense on how IDLE solidified the concept that they _can_ be dolls -- just in their own right. It's their decision. It's them who wants it and not anyone else.
    From Hwaa to this, IDLE really never fails to provide the most meaningful messages with the most banger concepts and songs. The entire album has no skips as well. You really have to appreciate all the small details they add into these things because you know that they (mostly Soyeon) were the ones to think of it.
    P.S: ALSO CAN I JUST SAY THEY IMPROVED SO MUCH??? Especially Shuhua. They really practiced a lot in their 1 year of inactivity as a group.

      @@DoeFoot Thank you! In all my years as a nevie, one of the things I love the most in their comebacks is trying to piece up together different messages that are subtly scattered throughout the MV and the lyrics. I just really appreciate how they make it so open for your own interpretation such as in Oh My God and you can honestly go wild with it.

      Yes, I’ve seen two reaction video the hosts (woman and man) said “I don’t think they know what tomboy is” when they saw first chorus - because they think the clothing is too feminine. : D And when the 2nd chorus, the woman said “YEAH, THIS is tomboy”.
      It then becomes interesting when Soyeon said “if you get the song right, you will get I mean tomboy.” I don’t know if she really gets it when the outro kicked in saying “it’s neither man nor woman”.
      In another video - a group of males - they watched the whole video and summarized “they can dress BOTH feminine and masculine if that’s what they like”.
      This shocked me - because I thought those rappers-like male won’t get it. And this makes me realize that, a stereotypical mindset/perspective can be both owned by man/woman … regardless gender as well. When I struggle to just be myself and not care about what others say, I should heed myself not trying to categorize others in stereotypes unconsciously.
      Just like the end of MV, idle are watching themselves breaking constraints. I should sometimes review myself from a bystander’s point of view.

      @NaraKwonPoD 2 года назад +3

      i don't like it. the fact that they have to "recategorize" themselves to be who they want to be is not a good message. the whole concept of a "tomboy" whether it be in style or attitude, is fucked up at its very core. no matter what, they are women. they don't need to be "tomboys" because of any perceived difference in femininity. the message would be way more empowering if they said "hey. this is me. this is what i like. and i'm just as much of a woman as any other".

      It kind of was- the concept/message of the song is closely related to the meaning of the group name. (G) in parenthesis means Girl, but it’s silent. It’s not what makes them them. I-DLE is what makes them them. I think having a song about overcoming societal/gender expectations in order to be the person you want to be takes them right back to their roots, but still an evolution of their style.

  • @kitkatjpg5764

    I think one of the biggest ways they've succeeded in the this comeback is creating a performance and energy that isn't vulnerable to the lack of Soojin as a member. This was one of my biggest worries as a fan, that I'd feel like a lot of the charisma and energy Soojin brought would be missing, but I felt completely fulfilled by the comeback. And their aggressive approach to the whole album itself felt really cathartic to me, and made me feel more at ease seeing them so expressive.

    the thing that frustrates me is that people that don't catch the pop punk elements are going to miss the vibe and purpose of the song. they play with the pop punk tropes pretty well with the theme of rebellion, and female pop punk has kind of always had a bit of a "not like other girls" with a slice of "fuck you" theme, so it was fun to see their take on it. it was fun.

In S.Korea, it’s very rare for a group (or a celebrity in general) to have largely positive reception (at least, initially) after any scandal. But within 2 hours of release, this song peaked at 8th place on the Melon hot 100, and was trending #2 on S.Korea’s RUclips trending. The ratings, the comments, the overall perception of the public is that this crushed the public’s expectation that Soojin’s absence and social stigma around it would lead to a downward spiral of their career. This change of sound, concept is a start of a new era for idle, and I’m so excited

Kpop is so saturated by the same sounds every so often that it doesn't excite you anymore and I always like to see groups stepping outside the norms and doing what it is they like whether it becomes popular or not. That's how I think you distinguish artists from just regular singers or idols i guess. Don't look at this song in a western perspective. I-DLE is from a conservative country (Korea). You say 'tomboy' to a woman who doesn't necessarily appear nor act feminine. Soyeon composed this song to say that's it's neither a man nor a woman, just I-dle. They will love and embrace themselves for who they are and what they are capable to do, even if they're not conforming with what society tells them to do as girls/woman.
    (There are also few female producers in Korea, and I-DLE members are one of those, mainly Soyeon)
    That's why 'G' in (G)I-DLE is missing in all the visuals, mainly because of two reasons:
    1) G stands for six (6), but now they're only five.
    2) G stands for 'girl'. They don't want to box themselves, they want to break gender stereotypes.

    As for me, they ate this cb up, like there's no tomorrow. Everything is just how it should be...The visuals are beautiful, the vocals are so rich and different yet again, the message, structure, choreo, the symbolism, even some smallest SJ references make this cb full, and well structured. B-sides are literally to die for. The way Shuhua is getting to the front lines, is something that really grabbed my attention. They really went out for blood this cb, and I love how its proving to be working the way it was supposed to. Idk...They're just the most interesting group to follow in the industry for me rn. I don't even expect anything other than excellence, which they deliver.

Is a breath of fresh air in all aspects and the b-sides! This is a no skip album

  • @fullyasian98
    @fullyasian98 2 года назад +35

    The entire comeback was a giant "fuck you" to korean society as a whole, where females are expected to be feminine all the time. The "Tomboy" thing was them saying in a world where women are supposed to be feminine, they'll be tomboy. They are rejecting traditional korean gender roles where they were told kpop producing and songwriting are a man's world, Soyeon has been speaking about this issue for about 2 years now.
    Soyeon's rap in this has triple meanings directly referencing things that are frowned about in Korean society for women (drinking, swearing, have to be less domineering in a relationship) her English isn't perfect but she's working on it cut her some slack most of yall could barely speak 1 language🙄. It fit the message they were conveying " I won't change, because you told me to".
    The rest if the album is structured well, as it has songs by minnie and yuqi as well as soyeon speaking metaphorically and literally what they were going through during the past year and reflecting on the past idle. You can feel a little of their confusion and pain in some of their lyrics as they try to continue as 5 members, perfect example is Minnie's escape, yuqi's Polaroid, there was a line from soyeon "forget the yesterday" in a track... They are speaking through the music as music was originally intended..... If you're too shallow to understand then so be it.. Not everyone can read between lines and understand situations, but stop bashing them because it's different from the old stuff

    Personally I get the impression that the song is massively based on Soojin. I'd always gotten the impression that she was a bit of a tomboy especially with her fashion sense and stuff so I feel like this song is about and for her. Think it mostly confirmed it for me when Soyeon says "I like to swear without cigarettes" coz that's like a massive hint about the whole smoking and swearing accusations made against Soojin. Also in the bridge when she says "You get the song, you'll get what I mean tomboy" I feel like she's basically telling us to figure out what and who the song is really about.

    I compare this song to Avril Lavigne's music almost, and when I first heard this song, she was the first artist I compared this song and MV to. It just has that aggressive pop punk sound and idgaf kinda vibe that Avril Lavigne has and the overall concept is something I feel she would do as well. This is definitely leaning more towards the American side of mainstream music, and I think American listners would be pretty familiar with this kind of sound coming from I-DLE.

People were hard pressed to say that they would disband or they would be locked in cube's basement and never have a comeback again or they'd only focus on solo activities. I just knew they'd refocus and come together eventually after Soojin's departure was announced. It's not like the girls were forbidden to talk to one another. I'm sure they had many a conversation amongst themselves and I pray that Soojin gave them her blessing. This comeback had that idle touch that we've been craving and My Bag is a LEGENDARY BSIDE. They don't get enough recognition nor appreciated enough for being an artist as a whole - for their craft, their work, their creative process, their individuality, etc.
    Especially among the younger fans who only see them as figures of representations, rather than talented, artistic individuals.

There where moments of uncertainty to what would happen to the group, but when the comeback was announced i think that kinda went away. After listening to Tomboy and the full album I'm confident the group came back with full force and will resume their takeover that unfortunately had a full stop during Hwaa era. i love how this song speaks loudly about double standards, it talks about how women will do some stuff and be cussed at and called names for it, but they won't settle for it this time, soyeon's rap is really subliminal and hides a lot of stuff on those lyrics.

    As a G-idle bystander, I think this comeback is a success. (Part of this is me really diving into K-pop culture while they were in hiatus, but) This is the first g-idle title track that made me want to dive into the album. Which is truly the ultimate success right?
