Cory Henry is not only an excellent musician but also teacher. I play keys as well and learned a lot about my own approach to harmony just from watching this video. "'Above All" is one of my favorite songs to play at church. No matter what your level of experience may be, there's always opportunities to learn. We are extremely blessed to have great ones like Cory!!
I can also play an 11th although it's not as comfortable as say playing the 10th. He seems to have short finger. I have long finger and I was a bass player. It takes time to get the stretch. Such a great and gifted young man who has passion and the blessings from God! I wish I could play that well although i'm pretty good. I have a lot of cords as well but he has the voicings and a better left hand than I do..
When a 10 year old prodigy is stretching to play an octave with his left hand, by the time he's full grown there's a good chance he can stretch an 11th.
Yeah, the first time I heard Bruce Hornsby, it sounded like a guy with three hands. Then I saw him and realized he has these giant first base mitt sized hands. If I'm playing Bruce stuff, I need a bass player to take the low end.
Wise words from Cory Henry indeed. I have seen too many musicians try to play every chord / progression that they know in the notebook for EVERY SONG. Go with the flow! Feel the music. Understand the atmosphere and know when it is appropriate to build up or to scale back. Blessings.
Paul Baloche wrote it. Recorded by Michael W. Smith back in the day when we used performance Tracks in church to do our specials. LOL Good ole days. Then Marvin Sapp recorded which is a modern version. But it was Michael W. Smith"s version that made me love the song.
He’s a literal chameleon. He can fit in any style, play absolutely anything and even when you think it might be someone else it isn’t. It’s still him, he’s just that far disappeared into the music and style. He’s the best musician ever in my opinion. Not the most well known or the greatest but he’s the best.
There's a whole different world that a listener experiences when this man plays, it goes beyond stringing notes together on the black and white keys. Phenomenal!
God bless your music ministry! Learning so much from this one song. It is so true that many musicians go too far away from the melody of the song and lose the audience! It sounds so majestic! Thank you! Can we have more gospel videos like this?
Cory is so beautiful!! What a blessing we have to experience the miracle God allowed to manifest within this Levite in our time!! God’s richest blessings to Cory and all the folks at WWP
Excellent Cory, from 14:37 there are no words, he starts singing the melody and little by little the lyrics and the voice disappear and only the music is left because that is how love wanted it and the piano is intense.
It seems like he plays the best in keys we normally don’t play. Like I hate playing in the key of B and E it’s definitely a different approach that you need to be mindful of what and who your playing for and with. It takes restraint to stay in structure when it’s so open but to harmionic and play ebharmonic you have to open the mind to space

I was so glad to hear him lecture on the process of reharmonization. I personally get so sick of musicians that just try to get so over the top and of course their intention is just to impress people and you become a distraction from the worship or the singer. And frankly the glory that belongs to to God in that moment. And let's be honest the bottom line is and I know y'all don't want to hear it but God is a jealous God and He does bring folks down who exhault themselves more highly than they ought to. So I think our music and our service should be to glorify God and not ourselves.
Preach Sir! My father was a pastor/singer and musician and he use to tell me all the time it is great to be progressive BUT it is even better to be disciplined and if you are not accompanying the singer, choir, minister or blending with the other musicians, then you are a distraction! Sadly a lot of musicians these days though talented wonder why they don't get hired and spend most of their playing time sheddin instead of touring. So glad I learned when I was young that there is a time to shine and a time for discipline and to understand the difference between the two.

Don't sleep on the fact the he's easily playing an 11th with his left hand. Average hand can hit the octave comfortably; he's got 4 on that.
