Thanks, it's nice to remember this concert. I was on it. Better concert was in'70thies in Belgrade Pioneer Hall, like a part of Newport Jazz Festival in Belgrade. It was with Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius and.... Best ever...!!!

Can't agree there. IMHO the Syndicate band were at their best around 1991, almost totally due to Zawinul himself really. I heard them at a jazz club in Stockholm and also recorded the same consert from a radio broadcast later. I like this laid back and swinging drummer though (as some of the other drummers he used was almost hiphop sounding...) The whole band here is great, including the addition of a female singer. But Zawinul is the most uneven musician I know of. He made several important compositions and recordings, especially with Shorter, but more often than not, his playing is sadly sloppy. Perhaps it was the same great ego that allowed him to walk his own path and create some really unique music that also tended to make him rather careless in many of his performances.

interesting aspect- Anthony Jackson's flanger, tritone note choices and staccato thumb phrasing to open the bass solo, into development.

Best thing to do with the soundman in this situation is fade out the vamp...move to the board and turn up your own mic . I’m not sure what they hear in the monitors but Joe did hand gesture his mic must go up. Not the best mix; which kills the tune and the playing.

First and foremost, Zawinul played (and arranged) it a hundred times better on _Night Passage_ than he ever did after that, at least that has been recorded. That synthesizer solo is one of his absolute peaks!
Weather Report versions of fast City, Three Views Of A Secret cannot be done any better! jaco didn't like Wayne Shorter 'skirting' around the melody but done straight. Still joe's arrangement is the best. Fast City was done well but the Weather Report version is the best.
