    I am 70 and broke my left humerus in 3 places playing pickleball on January 17. I found you on RUclips at 4 weeks and am enjoying your 3-5 week weeks video. It feels so good to be doing something to wake up my body. I will see my orthopedist in 2 weeks and look forward to a good report because of your knowledgeable/helpful videos. Keep up the good work!

    I'm 78 and fractured my Proximal Humerus in 2 spots 4 weeks ago after tripping while on a walking tour of Colonial Panama City. An orthopedic surgeon in Panama wanted to immediately do surgery, but I chose to fly home and be treated in the U.S. I'm glad I waited because my surgeon in Los Angeles says I don't need surgery - just rest, patience, and physical therapy. Your videos are a great help to me between my in-person PT visits. Thank you!

    Thanks so much for this. I am 2.5 weeks in with a broken proximal humerus. I was almost at the end of a half marathon walk with some of my dragonboat team. I tripped at the top of a sand dune and went full force onto my shoulder and elbow. I have been told from recent xray that it is healing well but now I don't go back for 4 weeks. I had been using my hand a bit but had not straightened my arm. My elbow and forearm is very bruised and sore still and it hurt to straighten it at first but it has improved already. So glad I found your videos as I had been told I can't do PT until shoulder bone is healed. I think by then my elbow would have totally seized up. I am 61 and this is my 1st fracture so I had no clue about what to do. I will be following you every day. Thanks. I have continued with your exercises but I have a concern. I am pretty sure that my elbow area was never examined or x-rayed etc. I have been thinking it was injured too because it doesn't feel right and was grazed, bruised and sore also. There is still some bruising on my lower arm, it was worse than at the top but I had been told to expect bruises to go down my arm so said nothing at first check up
      1 wk in.The 2nd hospital appt. is still 2 weeks away so I booked with GP. but he cancelled and I cant get next appt. there either for almost 2 weeks. I checked out your 5-6 wk. vid. The ex. with both arms straight out and bent 90' then moving back has increased my elbow concern. I am unable to hold my injured arm adjacent to my body when bent. It points inwards and even using my other arm to push it, only helps a bit. Does this seem normal at 4 wks after broken shoulder or is it likely to be my elbow muscles/tendons or bone that is the issue? I just want some idea if I should push the issue with the hospital to check me sooner or just wait.

      @dradamfields  Год назад

      I like to call and, in a friendly way, ask the person over the phone to help you and see if there are any cancellations to get you in sooner. Lack of range of motion after an injury can mean adhesions are starting to form. Getting some educated hands on you and some diagnostics can be revealing and relieving. In the meantime, keep up the exercises to your tolerance.

      Thanks for your story, Hugh. As you have more confidence in you knee and shoulder I really need you to work on balance. Studies show 70% fewer injuries in football players that did a mild balance program before the season. We need your brain to be hyper-connected to your body. At 66 you can rebound. At 76 and 86 it becomes way more complicated. Even if you just balance on one leg (as you advance use and balance mat or close your eyes) for 5 min each leg at 4x/week. I like a minute on one leg and then switch to the other leg for 10minutes.

    My name is Luminita and I'm from Romania.
    About a month ago I fell and got a humeral fracture on my left arm.
    My arm was fixed in a bandage and a desurel orthosis.
    After 4 weeks I went to the hospital and the X-Ray confirmed the complete recovery of the humerus.
    They recommended physical therapy, so I’ve subscribed to your RUclips channel and I’m watching you ever since and doing all the moves that you teach, every day.
    Unfortunately I have a blood condition under permanent treatment with Eliquis and when I fell there was “an explosion of blood vessels” and my left arm had a necrotic look and it is still swollen.
    It still hurts but I can use the arm with some limitations.
    I trust I will make a full recovery with your support!

Bouncing off the bonnet 180 degrees onto the road where my left leg which got really bad internal bruising and my left hand has misaligned carpal on the outside. Thanks so much for these excellent videos. If I might add something from my own experience - 69M, fractured surgical neck of proximal humerus 3 weeks ago - I have found:
    1) Let pain be your guide. Just ease into exercises until you feel pain... pain is indicating that you have reached the limit of what you are ready for.
    2) That having been said, get your arm out of the sling as soon as possible. By day 3 after the accident I could just let my arm hang a bit, and after 12 days I stopped using a sling altogether. I started "pendulum" swings on day 4 or 5, I think - just gently, but gradually increasing the circle. Each person is different, and advances at a different pace, but the sooner you get gentle movement the less freezing you are likely to have. Of course, follow your doctor's advice.
    3) Try to get some sunshine, especially on the bruised parts of the arm - at least 20 mins of morning or afternoon sun if you can. (Avoid harsh midday sun - you don't want too much UV.) There's growing evidence of the benefits of near-infra-red light, and a LITTLE bit of UV-B is necessary for the body to manufacture Vitamin D.
    4) Exercise as soon as you can. I started short, safe, outdoor walks on day 2. Gradually go further and faster - you will know what feels comfortable. Good for the circulation etc., but also does wonders for the state of mind. (Depression can affect some people after a trauma, and staying indoors and inactive can worsen it.)
    5) Eat a healthy diet.
    6) I found it was hard to get comfortable in bed. A reclining armchair was best for the first two weeks.
    7) Oh yeah, don't smoke and go easy on the alcohol. Whether your arm is broken or not!

      @@AngeAnglade No, I just took one panadeine morning and night for the first week, and after that no painkillers as I had almost no pain (provided I did not actively use the shoulder muscles.) (Panadeine = 500mg paracetamol/acetaminophen + 30mg codeine). I don't use the sling at all now. Just be careful when not using the sling: you don't want to use the shoulder muscles actively at all until at least 4 weeks, because they could put pressure on the break and even deform it in extreme cases. But passive movement - like the "pendulum" - is great. Also, presuming your only injury is the prox. humerus, you can start moving the elbow and wrists, passively at first (using your good hand to lift the bad one) then actively. I was lucky: a simple, clean break just under the joint. Of course a more complicated fracture can cause more pain and take longer to heal.

      @@AngeAnglade My reply to you seems to have disappeared, so briefly: Not really any pain unless I try to raise my arm unassisted. Not quite ready for that. I can, however, bend from the elbow sufficiently to touch my ears, and I can carry light weights (like a novel or a fork) in that hand (keeping the upper arm just hanging.) I only used the sling at night in week 1. I have a nice, reclining armchair with wide, padded arms, so I slept on my back in that chair for the first 2 weeks. Week 3 I went back to my bed. At the moment I am doing "passive" exercises only, where I support the injured arm (I can then raise it to a horizontal position.)

    I fractured my shoulder after a fall. After my fall, I went to the hospital and had an x-ray . After the x ray, I was told by the doctor that I had fractured my shoulder. The doctor told me that the nurse would give me a sling to put on, and I could go home afterwards , The doctor also said I would be getting an appointment from the Orphophedic specialist. I went home from the hospital with a sling on . I saw the Orphophedic specialist 10 days later, and the Orphophedic specialist got me to have another x-ray, and I was told after the doctor saw my x-ray that I didn't need surgery he told me that in about a weeks time I could start straightening my arm and do some exercises which he showed me but didn't demonstrate them very well. The doctor just said I should do the exercises a few times a day . He then told me that I would have to come back in 4 weeks for another appointment. I wasn't told if I would need to keep wearing the sling for those 4 weeks until I see the doctor again. I wasn't offered to see a physiotherapist before I started to the streches. I went to my GP the next day and told my GP what the Orphophedic Specialist had said about me having to exercise my shoulder and the doctor showed me how to do them better than the Orphophedic Specialist did. I am not going to see a physiotherapist to help me with exercises until possibly in 4 weeks' time when I see the Orphophedic specialist again. The videos of physiotherapists demonstrating the exercises are very helpful to me.

    I had the luxury(?) of falling at work, so t least I'm on worker's compensation. Saw the surgeon two weeks after the injury and was given vague instructions to take it out of the collar & cuff sling occasionally and move it a little. I ran across your series of videos in the third week and I'm following as best I can. Some things I'm ahead of your videos, and some things I'm way behind in. I'll see the surgeon again next week (6 weeks after the injury), and hope to get more direction for therapy.

    Hi, I’m Rons wife Sherrie. Broke humorous at the ball and going down like a lightning bolt 3 and a half weeks ago. Ortho dr says I’m ready for PT and i will start that right away but seeing your video thinking i could just follow you. Im 76 yrs old and this is my first broken bone. Your comment that its harder for my age worries me but I’m very healthy and have no major health issues and take no medications except prilosec. Should i do these several times a day every day? Thank you so much….determined to get through this very painful injury.

    • @dradamfields
      @dradamfields  Год назад +1

      Hi Ron and Sherrie, First thing you need to do is get off of the Prilosec. Get a telehealth call with me (link below) to get this accomplished. The reason is that the use of PPIs (proton pump inhibitors) is a risk factor for development of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures. We can go over other options for your gut health and, if you have osteoporosis, we can go over other strategies for bone strengthening, etc.
      I think you need to do my exercises and stay in contact with your MD. Ask your MD whether you have osteoporosis. You may need close supervision on this rehab and show the videos to the PT.
      I want to give you the 100% go-ahead but I need to know, given your age and drug history, the condition of your bones.
      If all checks out go forth with gusto. If not, go forth slowly and with caution.

    Dear Dr Fields, like most of your viewers, thank you so much for helping me through this very stressful and painful time as my humerus fracture heels. I wanted to ask; whilst I consider myself fit & in shape, I seem to be 4 to 6 weeks behind your fitness programme which isnt like me. I did have surgery with a 27cm titanium rod inserted into the bone marrow through my shoulder and two pins (top & bottom in my arm) to hold all in place, could this be the reason and if so, am I still on schedule?
    I had bruising for 8 weeks after surgery and my arm is still slighltyl swollen 12 weeks on, I still have pain and the x-ray shows the humerous still hasn't heeled and will take another 3/4 weeks the expert say.

    • @dradamfields
      @dradamfields  Месяц назад

      Hi David, The video series is appropriate for you and will get great results. However, it was originally designed for non-displaced humeral head fractures. I assume, because you needed surgery, that yours was displaced. There are other factors that go into the speed of recovery such as age, use of NSAIDs, diabetes, activity levels, Vitamin K and D levels and more. If you end up with a "fracture non union" try ESWT. In the meantime, I urge you to find some gift in this trial. Your "expert" may just be right with 3-4 weeks more. Hang in there!

    What kind of brace/splint are you using? I have a break of the proximal humerus right below the ball to at the very top of the shaft. The brace I have on and have had on for five weeks is fit made, and fitted by my physical therapist. Unfortunately, the straps that go underneath my armpit are terribly uncomfortable. I’d like to try one that goes across the body and under the arm of the good shoulder and I’m wondering what brand of split that it you are using in this video

    Thank you for these videos. I'm eight weeks out now but early on in my recovery I was disappointed that my orthopedic doc said they intended to give me a frozen shoulder. I had already had the rotator cuff fixed on the arm that I broke and there was a danger that might have been injured as well necessitating another surgery. I didn't want that! I was already feeling stifled with the sling I had and purchased a compression brace to protect my shoulder movement but also give my arm more freedom. As soon I could I was doing pendulum swings (learned from rotator cuff recovery). I was determined I would NOT have a frozen shoulder! Someone had also told me about cool laser therapy and then hearing you talk about it I figured it couldn't hurt. My chiropractor's office offers that. So I've done that on the break and the rotator cuff just in case there was any damage done there. Needless to say my orthopedic doctor was NOT happy with my recovery at six weeks and that I wasn't wearing the sling. I had been wearing the brace though. You think they would be thrilled. She only said "We don't mind giving people a frozen shoulder." Really? And my ability to move my arm was unbelievable! I'm not religious and disciplined with the exercises but when I would think of it I would do certain things as much as my arm could tolerate. I've been in occupational therapy now for three weeks and she believes that my rotator cuff is fine given my range of motion and capabilities. I'm weeks ahead of where I should be! I haven't followed all the videos (yet) as I've been able to get back to work more, but plan to look at them further as I progress. Again, thank you!

    I would have coped with sustaining this injury if it were not for the renal team telling me I would have to go back on dialysis just before my discharge from hospital.
    I'm not smiling I'm damn furious at my nephrologist's repeated stuff ups this year as to the management of my transplant. Too many stuff ups to catalogue here. I see a lawyer on the horizon, and I don't even need a crystal ball to work that out or a palmist.
    Was the physio in hospital pushing me too far too quickly, when he asked me to do the pendulum swing just a week after my accident? Now, I'm to do passive lifting of that arm using my good arm as leverage just 3-4 weeks post injury, but it hurts like hell and makes a clunking sound. I feel it as well. An orthopedic person today said it shouldn't do that, though she also said my fracture was well aligned but will take longer to heal because of my medical condition. Just so you know I'm not diabetic. Instead, I had drop kick neglectful parents.
    I won't see the physio for another 5 days. I'm trying to avoid analgesia as my liver enzymes are up a bit. Just so you know I don't drink alcohol. I'm just cursed as my mother used to enjoy telling me.
