There are so many directors that would've had him fight the guy in a completely unnecessary duel and forget that he's got a gun. But no, this is consistent and in-character for Indie. He's got more advantage than he has patience.

This scene is hilarious but what makes it a bummer for the guy in black is that he actually spent a long ass time learning how to use a sword to be in an epic fight against Indy. Harrison Ford like the others on set, was sick from eating the local food I believe. As a result, Harrison asked Spielberg if he could just shoot him and Spielberg was all for it. So mate with a sword spent all that time learning to use the sword, only to not even use what he learned. You can only imagine how annoyed and/or pissed he was that it was all for nothing.
