@@johnnyskinwalker4095if you’re referring to sharks in general, that is incorrect. There are two sharks that reach that size and bigger: whale shark and basking sharks are bigger. Both are plankton and krill esters, luckily. Basking sharks average size is 26 feet. Whale sharks are up to 40.
The scare works because it's in between two jokes. Also the character of Brody acts as a surrogate for the audience, so the first time he sees the shark properly is also the first time we the audience sees it too.
If you're ever asked what "Zeitgeist" means its people who've never seen Jaws but they know "youre gonna need a bigger boat". I think thats the best explanation of what it means.
As someone who grew up watching Jaws, it's so weird seeing a new generation that hasn't seen the film, but EVERYONE knows "you're gonna need a bigger boat".
Pratical effects often look better than CGI. CGI isn't used because it looks better. It's used because it's cheaper and makes some things that would otherwise be tricky doable. Look at movies like the Lord of the Rings trilogy or Mad Max: Fury Road, where the director purposedly decided to use mostly pratical effects and limit the CGI to things that couldn't be dome otherwise. The result is much more realistic.
@ yes I agree?? My comment is highlighting the fact that 48 years later the effects of the film still hold up without cgi, so many films in this day and age highly rely on practical effects because of the lack of funds they have and that’s what makes them top tier above the ones that have the funding to use cgi or any kind of special effects they have at their disposal. I will always appreciate the films that use practical effects over cgi or digital because that shows they have a love for their craft.
I saw this movie at the theater when I was 8 yrs old. I still remember my reaction plus the audience reaction lol. I remember literally turning around in my seat bc it was so scary yet freakin great! Still one of my top 5 movies to this day 🙌
What really makes this scene work is the fact that there's no build-up. All of the other appearances of the shark or something equally as shocking (such as Ben Gardner's torso appearing in the hole in his boat) has been accompanied by a gradual musical build-up. The fact that there's no music prior to the shark popping up out of the water is what really gets us, because it's so unexpected.
Which matches the scariest part about it. It's not just how big it is, it's that you couldn't even see a shark that big until it was already coming out of the water.
I was 12 when my older cousin and i went to the movie theater to watch this. We lived in Orange County California and going to the beach was our passion. He surfed but after seeing Jaws I passed on doing that. Still my favorite movie all time. The book is a great read and goes into greater detail ... 😊
This movie is 50 years old next year, I believe. If there are people that haven’t seen a classic like this yet imagine all the great movies that still await them to discover. I mean Hitchcock, John Ford, Kubrick, Fleming, Capra Selznick name your favorite there are so many.
I saw this with my parents at a drive in as a kid. I spent the next 8 years refusing to swim in lakes or any swimming pool if I couldn't see the drain. I know there shouldn't be any sharks but I didn't KNOW, lol.
I am in my 60's i had spent christmas break 73 and spring break 74 visiting my grandmother in St Petersburg Fla swimming in the Gulf daily summer 74 watched JAWS in theaters HAVE NOT SWAM IN SALT WATER SINCE. Not a chance in hell of that happening again.
think being 10, yrs, old. jumping scares weren't a thing yet. this Fn scene scared the crap out of me. probably needed therapy. luckily, grew up in iowa, so I got over it easily enough. but everyone watching this now and jumping, 1976, this stuff was new. it hit totally raw unsuspecting nerves. the literal 1st blockbuster. Spielberg is a genius.
Its hard to impress on today's "reactioners" what a moment this was with 800 people in the theater. Everybody had forgotten about the shark by this point. When Roy said "Shit" it got a huge laugh because that actually was not a word you heard very often in films. With the audience relaxed and laughing the shark finally surfaces. The laugh turned to a giant scream. There was so much buzz in the theater that you couldn't hear Roy's famous "Bigger boat line".
The mechanical shark wa gonna be used a lot, but it was hardly ever working. That caused Speilberg to change direction and not show it much, which only increased tension and anticipation. Also, the person who scored the music, John Williams, sang the main theme to Steven. He laughed and thought it was a joke. He eventually understood how with an orchestra it could really be a tension builder.
Roy knew how to look scared as F. Watch 2010: the Year we make Contact. When Hal says “turn around” I think 2010 becomes like Event Horizon. A CSI in space, wondering what happened to Frank Poole & David Bowman & the anonymous 3 in the Kubrick film 2001: a space odyssey.
This film, at the time of release was more graphic and traumatizing than about any other movie before it. It messed up a lot of people, not just kids for years in terms of going into the Ocean. In fact, beach goers were markedly down at beaches for some years.
Fun fact:: there is a scene in the jaws movie where you can see what appears to be a UFO going very fast across the sky in the background , maybe the filming crew did not notice it during filming or they just decided to leave it in that particular scene in the movie.👍👍
My usual consistent comment, on any Jaws review. The following summer after it's release, Jaws struck such primal fear into people, beach attendance nationwide dropped by 70%.
the acting from those "reaction" people are so bad and cringe it's hilarious, ridiculous and embarrassing at the same time. It also shows how simple minded the mainstream is because even a child would know right away, that they are just acting.
The fact that this is # 35 on the AFI list of 100 movie quotes is an affront to our sensibilities. (not ranked though) It's #3 on the Hollywood Reporter ... Ranked now that is more like it. But then in the same list there are like 3 Star Wars quotes. The worst movie franchise in world history, I put it below Twilight or Hunger Games. Fuck off with Star Wars quotes.
Shaw’s silent reaction when he finally sees just how big the shark is…magnificent.
No CGI. Practical effects combined with absolutely great direction, acting and writing.
This movie made Steven Spielberg a household name. 🦈
There was no real cgi back then. But Jurassic Park had plenty! 😉
@@StreetHierarchy Jurassic Park had about 4 minutes of CGI.
literally a mechanical shark
The first “block buster “ because people had to wait in line around the block to see it.
All of the production woes that cursed this movie actually contributed to making it better.
"That's a twenty-footer."
"Twenty-five... and three ton of him."
I realised the other day that 25 foot sharks did not exist
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 well they do exist in at least 2 other species, but great whites usually max out at 21ft.

It’s hysterical how a lot of these guys and gals knew the “bigger boat” line but seemed surprised that it came from this legendary movie.
The scare works because it's in between two jokes. Also the character of Brody acts as a surrogate for the audience, so the first time he sees the shark properly is also the first time we the audience sees it too.

that famous line was improvised
from what i heard Roy Scheider didnt see the shark till that scene so his reaction when he jumps is genuine
I remember seeing “Bruce” during my family trip to Universal Studios Hollywood many, many years ago
Hilarious when the Chief's head pops up.

My favorite scene in the movie. It shows theee exact first presence of the shark. Everyone gasped it shows that Jaws is the most......
Roy Schneider really looked freaked out that's acting
I enjoy when Popcorn in Bed get really scared, just like when they react to the Raptor attack in the breaker room.

Love this movie. Also it's the sole reason why I don't go in the ocean. Sharks can't eat you if you're on dry land. Unless it's a Sharknado.
I really like this movie. I love the fact that the line he said was not what he was suppose to say.
I can say as someone who studies sharks they are experts at sneaking up on you
I expect no less from predatots
This scene is cool. Great white sharks actually come to the surface and stick their head out of the water to look around.

When will someone make the full movie reaction mashup of Jaws 1 and 2? These clips are ok, just ok.
in the title it reads you're GONNA need a bigger boat not GOING, sounds padantic but it bugs me
