The only reason EVs are selling to fleet is the tax saving.
Take an EV with list price of £50000, they reclaim the vat , and get a hefty discount from manufacturer , so that £50k car could be £42500 with a 15%discount, and without the vat £35500, they can then offset that entire amount against tax in the first year.

The nice thing about a 1 or 1.5 ton petrol or diesel hatch or salon is that it can be pushed off the road yourself, in the event of any accident or operational issues. It can be towed by another similar car, or just a regular AA or RAC van.

I swapped my company Mercedes-Benz E350d estate for a Tesla Model Y Long Range. That's the 'how'. Now the 'how come?... The big Benz was costing me £7,222 per year in income tax as a Benefit In Kind (BIK). Now, the BIK on the Tesla (being a tree-hugging, Bretta-loving car) is....£498 per year. So, that's an income tax saving of nearly £30,000 in my wallet, not the Government's over a 4-year business lease. I'm laughing, literally laughing. We're all going next year too. Don't care about selling the car, don't care about tyres, don't care about maintenance, don't care about battery life. All in the business lease. I love EV's. And when the tax breaks stop (which they will), I'll just move into the next income tax efficient fuel as I did from petrol to diesel, and now diesel to electric. Happy times mate.

Actually 63% of the UK new car market is to the fleet sector. The ONLY thing that matters there is Benefit In Kind Tax. Resale value - doesn't matter, tyre replacement and maintenance - doesn't matter. Nothing else matters other than BIK tax. If you are fortunate to have the choice, why would you not choose an EV that costs you less than £500 per year in tax? I don't particularly like my Tesla, it's not perfect by any means. But the money it saves in tax is impossible to ignore. Over a 4-year business lease alone it will save me nearly £30,000 in income tax. In my pocket. A no brainer.

Lots of people have found themselves financially upside down thanks to the EV cost saving narrative. Frequently, the total cost of ownership for some EVs can even outweigh that of a bona fide supercar, for example:
The 2022 Audi E-Tron S has an 83KW usable battery, and costs £64 to fill (public UK rapid charger at 80p KW), and delivers about 190 miles of real world range, or 33p per mile.
A Lamborghini Huracán with an 80L fuel tank, costs £112 to fill up (£1.40 per litre), and delivers about 330 miles of range, or 33p per mile.
The depreciation costs after 3 years for the Huracan is about 15% (£40k), for the E-Tron S the 3 year depreciation cost is about 60% (£60k)
Slight road tax reduction for the Audi but insurance costs for the two cars is broadly similar for many.
Replace 'E-Tron' with (bank balance) 'Taycan' for a true horror show... losses in excess of £60k in ONE YEAR.

That’ll soon be a non-issue. Good batteries (Tesla and all recent model EVs of other brands) ought to be good for 20 years or 500k miles or even a million. But what if you get a dud? It happens. Well, MG will offer a lifetime warranty on the battery, and that ought to have a good effect on residual value. Which affects the purchasing decision. So I expect other car companies to follow suit; they know exactly how often a battery fails or gets damaged, and the benefit of offering the warranty will exceed the cost by far.

Forget the many other issues. Depreciation related to the massive cost involved with replacing the batter is the killer. 300 miles is enough for most punters, but most of them don't have money to burn even if they have a family that they don't mind burning.
If the battery can be replaced for less than £4000 including fitting even I might consider buying a used one, but not if the cost exceeds the value of the car after just 3 years.
Until this is fixed the maths is not even close to adding up. Even then we still have all of the other issues. Many people simply prefer a car with an ICE under the hood. An electric motor is simply not a turn-on for either the gals or the guys. Similar to an expensive and very life-like rubber man or woman, to the real thing.
I am the sort of driver, at the sort of age, with the right sort of income, living in the right sort of place to be a perfect customer for an EV and even I don't want one. If I did buy one my wife would refuse to even get near it, never mind drive it herself with the kids on board. Nowadays in her country they only cremate dead people and even then only after a long religious ceremony. Unfortunately burning wives alive went out of vogue many years ago.
Many used cars from the West end up in the 3rd world. If you tried plugging your EV in a 3rd World village plug socket the entire road would be plunged into darkness.

I ask this because we are now being told that, to avoid premature battery degradation, you should not charge the battery of an electric car to more than 80% and also you should never let it drop below 20%. That only leaves you 60%.

Most of these will have been leased from new, so depreciation is largely irrelevant. They were optimistically priced by Audi when new but now make great value used buys. They are significantly cheaper than a similar age/spec Q5/7 or BMW X3/5 and of course will be much cheaper to run.

Yeah, but someone has to pay for that high MSRP and depreciation. You pay for the high sticker price on your down and lease payments and the dealer or manufacturer takes the hit on the depreciation.

Next, you'll be charged to have the car traded in for recycling because the batteries are too toxic to process. I can see many instances of trees jumping out in front of them on dark, lonely lanes at night. 😮

After another 4 years it will be hard to find a buyer at all whereas my 20014 diesel Q5 is still running in at 60000 miles.

I’m gonna stick with my nifty little C3 as long as it keeps going, thanks all the same.

My 2002 Suburban is 5100 lbs and you could just about park that toy in the cargo area.
