    This is very useful as i am about to make a move on training my dog who is a Doberman X GSD. Is the bite work a part of the training and is this included in practical test?

    • @MichaelWakleySmith
      @MichaelWakleySmith  3 года назад +1

      Hey. Good to hear you are training up your dog. For protection dogs, yes it is part of the training and is in the exam to pass as a team. The practical exam from memory is; Protection bite & release, patrol, obedience, article search & dog agility. Hope that helps 👍🏻

      Do you want me to start asking some NASDU questions on my videos? I can do them instead of the SIA ones for a while.

    Are only certain breeds aloud to do security work? I ask, as normally you only see malinois and shepherds.

    • @MichaelWakleySmith
      @MichaelWakleySmith  3 года назад +1

      There are 4, what they call ‘recognised protection breeds’. These 4 are -
      • German Shepherds
      • Malinois
      • Rottweilers
      • Dobermans
      I would say from training that German Shepherds are the favourite breed, with Malinois & Rottweilers splitting the other 40%. I am yet to see a Doberman and not heard of anyone talk about someone having one.

      I think it is all personal to you. I just can’t tell you what they are like, because I have never seen a trained one in person. I would be interested to see this tho.

      @@MichaelWakleySmith I like to be different. I also love dobeys. I'm currently waiting to move into a bigger property before getting another pup. I have a mastiff x who I rescued and don't currently have room for another lol

      Dobeys are nice looking dogs. My mate from school had 2 as pets when we was growing up and I use to walk them during the day when I was unemployed.

    also wanted to consider getting a rescue G.S dog as you mentioned give it a better life but it seems to me they make it so hard to adopt dog and all their rules and regulations so might be better off just buying a dog :(

    • @MichaelWakleySmith
      @MichaelWakleySmith  3 года назад

      Ahh that sucks. I mean, I imagine they wouldn’t give you a soft dog if you say your are a securoty dog handler, but not all rescues are cute and cuddly. It is a nice thought, but like you say it may be easier to buy the first dog and see how things go

      My GSD is a reacue dog he’s got the best of both worlds to be good with my kids and partner at home and then aware & vocal at work. My malinois is from police ( failed for tracking unfortunately) but shes also best of both worlds

      Cheers for commenting. I was beginning to think that I have put this out there, but rescue dogs aren’t homed with security dog handlers.
