I think it use to be the way, but there is still some companies about that do provide a vehicle & care. Like the police, you can only use these vehicles during work time. So most dog handlers would rather their own vehicle, A. So you can set it up to how you want it & B. So that you can use the vehicle for the dogs outside work time. Companies provide dog insurance for work time, but that covers live bite & accidental bite cover, not health. It has been known for companies to help pay vets bills for dogs injured on duty, but that will depend on your employer. Most company vans I have seen are normally your smaller type, with one or 2 dog cages. A lot of handlers have 2+ dogs that they work and want a larger van to set up an area in the back for sitting etc. So in conclusion, it is probably more that handlers want their own van, rather than companies not providing one. Working as a Door Supervisor Course Book amzn.eu/d/dJgmXVk I used the security guard version for my course and the instructor read it page by page. You may get one on the course (not 100% sure tho), but this should give you a good bit of information before the course date. I did my course in lockdown and I was the only one with a book, everyone else spent 3 days writing notes on a pad. Hope that helps ✌🏻

Hey Lou. Good to hear you are looking to follow your passion. You have a similar story to me 4 years ago. Just one thing before I start, NASDU will not team you with your Corso. So you will need another dog for a work team certificate. There are courses where you can use course dogs. The ones I know of are week intensive. It’s probably each handler to their own. You can only deploy your dog until the threat is no longer there. I would say that if you are going to handcuff someone that has a dog attached to them, that would be very difficult. You would probably have to out the dog and then handcuff. Also their welfare is your responsibility, meaning that you will need to do what you have to until the ambulance can attend to treat any injuries. What you hope is that if you have to deploy your dog, they will then comply and you can out your dog. Then you can talk them through some first aid and the thought of the dog would stop them from becoming violent again. It’s real world, so every situation would be different and rarely will it go the way you want it to.

I don’t think there are many cons to either van, but there are pros to the bigger van. The vivaro gives me 3x as much leg room in the front. It also has a bench seat, so you can adjust how you want to sit. The whole rear was taken up by the cage in the Caddy, where the Vivaro allows me a lounge space for a beanbag chair. The small van is nippier and probably gets you places quicker, especially in cities. If the Vivaro was solely a work van, I would also get rid of the bench seat and open that up for more space. Think of it as an open plan van. I wouldn’t go back to the smaller van now. It would be like trying to move your wife & kids out of a 4 bedroom house into a 1 bedroom flat.

Yeah I have heard them quite a lot, from living & working in the countryside for 25 years. Interesting take & not something I thought of. I would say I’ve never heard one like that, but as I know there are foxes around, you have me second guessing myself. 👍🏻

It’s highly unlikely you will get a NASDU & NTIPDU with a Cane Corso. They have their 4 breeds and will bend to some crosses of them breeds and herders. Everything else is probably going to be rejected. BIPTD are slightly more flexible on breeds, but you would have to contact them about Corso’s. There are 4 recognised breeds, GSD, Mali, Rottie & Doberman. Then you can use herders. My recommendation is always a German Shepherd. Mali’s are Malis, great but hyper. Rotties and Dobermans, it can be really hard to find a good one unless it’s imported. GSD is a good all rounder and ideal for your first security dog. Again, speaking to a trainer who can point you in the right direction of a dog or breeder that will be suitable. Not all GSD’s are security dogs. Prices can vary between £0 & £3,000, depending on breeding, training, pup or Fully trained.

My crate is from a brand I’ve never heard talked about. It’s called Craven Equipment & a google search doesn’t come up with anything. My trainer came across it and fixed it up for me. Lintran and TransK9 are the most popular, with Lintran probably being closest to my crate.
