- To commemorate the Princess of Wales on the 25th anniversary of her passing, ITN Archive is presenting a series of clips covering her years of public service between 1980 and 1997.
This clip, from 18 September 1980, may be the earliest-recorded news footage of Lady Diana Spencer. It was captured when rumours first surfaced of her romantic involvement with the Prince of Wales.
There is a lot to note in this short clip, from the camera’s uncertainty of what Diana looks like, to the 19-year-old's efforts to escape the unwanted press attention.

A LOVELY part of London.
I miss it.
Diana was a most beautiful person. Everybody should be ashamed (especially the paparazzi and the now King) for how she was treated. She was the rarest type of person, an absolute angel with a heart of solid gold which the world did not deserve.
Let's not just take one or two pictures. Let's annoy people as much as possible.
when I lived when I lived in South Boston they were filming The Departed with Jack Nicholson Martin Sheen Leonardo dicaprio and others and I have to tell you I took about a thousand pictures!😂you just can't believe you're right there ..the money shot🎉!(they could have given her a better car and also they threw her to the wolves because did anyone teach her about paparazzi or try to shield her? only weeks after she's already been known to be Prince Charles's)
@@ashleytenczarcurran944 The car she had was the vehicle her parents bought her. She wasn't rich, it was an average car. She knew about the paparazzi but it's a whole different situation when you're front and center and there's someone taking a photo of you everywhere you look. It wasn't until she was engaged to Charles that she got greater protection.
@@thomashutsonYes, she was rich! her father was an earl and her mother had a lot of money, the apartment of Diana lived in London in 1980 was bought by her mother.
@@thomashutson lol her father was Earl and he was millionaire, her mother was also millionaire and so was her stepfather.
When Diana was 18 she received inheritance from her great-grand mother, from which she was able to bought 3 bedroom flat in London's posh area.

Man ! The hounding and difficulty with the photographers started at the beginning. I didn't know that. I thought it got worse over the years, but according to this...it began the minute the press found out she was dating the Prince of Whales.
Yes and from day one she asked for help or some kind of assistance from her new family, but was not given it. Later on, she at least had bodyguards, but in the early years she was on her own. Hard to comprehend being followed everywhere from the age of 19 for the rest of her life.

It was the first time the world got news that a Prince was going to get married... A wedding a whole world watcged in awe. Of course they wanted to see the future princess. She wasn't prepared, no one was prepared, how much.
THE H.R.H. COMMS TEAMS WANTED this "innocent little princess" to be swarmed..NOTHING HAPPENS IN THE H.R.J. WORLD that isnt planned.

She did try to back out of it all. Father and sisters all talked her out of it.
True. At the same time, Diana was very young when she married. An older woman might have just refused to show up at the wedding, but she could not defy her father and, especially, her sister Sarah, who in many ways had more authority over Diana than their mother.
