I like basements tier lists a good bit, I think he adds enough useful information to make up for potentially being harsh (and I think that level of harsh is perfectly justified when someone is representing their opinion as reflective of science as a whole, thats gonna open you up to a higher scrutiny. Especially if you are using "does it feel good" as one of your core metrics). Also love talon fitness lol

  • @BasementBodybuilding
    @BasementBodybuilding 2 месяца назад +195

Yeah maybe a little harsh, but overall I think his tier lists are solid and have a positive impact on lifters. I’ve noticed in recent years nobody really questions Jeff, whether it’s his followers or other creators. He has a solid reputation for good reason, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be wrong. I’ve also noticed the people that actually do critique him, generally have no critiques outside of “he’s a science nerd” etc, which is a bit of a lackluster argument lol.
There are quite a few instances in his tier lists where his own criteria and his rankings just don’t line up at all, and I think that’s worth pointing out. Particularly making the stretch a huge point of emphasis in the criteria, but misusing it in the actual ranking, plus some resistance profile confusion on top of that. I do completely understand not being able to cover everything for each lift in one video though, especially if he’s trying to keep it a little more compact, so can’t fault him on that.
And personally, I like to approach my channel with an emphasis on the “why” not just the “what”. You can tell people what to do, but if someone actually wants to understand it, that won’t be enough. That’s the biggest problem in the fitness industry imo. But of course that’s hard to do in a

Shoutout to Talon, he is a great guy and really engages with his community. He has blown up recently and its well deserved.
I may be biased but this tier list is probably the best around. I think an honest discussion of bias and training bent needs to be at the start of any content so the viewer can understand the perspective guiding the choices.
I was just watching a Science-focused meta list and it had all the Noble Natties stuck in A tier because all their information was experience based, which showed major bias imo. The bias was never described other than handwaving as "not science based" which is a little too narrow minded for me; even as someone who does research professionally.

Bald Omni-Man is maybe the most balanced guy in the game. He does a great job of incorporating various sources of information and distilling it into need to know bullet points. He's a strength coach and is strong as hell, so he can relate to the "just horse big weight" crowd, but ultimately he's interested in hypertrophy.
You can be granular on certain topics as long as it's adding to the discussion and bringing in tidbits. As a fairly advanced lifter myself, I don't need to hear the same facts regurgitated 100x over. I want nuance and discussion.
Alex Leonidas has also entered this realm. He's evolved so much throughout the time I've been following him, continued growing his channel after the sad hit job some tried to put on him a few years back (Dairyland Strength, where you at? Lol).
Geoff, you'd move into that tier for me as well if you put out more content about advanced training techniques.
Basement, NH, Shethar are maybe more niche. Depends on my mood and focus.
I also have to shout out 3DMJ who have been putting out more content as of late. Jeff Alberts and Alberto Nuñez both put out a good deal of stuff about their specific training.
Milo is still getting his legs under him. I understand that some people don't like his style, and he can be a bit pedantic at times, but I like that he conveys the latest research. Menno Henselmans is also in that category for me, but he includes a lot more general fitness topics and science communication.
As for enhanced guys, Dr. Mike is still great. I know he's gotten some flack lately, but he's still great. Eric Janicki has also been fun to watch recently, he brings that enhanced enthusiasm with a lot of evidence based principles and anecdotal takes. His stuff is applicable to naturals as well.

15:52 I call BS here Geoff , basement wasn't harsh at all , actually he was too lenient for my taste.
Jeff tier list might have been OK overall , especially for begginers ( most his videos are targeting beginners and he generaly does a good job on setting them on the right path ) but he gives really shity information for any intermediate and I emphasize the shity very heavily ( just watch the portion where he ranked rack pulls for example ) and Jeff tends to make very dumb statements and videos at some time ( he wanted to show only lengthened partials on pull ups and then proceeds to do the portion of the movement where the lats are not even engaged , this is completely horrible advice and i saw 0 calling him out despite millions of people watching his videos ).
Jeff needs to be called out when he is wrong and gives BS advice , especially him because he influences millions of people and generally the higher the subscribers and views the more scrutiny people need to held to.

The biggest issue with Jeff's tier lists is not even the exercises within the tier list, but the way he has conceived the structure of the tier lists themselves. Simply put, they are far from being "science-based" in so many regards.
First off, the 3 criteria. Why even these 3 criteria in the first place?
Strength & tension and ease of progress are reasonable, the "feel-good" factor, more less so.
But why just these three? Why not 2? Why not more than 3? There's no justification given on this whatsoever.
Personally, I'd keep the first two and add things like skill demand and induced overall fatigue, because these factors will help put more context into how exercise will fit within a cohesive, sound program (more on this later).
Okay. Let's assume Jeff's three criteria are what they are. Now, how much relative weight do you give for each of them? Surely, the standard has to be consistently applied across all exercises for a fair assessment. But alas, there's not even a mention of this in any of his videos, and not surprisingly, this is a major source of inconsistency in how Jeff ranks the exercises.
The last criticism I have is that these body-part tier lists fail to take in all the factors required for structuring an optimal hypertrophy program for your entire body. Sure, if your sole goal is to build bigger arms, just go to the arms tier list and do all the S-tier and few A-tier exercises. But most hypertrophy enthusiasts also want to train backs, arms, chest, shoulders, abs, legs, and everything in between.
Here's a corny analogy. In COD, there are typically only few guns that are considered "meta," and often it's the guns with the best overall balance in the key attributes like recoil control, damage, and mobility. The best gun may not rank #1 in all three categories, but may be good across the board, while some low tier guns may be extremely good in one attribute while lacking severely in others.
I don't think this scenario is that uncommon when it comes to exercise selections.
For example, deadlifts often rank poorly on both the back and the legs department. But it undoubtedly is one of those biggest-bang-for-your-buck hypertrophy exercises with great versatility.
Perhaps unwittingly, even Jeff Nippard himself knows this. Because why would he include TWO deadlift exercises in his "The Perfect Leg Day" video, instead of filling it with strictly his "S-tier" leg movements only?
