    I remember being 16 and wandering into a huge hangar bay at Woodstock 99 to watch a movie (as Sony had made a HUGE theater out of it). It was called "Stop Making Sense" and some guy walks onto stage with a boombox. I was waiting for a half hour for some plot to happen and then I just fell into the experience. What an interesting excursion from an already interesting event. Was just trying to get out of the hot sun for a minute but I'm glad I stumbled in there!!

    I was always a fan of Talking Heads as a young lad in the early 1980’s. I had never seen this film but all this time it was always on the back of my brain. A few years ago, I watched it on Tubi or somewhere. I was blown away. What a musician. What an entertainer. What a performance. Just incredible. At the same time I felt, they don’t make music or entertainers like this anymore. This is art on multiple levels and it’s live and in person. Just beautiful and amazing. Oh!! And I’ll bet a ticket to this show cost $20 cash (maybe even less!) and you could pick one up at the same record store where you got all of your cassettes. 😞

    • @cjsdizzy
      @cjsdizzy 9 месяцев назад +26

      I agree that there are a lot of things that change for the worse over time, but it is 150% just untrue that "they don't make musicians and entertainers like this anymore" the sad truth is there are even more multi talented artists then there ever has been, that bring something truly magical and original to the stage or the screen or just to your face on the street, they just get over looked or straight ignored because of the over saturation and lowered attention span of modern day. But the will and work of truly genius and passionate artists is something that will never be gone, even as AI starts infringing on art, the people like him will always keep doing what they do, we just have to keep finding it.

      i'll have to agree with cjsdizzy over here, it's easy to discredit current generations of artist based on the greatest artist of other decades, but that's only because there's so many different people doing so much stuff nowadays. then there's this whole thing about each generation having different sensibilities and trends.
      i'm personally quite happy to have been born in the early 2000's, i might not get to enjoy going to some real historic landmarks like this show, but i get to enjoy nonetheless, just as well as every new and amazing thing that's coming out.

    Tonight I saw the screening at AMC IMAX on 42 St in NYC. Really great. I lived in the East Village in early 80’s. You can’t help but move watching this and we applauded after songs. There was a live Q&A after with Spike Lee and David, Jerry, Chris & Tina from the TIFF. You could cut the tension with a knife. They really don’t like David. From what I’ve read, he was very hurtful to them. Spike kept trying to pump it up shouting questions at them. They were overwhelmed seeing on a big screen. They answered questions as best they could. Then they took questions from audiences all over the world & the first was from my hometown Chattanooga!! I’ve lived in NYC many years. What are the chances? They are great artists. It was a great band but not very easy to be in.

      Talking Heads are popular among people who weren't even born during their run. This may sway David Byrne to change his mind.

    A friend of mine was working as a stagehand at an open air theater in the early 80s before the Talking Heads were a huge deal and he described how before their concert they had to hang a mercury vapor street light over the stage and one guy was given a cue to plug it in after David Byrne walked out onto the dark stage and set down a boombox, and hit play to start the drum track.
    The vapor light flickered to life and the concert started. At one point the stagehands thought Byrne was being electrocuted because he started shaking so violently but it was all part of the act . they had no idea what the group was about at that point

    This is a great trailer as it evokes the style and spirit of the original 1984 trailer, and adds some appropriate flourishes too. Trailers for remastered re-releases usually just feel like someone's thrown it together at home with a load of fades to black between shots and some slapped on captions.

    Two of my best friend’s showed this to me after moving out at 18. We didn’t have any WiFi in our shared flat for the whole year of living together but we did have stacks of dvd’s from each other’s homes and a weed man who lived below us. Every night was an education and the night we watched this together will always be one of the greatest nights that I’ll ever remember!
