I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, I’d suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.

As a child of St. Louis, this video has a great diplomatic overview of the culture here, but of course ymmv. The cliquishness and high school question are just a local flavor version of human nature's way people relate to each other. Do not fear or try to fully understand it, just be aware, and avoid burning bridges crossed and uncrossed. I suggest if you are coming in as an "outsider", leave all your pretensions and perspectives behind, don't define people lest they define you, be respectful and diplomatic and openly seek and embrace what is good here. Save your lectures whatever they may be, and you'll find most decent people pleasant and amicable, at least on the surface, until you find the social connections you desire. 🙂

That's a very good point. Stl isn't perfect, and any city is going to have its weird quirks and things that people say and do! I completely agree about avoid burning bridges. I've had so many encounters with people I didn't think I'd see again, or come to find out we have friends or colleagues in common and I ended up very glad things didn't end on a bad note..

Easier said than done. You have to deal with other outsiders working their way in and up and they might test you, even trip you up. As an expat in Japan it is a struggle for some this way, and I put my hand up too. There are some that come with a fully integrated and prefabricated plan about how to present themselves, and dare I say, they either know that being humble is an art, a very very fine line needs to be understood tactly, or else they profile themselves like a tank covered in velvet. Those that are still working it out are left with the scraps.

As an “outsider” meaning NOT from Missouri - you did a really good job describing how rude and frankly immature grown adults act and judge you or try to “categorize” a person based on where one went to high school. It’s truly unbelievable that people still do this in this day and age. 🤯 guess it’s all those people that peaked in high school and just can’t move on?? If they ever do leave and find out it’s not like that elsewhere in this big world, maybe that’s why they feel the need to have to return to their comfort zone or small bubble.

I moved to St Louis from Los Angeles and I've never had someone ask me where I went to high school. Overall, I'd say the move was a good experience. It's a lot more affordable than anywhere in Southern California but difficult to make friends as an adult when you know no one in the area. That might be the driving force to eventually leave but I've only been here for 5 months so anything can happen.

I think the STL area may have more beautiful scenery, hiking, golf, etc and is definitely more affordable. CHI may have more theaters, clubs, etc. And the lake beaches and waterfront are cool.

Jacob, since you said you're not all that familiar with Southern Illinois, I'll share something with you about Illinois. Housing may be cheaper but the price of gas is way more expensive than in St. Louis. My dad was from Belleville, IL and moved to St. Louis as a working adult and he said even back in the 1950s, the gas prices were always more expensive across the river. Guess they have a higher gas tax. I too have lived in other states and I agree about the traffic. St. Louis traffic is manageable.

Thank you for that. I live and work in central west end so it is pretty much the center of the city, but I have pretty much sampled the whole city.
Saint Louis is a mixed bag just as a bag of apples has mix of bad apples and fresh ones. It is imperative to be decisive otherwise the entire bag is a no go before one realizes. Downtown lofts will definitely provide that mid-rise city feel if that’s what you’re looking for. Look closely at the HOA for each building b/c they range in price a lot and some buildings come with more amenities than others -- e.g in-building gym, secure parking, rooftop pool patio & lounge, depending on if you have a strong preference for those aspects of condo living.

I love in the Arnold area. I like it here. Higher taxes but bigger police presence so if you need police they're there pretty quick. Same for paramedics etc. They're pretty quick. I personally like knowing the police are "present". STL is known for crime but Arnold is known more for not putting up with it. Very nice family place to live. You'll find this out when you realize there's not many places to buy. If a place does come up for sale, it's gone quickly. But if you can move here I recommend it.
Personally I don't go into the city. Too much crime.
The whole high school thing is very real. When I moved here I thought is was just them being nice but yeah, they're totally sizing you up. I thought that was odd. But every area has their "thing". People thought I was odd when I moved here because I lived right near Arkansas so had the whole southern accent. So much so that I had to work on my language skills lol. Down there people knew what I was saying. Up here... No idea. We had an accent, slang terms etc. And people weren't necessarily nice or understanding either. But I'm still glad I moved here. I wouldn't change a thing. We have a lot more opportunities and best thing is our children do too. The town we came from was dying and still is. Best move we ever made.

    • @LivingStLouis
      @LivingStLouis  Год назад

I don't know if it's just called something different in Ohio and Texas but the personal property tax is a pretty big tax compared to title & registration fees in Missouri. There's sales tax when you register the car, and then personal property tax gets charged every year you own the car on Jan 1. For a $50k car personal property tax is likely gonna be somewhere between $1100 to $1400 depending on where in MO you live.

I wouldn't recommend anyone moving here, St Louis is a great place to live if you love being homeless in the street. There's no jobs here, you will not find any meaningful work here. The city used to be a really vibrant place with some of the best night clubs in the country. Now its a dilapidated, crime ridden dump. St Louis county aint much better. I hope and pray it changes for the better, but the economy here is totally dead, crime is a serious problem, and the lack of work opportunities just exacerbates things. Its not safe to live here, I wont even walk the streets in many parts of St Louis today. Its sad too, this was the greatest place to live when I first moved here in the 90's. I lived the American dream here long ago, that dream is long gone.

In the 1930s -1940s most people lived within the city limits the question would not only point out younr neighorhiod, but could also tell whether or not you were likely to be Catholic, st the city had an extensive catholic school sytem

Expect cops to be monumentally ignorant stopping you, harassing you just coming out of a restaurant or simply walking down the street. Unreal.

STL in a nutshell - "If you are from here, you are one of us and you are welcome. If you are NOT from here, you will NEVER be one of us. Get out!" When I moved to STL in 1990, it was known for having the most corp. headquarters per capita of any U.S. city. Those days are long gone. Southwestern Bell moved to Texas because the executives (even the CEO) were made to feel so unwelcome in STL. Yes, you are still judged by what private Catholic high school you attended. Not Catholic? Get out!

Everything you need to know about moving to St Louis? You needed a 17 minute video to say "Don't "? That's just inefficient.

Hmmm that wasn’t the intended takeaway for this video but I’ll say it depends on your point of view

KC outshines STL which is sad. Imagine going from being #4 in America to #2 in Missouri. Lol

Don’t get me wrong I love KC, great midwest city… Go Chiefs! But outshine STL? I don’t know about all that… STL economy culture & politics have solidified it as one of the great American cities. Even despite the decline, It still punches it’s weight as such. Again KC is a beautiful city and has certainly grown up 😊 but still not a fair comparison really. More comparable places for KC would be Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Louisville. Can’t wait to see its continued growth 👍🏾

It definitely depends on where you go, and it can absolutely be tough to find the right social circle. It's something I still struggle with to this day

Too comfortable out there. The state is trash and the traffic is bad. Most people out there drive like they’re drunk lol nah but beyond that, people are so rude out there and there’s no diversity so they know what they only see. 😂
