  • This port report is from Flam, Norway, where we sailed with Holland America Cruise Line. We cover the port basics and our experience touring this small jumping off point to the “Norway In A Nutshell”. We cruise an all-electric ship from Flam to Gudvangen along the narrow and beautiful Naeroyfjord. Back in town, we then take the Flamsbana Railway to the mysterious waterfall of Kjosfossen, then to the top at Myrdal. We cover your options at port as well, such as the Emobilty car rental service and the Flam Railway Museum. Let’s get the lowdown!

The Port Lowdown offers detailed and fun video guides for cruise ports and destinations, helping independent, budget-minded travelers save time and money. We found that many videos lack the details we needed, such as parking, restrooms, available services, and even sidewalk quality. We act as your “port scout”, providing first-hand reports on essential information that others overlook; our videos cover port terminals, independent excursions, goods, services, transportation and even ship tours. With time ticking away during your port visit, we understand the importance of sound planning to make every moment count. Let us give you the Lowdown!

I assume you can't rent a bike and take it on the Flam railway? So you could ride back from the top?

I took the scenic " tourist" train, but there was also a local commuter train. I'm not sure, but they seem to allow bikes on the local commuter trains. I'd check with both the Flam railway and standard rail line sites. Good question! I didn't notice any bikes on the tourist train I took.

OMG, great video. Glad I came across your video. We'll be in Flam on a cruise and we booked our excursions a few weeks ago the exact itinerary like yours (ferry ride in the morning and train in the afternoon. Any tips or advices once we get off the ferry? And also any tips or advices once our train reaches the destination? Thank you

Thanks! When we exited the ferry, I noticed a small Viking village across the bridge. A nice walk around, but that's about it, then we took the bus back.
As far as the train goes, you just stay on the train for a round trip back, unless you want to take a small hike in the area and get the next train. You may need to check the conditions of the ticket.

@@ThePortLowdown thank you. We'll stay on the train to avoid any issue with the tickets. We actually don't have time and we need to get back before the cruise ship leaves without us. So if you sit on the right hand side of the train, you will also sit on the tight hand side coming back to see both sides then?

You mean the opposite side? You may not get a chance to switch.. that was my problem. People tend to reserve their spaces, so it matters to get a good seat ahead of time.

@@ThePortLowdown Thanks. We'll be sure to arrive 30 min to grab a good seat before the train departs. I didn't book this with the cruise line and I saw some RUclipsr said the last 4 car on the train is reserved for those who booked with cruise line. People suggested head towards the front of the train.
No, what I meant to say is if you start out sitting on the right side of the train and on the way, you will see the side you haven't seen yet on the way up.

The train, on the return trip, will simply reverse down. So in my case, i got stuck.
