What was your favorite school backpack as a kid? 🎒📚
I didn't have a backpack until college in the mid 80's and it was a basic Jansport. Wish I had hung onto it as they are totally back in fashion. All the packs on your list are nice, but a little pricey for the average kid (parent). Maybe do a video with budget options. Thanks!
Jansport! I didn't have a backpack until university either. I went to boarding school and since we just walked across the way to the classroom building there was no need for lockers or even backpacks!! But at uni I just wanted to "fit in". I had a basic Jansport, it had a leather bottom and I put about 20 (flare) buttons on it! I had it throughout undergraduate well into my graduate studies. I didn't hold on to mine, I'm sure I've donated it along the way and I, too, wish I would have held on to mine. I don't even think I kept those buttons!?!
I had a L.L.Baen backpack for school
JanSport... i still have the one i bought when I started high school.... im about to fihish uiniversity and its still good!
As I'm currently in high school, my favorite is osprey daylite plus, but im thinking of getting the arcane large.
My sense is that high school and college students (and their parents) tend to want less expensive backpacks. The ones you highlighted are more geared towards tech bros, IMHO. I am surprised that you guys didn't even give lip service to the trusty JanSport line of backpacks. Also, water bottle pockets on the sides don't seem to be the "in" thing right now, but everyone I know still wants one. Including my college-age daughter.
You’ve got to stay hydrated 😃 Thank you for your insights, Jeanne!
-Eric
I'm in highschool and I could not live without a water bottle, so a bottle pocket is always a must for me
Cool to see another face on the channel! I used a classy hello kitty messenger bag from hot topic in middle school. College I went with the classic jansport bag. It still exists now. You can’t kill them!
You can’t beat those Hot Topic classics 😂 Thanks for sharing. We’ll see you in the next one!
-Eric
That Topo Design bag reminds me very much of my beloved Jansport backpack that has gotten me through college and travel for the last 20 years. That thing is built like a tank! It’s starting to get a little worn now, so the Topo Design bag might be a worthy successor.
You’ll have to let us know if you end up going with it!
-Eric
Which model was it?
this is a great presentation...It would be helpful to know the sizes of the models. I am 6'5" and weigh 300lbs so it helps to see the packs on larger bodies! Keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching, Joshua! If you view the full reviews of products on our site, we list each model’s height and torso size. More reviews: packhacker.com/travel-gear/

The first backpack I remember having was a green JanSport one. Two zippered openings, no organization, just a place to put books, Trapper Keeper, and a hard plastic pencil case. In fact, still have that bag somewhere in my house. The front zipper did break at some point, but that's not bad for the amount of use and abuse it took.
Thanks for sharing your insight! Lots of Jansport love today 😃
-Eric
Jansports seem to last forever.
This was such a great video! Thanks!
Thanks for watching, Rose! 😃
-Eric
The summer before going to College my friend and I were traveling around Boston when I bought my first non-camping backpack from Eastpak, that I used for years well past my College years. Actually, I still have it and it's somewhere in my house stored away.
You should dig it out and see how it performs 😃
-Eric
I have an Aer City Pack and if you are the type to carry around textbooks you will not like the backpack. Last semester the City Pack was good to me as my classes didn’t require textbooks but this year I do and the max I’ve found is I can stuff my Bio textbook and a few notebooks plus my laptop, and then a pencil case and my lunch bag in the front compartment along with charger and cables for my devices. I find that adding anything else overpacks the backpack and the top hideaway storage pouch becomes utterly useless when packed up all the way.
Could the Aer city pack possibly fit a 15.6 gaming laptop?
What’s the “Bag Design” book that was in a couple of the backpacks?
Nice bags!
Thanks for watching 😃
-Eric
Herschel Pop Quiz and Settlement are notable omissions.... Shop sales and these two options are by far more economical than your list.
My very first backpack was some cute tiny one I can't really remember, but my very first backpack that I had to get because of its durability was a JanSport I think with a rubber bottom. Lol. My first year of high school, my bags kept tearing and I finally got that one bag to hold my heavy books. 😆 The bottom looked like a tire, but it finally worked. 👍
In College I had various messenger bags but my very first bag purchased because I had a laptop was a Bellroy one strap bag, so sleek and pretty, still have it but done with College lol. Currently living to hike, travel and becoming more minimal I'm loving my new blue Osprey 24/series backpack idk what exactly it's called but loving it.
Wow, thanks for all your detailed insights, Mel! Loads of folks started with a humble Jansport, then transitioned into something different.
-Eric
I dont know why, but you guys always seem to post videos that I'm searching for exactly when I need them. Im headed to college this year and I was looking all over for recommendations but still cant seem to find a bag that I feel works for me.
You’re in the right place! It’s hard to decide when it comes to a piece of gear you’re going to use every day for a few years. Check the full reviews on our site for more packs that might work for you! packhacker.com/travel-gear/
-Eric
this might be a weird request, but can you do a video on accessory/makeup bags? i was curious about the glossier beauty bag since it seems great with all the organizing qualities of the pouch, but im not sure if this is a unique feature in these types of pouches. thanks so much!!!!!!
Thanks for the suggestion 😃 I’ll pass it along!
-Eric
The Osprey Arcane XL might be better for students than the Arcane Large featured here because it has a separate padded laptop compartment in the back, large main compartment, organization compartment, quick access pocket in the front, and water bottle pockets on the sides.
Thanks for your input 😃 It will depend on how much you need to carry each day.
-Eric
Yes, that's why there are so many options available.
New sub here. Just came across your videos when I'm looking for the best backpack for school and office. Some of the backpack brands are not available here..😂😂😂. Nice video though. How i wish we have the second brand, Topo, here. It's so damn beautiful ❤❤❤
Thanks for watching! 😃
-Eric
Yes water bottle holder was only featured in one back pack in the video, I’m willing to pay more for a quality backpack so I appreciate them highlighting backpacks they recommended.
Thanks for sharing your insights! 🤙
-Eric
I would love to see a video about the Linus Tech Tips backpack!
Thanks for the suggestion 😃 I’ll pass it along.
-Eric
I would love to see a review of the Von Holzhausen classic backpack in that Technik Leather that they have. I have other accessories from them that are pretty amazing...but that backpack is in that classic design and it's in a vegan leather that is also supposedly crack resistant and water resistant and 1/3 the weight of leather. I've never ever seen a review of it and it looks so sassy and grown up!
Thanks for the suggestion, Jen! I’ll pass it along to Lauren 😃
-Eric
can you review the new linus tech tips bag plssssssssss.
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll pass it along.
-Eric
Has PackHacker seen the new Linus Tech Tips tech bag coming out just now? It's on the heavy end but it's designed to be a ruthlessly durable bag for tech EDC. Linus said in a podcast recently that he's open to review collabs. LTT has a pretty big following so it could be a great way to get some growth to PH too (my two favorite channels!)
Thanks for the suggestion 😃 I’ll pass it along.
-Eric
JanSport ❤
wait i thought there would be north face borealis, but these are all super awesome too and now I have a decisionphiobia
Which one is your favorite? 🧐
-Eric
Aer city pack is the best
What do you like most about the City Pack?
-Eric
I love the look, the way it fits, and how slim/compact it is. The internal organization is great. It fits everything I need without extra space.
Thanks for the insights, Jonathan!
-Eric
Great school bags - back in the days when I went to school we didn't have such things at all, everybody had a good old ugly leather bag weighting tons and keeping for generations ... ;-) They were really ugly and I guess if I would have the choice now which leather school bag to grab I would go for any randoseru, one of these beautiful traditional Japanese leather school bags. I really love their great look as well as their practibility. Just the price is incredible, at least for the ones made from real leather ...
That said, most probably my choice for a school bag would not be leather at all. Neither one of those in the video (sorry). I would surely choose both of those rucksacks which I use now as daypack, travel bag, hand luggage etc. - my two favourites are since many years the undestructable Burton Kilo 27 liter bagpack (in the original version, not the 2.0 model) and the astonishing light weight Salewa Chip 22 liter rucksack. Both in black, of course ;-)
And why both? Well, one rucksack is never enough, so for full day or heavy use in the morning I would take the Burton, but for the light work in the afternoon the Salewa. ;-D
Thanks for the detailed insights, as always! We’re spoiled with options these days, making it harder to choose. When there’s only one option, it’s easy! 😆
-Eric
@@PackHacker hahaha, yes Eric, and luckily we have your channel to spoil us with always more of these great options 🤣
We’re happy to provide that! 😂 Hope you’re having a great day!
-Eric
i definitely would have liked to see more budget friendly bags, and bags w anti-theft features for students that take public transport. otherwise good video. just not necessarily 'college' bags
Thanks for the suggestion, Ari! 😃 I’ll pass it along.
-Eric
The only ones I had was L.L.Bean
What color was yours? 😀
-Eric
Do the monos metro
Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll pass it along.
-Eric
😎👍🏻
🤙
Nice bags, but not one of these looks big enough to carry the books I had to lug around in college.
A lot of courses have gone digital-but if you still have many books, there are options for that! 😃
-Eric
Batac can't support weight of middle sch kids books, puts a lot of strain on zippers. It's better as a hiking or sightseeing day pack. One of my kids is using a kanken laptop bag for the past 2 years but I absolutely hate the narrow bottle pockets that limit the brands that can fit. The other is using a Decathlon brand bag which is dirt cheap but doesnt have much structure, I'm surprised it is lasting more than a year of abuse.
Why everythings so expensiveee aaaaa
a totto backpack :')
Why don't any of these have room for your lunch bag?
Only 4 of those had water bottle pockets? Yikes.
Fjllraven kanken
Main advice, please don’t overload your bag. No one needs to slog around with 90lbs on your spine.
Great call 😃 Thanks for watching!
-Eric
No mention of padding in the back or the fit/comfort of the straps when loaded with heavy books… not very useful review sorry
pretty disappointed y'all didn't include chrome's naito pack. 😒 shame on you.
So many bags, so little time.
-Eric
calm down...there are tons of bags, no one cares about a random bag that you happen to like.
@@blushihtzu you got some heavy simpish white knight energy, bruh. pretty sure there was no need for you to come rushing to pack hacker's defense over a stranger's opinion about a BACKPACK. 🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ lmao.
@@blushihtzu and i clearly liked their comment. 🙄
Straps look uncomfortable, has minimal padding for the laptop, no water bottle pockets, etc...
Hey! Don’t forget that Jesus Christ loves you and he died for you have a blessed day❤️ ❤️
