What features do you look for in a good travel backpack?

    • @KandarpXJani
      @KandarpXJani 3 года назад +9

Where to begin, I think few, if any, really nail this.
      1. Water bottle pocket
      2. Separate shoe compartment
      3. Clamshell opening
      4. Dedicated laptop and tablet compartment
      5. Tech/admin compartment
      6. Quick access pockets
      7. Quick grab handles top and side
      8. Length front pocket (like the CPL one)
      9. Aquaguard YKK Zippers
      10. Xpac or water resistant materials
      11. Bright inner lining
      12. Hidden pockets for passport etc.
      13. Expandability would be a plus
      14. Sternum and removable hip straps
      15. Lockable zippers
If anything comes remotely close to this, it's the Aer Travel Pack 2 imo, but I'd love to hear if you think there are alternatives PH team!

Lightweight, not too many dangly straps, enough organization to be my “purse” through an airport, but not too much since I want the space for plenty of items. A laptop sleeve is nice, although my iPad is always in a case anyway. An external fold-away water bottle pocket is very good.

I like the looks of all these backpacks (especially the Belroy), but my one true love is my Jansport backpack I got in college. That thing has been through it all and still holds up after nearly 20 years of use. And with all the souvenir patches on it, it's easy to tell it's mine if it has to get checked for some reason.

2022 travel warning! If you’re taking a plane to or within Europe, airline agents can stop you from using any of these bags as a personal item, if you also have another carry-on compliant bag. They are all too big to qualify as a personal item. So be prepared to gate check your main carry-on and the backpack will effectively become your new carry-on. You might be charged € for it. I’ve travelled a few times these year, and seen it happen, especially on smaller city-hopper style connections. I now bring a personal item no bigger than 10L and max 80cm total length of added dimensions (such as a small briefcase or sling bag).

@@SteezyG the lumbar pocket? That's only a passport or wallet pocket. The top one eats into the space. A few tips from an infrequent but often traveler. 1. Wear “ loafer” like shoes, no sandals or flip flops , easy to slip off n on at security but protect you feet . 2. Wear a light jacket with pockets. 3. Buy a travel blanket put it in easily accessible pocket in your carry-on. 4. Get bottle of Mio ( or store brand) to squirt in your water bottle, it has vitamins and will kill the metallic taste of plain water.

I love travel backpacks (Topo Core Pack!) but I'm quickly learning how fucking much it sucks to be disabled. Half the capacity will always be prescriptions and toiletries, so I only get half the clothes and gear now and basically have to give up on minimalism/ultralight/easy carry.

@@arijeanz it really sucks! What regular people can get away with for a week, 3 shirts and 3 pants, I have to double up even more on wear items. Even though I overheat a lot, I try for a mid layer to take most of the noticeable wear. You just learn to give up cute outfits and extras like hats or superfluous tech.

Paul Ho, I hear you. I travel with a CPAC machine. I'm also the guy carrying the battery banks for the mobile devices, the surge protector, the power extension cord, the spare power cables for the mobile devices, the first aid kit for the family, and anything else my wife can't fit in her bag(s). Then there is the toiletries, the extra shoes, and a dozen outfits I won't ware but have to take "just in case" changes her mind on what we will be doing while travelling.
I don't know what is worse. Being disabled or being married when it comes to packing for travel. Back in my younger days, I could get away with a average run of the meal back pack. These days, my "pack" is a standard military tactical bag and is bulging to the point it looks like I'm preparing for war. God I miss the days when all I did was throw in some travel toiletries, some T-shirts, shorts, a spare set of shoes, and a couple of changes of under garments. Back then I doubt the backpack even weighted 20 lbs.

As I have gotten older, one of the things I find absolutely is a must have in a travel backpack is a strap to go across the chest. Why? Because the bigger you are, the more likely it is that the shoulder straps will dig into your underarms making for a very uncomfortable carry. With the chest strap, it pulls the shoulder straps inward, taking the stress and the friction off your under arms.
I'll be the first to admit this probably isn't an issue for somebody who is slender build, but be broad shouldered and the absolute last thing you want to do is throw a backpack on your back.

I am super surprised that the Knack backpack is not more prominently featured on a lot of these packing channels. I have the medium size and I travel with it just for work, one-night stays and 3-night stays. I'm not even using packing cubes etc to be more efficient. The only thing I had an issue with was the lack of a pass through opening to put it over the handle of a rollaway. However, I believe they fixed that in the latest version. I compared it to the minaal, aer, peak and topo designs and liked it better than all four. The last thing I would say is that it has held up really well over domestic and international travel.

These suggestions won't work and never work for both travel and work. On subway, I have to remove my backpack (but who wants to let backpack touch the floor especially during wet days).

I think Tortuga carries women's specific bags for shorter torsos. Might be worthwhile checking out their selection. If you don't mind a hiking bag vibe Osprey carries a couple of XS daypacks, I just purchased one. At 5'0" (with the hair) I totally empathize.

Great video, as usual! Curious: which backpacks would be your top choices for a short torso? Use for 2, 3, 4-day trips for relaxed visits to lake, sea, or forest. The longest I can go: 18-18.5H (I'm 5'6"). My goal: sleek, functional, comfortable, urban, well-made, Hate fussy, floppy, businessy, touristy, loud logos, back-to-school vibe, girlie (though I'm a 62-year-old woman). Note: I'm a notorious, last-minute packer, which means I take too much.
My bags run the gamut. I used my TB Synik 22 on a recent trip but it proved to be too tight. The overflow ended up in TB zippered shopping tote. So if nothing suits, I'm open to adding a duffle (the TB Yeoman would have been a good companion but it's sold out). TB says the Synik 30 and Synapse 25 are too long and the Brain Bag too much bag. I'm a TB bag fan due to their functionality (love the new edgeless straps) but open to other brands. I know some aren't fans of TB look, but I dig it and their customer service is superb.
I have a Sanction but find it uncomfortable. It's a bit heavy (as is my Buffalo 19 Conceal), hits my back in the wrong spot and I'm not a fan of top-loaders. My Evergoods CPL24 V2 also proved to be tight (love their sleek aesthetic and that their bags ride high and hug my back).
Gotta be black, gotta have secure/dedicated 13" laptop compartment. I was told to look at the Bellroy Transit. Not usually a fan of their products. I find them too feminine and back to school-ish (same goes for Topo). Their thin sternum straps aren't my cup of tea, nor is their aesthetic but maybe it's a winner?
In advance, thanks so much for your ear and wisdom.

Hey there! My recommendation would be to look for bags that have multiple torso sizes. Brands with roots in the outdoor industry (like Osprey) tend to have smore specific sizing options. Hope this helps!

I'm often on business trips with a duration of 1-3 days. The procedure is always the same: Arrival on Day 1, meetings wich the customer(s) on Day 2, travel back on Day 2 or Day 3. Actually i'm using the Nomatic Backpack, full expanded for the travalling and compressed (for a professional look suitable to the suit) for the meeting. But, the Nomatic Backpack has some issues: It's heavy (the backpack it self) and fully expanded bulky and not realy compftable.
So I'm looking for an alternative, but all these Backpacks in the Video seems to be to big for a professional look (Day 2). Did you have a tip for me?
And btw i'm fully pissed on Nomatic: A zipper is broken i want to contact them a few weeks ago. But the website shows only following: "SERVICE NOT AVAILABLE IN YOUR COUNTRY" (same message in Austria and Germany, i've tried in both countries), because (citation) "we plan to create a new brand specific to Europe and will be launching in the coming months". Well, nice for them but as existing customer it's nevertheless a pretty unpleasant situation 😟

Pre-Covid we were looking for a professional backpack/briefcase for my husband. He wanted one with a hipbelt (at the time he would travel with 2 laptops) and that could also be carried briefcase style, with hideaway straps and side carry handle. We were settling on the Tom Bihn TriStar when business travel collapsed, and now with remote work he probably won't need that type of bag anymore. But it's definitely worth checking out.
