Small thing: You can also kick Gman to get an ending where he feeds you to a gonome. If you brought Wilson the entire way, the post-credits scene has him save you.
Also if you bring Wilson to the upload station then in the second ending Wilson saves you from being tortured which is probably whats leading to a third game.
choosing to take wilson with me didn't feel like a difficult extra side objective, like the gnome chompsky achievement. it felt more like a binary moral choice like, for instance, saving the little sisters in Bioshock. it really isn't hard to bring wilson with you, since you can just plant him on top of the APC. i did it on my first run and i'm doing it now on my second. it kinda just feels like the way the game was meant to be played. (especially since it's how you get the good ending)
A very subtle way the game shows 3650 slowly warming up to Wilson is in the various hidden dialogues he has for if Wilson dies. If he dies very early on, 3650 is completely unfazed, but each time you find a new scenario where you could kill Wilson, 3650’s reactions slowly gain more passion. Like, if you get him killed right before the first transport station (the pool of water you used on the roller mines), then 3650 will be very upset, but still get over it. And then, cut to a while later, when you’re fighting through the ice caves, if Wilson dies here, 3650 references Metal Gear Solid, and absolutely loses his sh*t at Wilson’s loss. It takes like 75% of the game for Wilson to eventually crack through 36’s shell, but he does eventually warm up to him. I suppose there might be something about making the active choice of bringing Wilson along (even if it was initially as a precaution in case he forgot about any other doors), must have subconsciously made him more willing to open up, since just spending time with Wilson alone doesn’t seem to be enough to help him, since Clone Cop spent god knows how long with Wilson, and he couldn’t have cared less. I suppose it’ll be up to Pyrocynical to delve deeper into the possible psychology of this aspect of the game, when he eventually makes his review of this in 12 decades.
The virgin gnome chompsky -no contribution to plot -it’s only purpose is to give you an achievement -doesn’t talk -can’t be dangerous (unless you throw him with gravity gun) -just a f*cking garden decoration The chad Wilson -opens doors for you -contributes a lot to the plot -helps 3650 in character development -can talk -advance guard turret made by scientific research facility
I'd say this is closer to a Opposing Force 2, seing as how we play as the enemy faction. But the amount of content, lenght and fleshing out, really bring it to Episodic-quality.
The xen grenades are even a great evolution of the original black hole gun. They do both functions of that weapon at the same time (giving you some spare gear and removing enemies instantly) without breaking the pacing by making you go to xen.
Technically it's actually three boss fights if you count the Gonome, and the Rebels in this mod are also pretty competent now since they can now melee and use grenades, which they couldn't do in vanilla Half-Life 2, rather than just having jetpack abilities and can occasionally switch to a secondary weapon if you kick their main weapon out of their hands. And Combine Soldiers jump around in this mod, but not nearly as much as in Mmod which is fine because Mmod makes the Combine Soldiers ridiculously OP unless you have the mounted pulse turret in your inventory. But there's also four endings, one of which is a secret if you kick Gman instead of the main node for 3650 or Aiden Walker since that's his real name according to the prologue. Anyway this mod does feel like an actual continuation for Half-Life 2, even though the devs said it doesn't have any correlation to Half-Life Alyx, but it's still amazing. And they said they're thinking of doing an EZ3 but that's probably going to take longer than EZ2 which is fine by me.
I love the inspiration taken from Black Mesa and Half Life Alyx, as well as portal 2. It really feels like it ties all the half life universe together. It also doesn't take it's main characters and story seriously, which is good, because if they actually tried to make it serious like half life 2, it'd almost definitely end up being edgy fan fiction. It allows it's "serious" story telling to just be the world building taking place in the environment, which being inspired by the previously mention games, is really good.
The Aperture grenades were inspired by a cut weapon from Episode 1 called the Vortex Hopwire Grenade, which essentially does the same exact thing. Cool little fun fact that not a lot of people know about surprisingly.
