I always thought that Adam Cole had a decent superkick. Miyu Yamashita and her skull kick was a pretty cool variation. Chris Adams is certainly number 1 though.
Lance Storm's superkicks were ugly. He always bent over far too much, half the time his hand ended up touching the canvas to stop himself from falling over. So he looked like he was just falling over backwards rather than actually kicking. Also his standing foot would be positioned the wrong way, his toes should be facing perpendicular to the body to reduce the chances of injury and to increase power, but they would be facing opposite to the opponent (usually due to the balancing issues I mentioned).
@@Yungnuty You should write him a strongly worded letter. You clearly know more about how to execute the move than one of the greatest technical wrestlers.
I only tale a few superkicks serious. Example Shawn. He can repeat it 3 times in a match but the kick that brings the win. Always sounds feels looks and work differently. The issue not only many do a superkick. But they do it without build up, distance and nobody sells it at all. If you get superkicked for real you are falling and staying down for a while. Heck maybe jaw or neck damage.
I've been a casual wrestling viewer since the Attitude Era and never really super into it. But let me tell you, Stevie, I'm a huge fan of your show. This is really well done. I mean all of it. I'm always looking forward to your next episode.
@edwells4769 Not sure if you're honest or trolling. I actually knew a leabian former nun in college. So I know they exist. But openly, and still in seminary? You have me intrigued, assuming what you say is true.
I remember watching Continental Championship Wrestling in the 80s, and they put over Scott Armstrong's superkick by saying he accidentally caught Brad with it and knocked him out for a half hour.
out of all the podcasts with all the wrestlers of old and new. THIS is the best podcast. most human. most normal. no ego, just stevie expressing how he feels is so interesting. keep it up boys!
Very surprised not to see Lance Storm get a mention here. By every metric of criteria, I would've expected him to rate highly. Lance's superkick always looked fantastic, and he was the caliber of worker you could always rely on to work with safety as paramount. In fairness to Stevie, the way that Shawn popularised the move, just about everybody does it nowadays, so I could see how certain workers could easily slip your mind. Even so, I would think for most people, Lance Storm's superkick would stand out from the pack.
Those guys in the back for HBK Super kicking them…15:10 and on…They all sold solid for those HBK SWEET CHIN MUSIC So respect to Stan and the backstage crew 🤜🤜 And HBK TOO 🤜🤜
27:06 and 28:19 is an example of a bad superkick for me. When the guy doing it practically falls over. Shawn Michaels always looked in control of his own body throughout. Although I always felt he looked away too soon.
Man Stevie id love to get a 10 top best finishers list from you i always thought you were underated glad to see you still going good luck on the channel
Ziggler was a bit too obvious with the leg slapping... best part about Shawn Michaels SCM was how well he hid the leg slap. I dont hate the leg slap, the crack! sound is amazing!! But you gotta be more slight of hand.
@edwells4769 Hard to argue with ya, his were extremely obvious. I know it's not a kick, but go watch Kane when he does that uppercut.. with his other arm he's slapping his own chest, it was years before I noticed it.
Chris Adams was before my time but I can see the inspiration for Stevie and Lance Storm. My top 5 would be: Shawn Michaels Lance Storm Dolph Ziggler Stevie Richards (legitimately, not because this is his channel) Adam Cole (even though he doesn't finish anyone with it, I think he hits every other criteria more than anyone else I've watched)
judging by the style of the kick Chris Adams used a Taekwondo style kick hence the skipping in and the turn of the base leg seen in most here like Dolph too.
I'm not sucking up at all here, but the very best superkick I ever saw was Stevie vs Booker T at Insurextion 2001 at Wembley Arena. I was there for it and it was brutal!
With Chris Adams kick, he was renowned as a Judo champion but was trained in a few different martial arts. The sideways stance is how you would do it in several martial arts. The only difference is he appears to pull the impact instead of driving through.
I am so glad that you had Chris Adam's #1 He really was the best at the super kick. He was the 2st person I sae do it ad as finisher. And it really was a work of art
I think 'can do to anyone' does not work for the superkick. It always looked so stupid on guys like Big Show, he would always have to bend over awkwardly to do it.
That's because no one who uses it is actually a martial artist with the dexterity to lift their leg that high. Shawn is more than tall enough to side kick Big Show in the face, but by the time Show was in WWE Shawn had a fucked back and couldn't get his leg up very high anymore. Ziggler is just about tall enough to do it but never had the flexibility to get his leg very high. I used to mess about with my friends by side kicking over their heads just from standing, no wind up. I could have easily got Show without him leaning down, as could just about every other 6 foot plus martial artist. I would love to have seen a legit MMA fighter use it on Big Show, he wouldn't need to lean down, and if he did, he probably wouldn't have walked away from it without being very wobbly.
The way Savannah Jack could extend his long leg to do the superkick was amazing because it looked like he was trying to kick through his opponent's head but it's one of the safest superkicks you'll ever see.
Mick Foley mentioned the need for a finish to be fairly universal in his first book. The Undertaken hadn't been able to use the Tombstone on several guys, Yokozuna the most notable, because they were either larger or heavier than himself. The Stone Cold Stunner, though, can be done all day long to damn near anybody at all.
Chris Adams may be the originator but I'm going with HBK as the best all day every day. Much higher profile. When the Usos and the buckaroos do the super kick they're not imitating Chris Adams. They're imitating Shawn Michaels.
I agree about Big Show's usage in WWE. I hated every time he cried and looked like a big baby. Never got it. He definitely had charisma and was over. But definitely agree he should've been billed as a legit giant.
They made Terry very strong, as expected. Massive corner carry, moves that keeps you in advantage most times, 2 overheads and combos that can deal a ton of damage. The is in the upper tier, no doubt.
Absolutely, it made Shawn look like an absolute chump, being berated by Bret for an age to end the show, with no comeback at all. If it was an accident from Bret, it was very very poor and amateurish by him. Whereas on the other hand if it was intentional it was massively unprofessional. Either way it reflects badly on Bret, in spite of him always portraying himself in a positive way.
Cool video, and Stevie's ace, but one suggestion I have (on the off chance anyone from the show's reading) is that it'd be great to see the moves played at least once, at proper speed, without immediately starting to rewind and replay, pausing etc... It's hard to get a sense of the move (and not just the superkicks, but in some of Stevie's older videos), to feel the impact, to judge the speed etc, without seeing it straight through first.
I hate that modern wrestling turned the sharpshooter and the super kick into special moves instead of finishers. I guess michaels and bret hart just are the only ones to do these moves correctly then
I wonder how Stone Cold feels about his finisher becoming a 2 count bomb now KO is using it? Even Cody doesn't protect his finisher, he has to hit three in a row to win.
Bobby Heenan on commentary made the Barber Shop segment, much like JR and King (plus fat Hogan fan in the front) made that Shelton Benjamin kick that much greater.
Stevie, I knew when you put Shawn at #2 that you were going with Chris Adams at #1. I first saw Chris wrestle at the Olympic Auditorium in 1980. But when he came to the UWF and WCCW he got even better.
Most people put hands up. You're actually trained to do it (at least we were) & I have seen 99% of workers do it. Gunther did it vs Priest at SummerSlam
The end of the video where you’re both looking at each other waiting for an answer. 😂 I remember reading an article from Power Slam Wrestling and it mentioned The Stevie Kick looked a lot better than Shawn’s. That’s when I took note and started looking Stevie Richards’ matches
I think that stiff kick from Shawn on Rock, was after they already had issues backstage. So I guarantee it pissed Rock off more, than if they were on good terms.
Gentleman Chris Adams….. first to popularize the super kick and his super kick actually was a finisher and not soemthing you could kickj out of 15 times in a row. And why was he so good? He was a real Judoka and not just a pro wrestler.
I was kinda upset at first when Shawn was #2 and I said to my self if Chris Adams is not #1 then this list is invalid and then #1 Gentleman Chris Adams I was surprised to see the video with Chris Adams wearing boots I am used to him being barefoot. Great list Stevie.
im going to show my almost 49 years of age, but i knew Chris would be number one. Him and Kabuki had those great "kick vs kick" matches, but his kick was better than Kabuki's thrust respectively. Seemed like Chris was almost decapitating melons at times in wccw. I think Stevie should have put himself on these lists somewhere though.
Strikes were never in Judo, at least for competition. Its always been a wrestling/grappling art. Way back in the day they would sometimes teach kicks and strikes to Purple belts and above, but only for katas, as they were considered too dangerous for competition. I got my black belt when I was 18, and none of my instructors had ever been taught strikes and never taught any to us. If anyone asked they would say "wrong place to learn that stuff"
I was so ready to get pissed off. For some reason this is such an issue with me. Because I'll never understand how people have a conversation about superkicks and not include Chris Adams. I will always think he had the best. So glad he got some respect.
On kick finisher matter, I would have loved Omos to use the kick to the head he did to riddle instead of the classic chokeslam from a giant. That giant leg of his was really intimidating.
Chris Adam super kick was indeed super. It also the most realistic. It came out of nowhere and had some power into it. The way he does the kick is how you would do it in a martial arts environment. He was a champion in Judo and also practice other martial arts. He probably would have been in the UFC had he been younger.
Have you guys not heard the shoot interview of Rocky Johnson, explaining the entire story of HBK and The Rock behind the scenes? Im pretty sure it’s still out there.
Before I see #1 I'm going to guess it's Gentleman Chris Adams. Despite HBK being the only reason I started liking wrestling in my opinion Chris Adams gave the best super kick, but only just.
I think HBK had a prettier superkick but the Gentleman Chris Adams looked like he took your f'n head off with his kick. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either kick. I think Ziggler/Nemeth and Lance Strom have superkicks on par with these legends but the only thing that keeps their kicks out of being in that upper tier is that it wasn't their finish. If HBK keeps using the Teardrop Suplex and only uses his superkick as a setup then I'd easily give the nod to Chris Adams. Thank you Scott Hall for giving us Sweet Chin Music.
Also my favorite superkick is actually Glacier's because I never liked the superkicks where the leg is slightly bent when giving the other guy the kick. It just looks ugly to me. Glacier actually extends his leg all the way straight when doing the Superkick.
100% agree!, Glacier always followed through with his kick, and made It as legit as possible, It's just a shame his character didn't get over like they wanted It too 😔
@@Eeyore209 it's because they made character when the first Mortal Kombat movie was already out and it relevant anymore I believe. Also they just started doing the nwo which was a reality based group and not something based off a video game
I still think Jake's ddt was one of the greatest finish moves of all-time. It was simple, it was fast and you believed it. The stunner is up there too because of the same reason. Rko, definitely
I don't think a superkick has to be a finisher as long as it is established by the wrestler using it that 'my superkick isn't as good as insert wrestler's name here, but I use it to get to x, y, or z'. There still needs to be a reason why you are using the moves you are using, it could be a setup for their actual finisher, for example, but not everything needs to be a finisher just because someone else used it as a finisher. The only exception to this would be the Piledriver, or another move which is considered highly dangerous, these should be finishing matches, full stop.
I find it hard to understand how Adams can be put in front of Michaels in this list, Adams threw a good kick, but probably 70% of the time he stopped just a fraction before where it would look legitimate, making it obviously worked. That wasn't the case for Michaels, where probably 95% of his kicks looked legit. Sorry for others that disagree, but that is reality in my opinion. I would have had both Lance Storm and Haku at least as honourable mentions (I know Samoans is mentioned in general, but I mean specifically Haku).
If you think we missed someone out for honourable mentions, respond to this post with the name and we will update the list in a future episode.

I'm surprised too since I think Stevie worked with Lance in WWE or ECW.

Lance Storm's superkicks were ugly.
He always bent over far too much, half the time his hand ended up touching the canvas to stop himself from falling over. So he looked like he was just falling over backwards rather than actually kicking.

I hate that the superkick went from a guaranteed finish to a transitional move that's spammed 10-15 times in a match.
Agreed. It's a kick to the dang head. That isn't something that should be getting spammed 20 times a night.
It went the way of the DDT sadly. I wonder how many other former finishing moves that later became standard that we can think of.

I can reach the top of the door with my arm if that's any good?
Most popular super kick? Shawn Michaels, hands down. Most technically crisp super kick? Lance Storm.
Big Stevie Cool good super kick
Lance storm
I popped for Stevie popping for the Dean Ambrose sell job.
DDT. Elegant. Beautiful. Simple.
Tom Zenk did a beautiful superkick, and he was a pretty big guy, so could do it to anyone.
