The Mustang II had a better front suspension and steering setup than the early Mustangs, that's for sure. The mistake was putting small wheels and tires on.

@@ponycarresurrection4401 Your'e right, the engineering was junk and they were still manufacturing with thousands clearance on their motors, whileToyota and Honda already moved to much tighter. It was most just a case of horrible management. Many folks have talked about it that worked both factory and office during the 70s. But it was much the same throughout all of U.S. product. It even affected the quality of construction building. The numbers crunchers had taken over running the businesses. They had no concept of keeping consumers nor workers happy or content. They were scum of the earth cutting the bottom line and ruining everything that great management before them had built.

The biggest problem of the mustang ii was the times it was in. No one had real power in those days. Some people have restomoded mustang ii's and they are cool.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have seen some people restomod them and make them look real good. Drop the ride height, more reasonable size tires, less goofy air dam and spoiler. Then they look sharp. At least they have more curves than the fox body & i had an 88 5.0 LX.

Thank you for sharing a little love for the IIs! I learned to drive in my Dad's '78 Mach I. Fun to drive, and the 2800 V6 was a nice little engine. He's still got it, and it's never been driven in snow so it's in great shape. FYI my Mustang is a '68 fastback with a 390GT. The '68s are my favorite, but I also like the IIs because they got back to the original point of the first Mustangs, which was to be a sporty yet economical starter car.

Even though you were all over the map on this, I think you got the point across that the Mustang II was right for the time. I bought two new cars in 1977, a Mustang II Cobra II with a 302 4 speed and a 1977 Corvette with a 350 automatic. When doing comparisons between the Corvette and the Mustang you find the two cars were very close in horsepower per cubic inch with the Corvette only edging the Mustang by only 0.4 hp/cid. Both cars were fun to drive. I sold the Corvette in the early 80’s but I still own the Cobra II today. I have had the opportunity to own every generation of Mustang and still own 4 today. I have a 65 HiPo GT, a 65 A code Convertible, the 77 Cobra II and 2016 GT premium. Of all the Mustangs that I have owned, the Cobra II has been the most fun, and even today when I take it out for a drive I get a lot of thumbs up and if I am parked, without exception I have someone who wants to talk about the car and look it over. Many people also ask to take pictures. I am 76, so I have seen a lot, the Mustang II was the right car at the right time and paved the way for the development of the S550 which is a technological marvel… Thank God Lee Iacocca had the vision to build the car when he did!

I had one of these back in the day and loved it. I never understood the hate for these cars. It was the right car at the right time for ford.... I think people don't put cars in the proper prospective when they are judging them...and I'll go out on a limb here by saying it might have even saved ford. The handling was outstanding with the rack and pinion..I remember steering it with my pinky finger and the V8 could be warmed up. The 13" tires sucked and the design of the car made running duel exhaust difficult .....but I wouldn't mind having another some day.

Great video BST!! Here are some thoughts: As much as people dog the M2, the Mustang II is more Mustang then the Mustang E (imho). Also, I was loving when you went off on a tangent. At the same time I was wondering why you are talking about the K-car, you had pointed out your ADHD kicked in and brought it back to center. LOL!! And lastly a fun fact: the Ford Escape is called the Kuga in Europe. I rebadged my Escape with a Kuga badge. Had someone ask me where the Kuga fell in Fords line up of SUV's. Hehehe.

Awesome bro I appreciate it a lot! Yea I have a 2000 Ford Escort zx2 2.0 DOHC that I rebuilt the engine on because I had the idler pulley on the timing belt snap off underneath flush with the head because the one owner that had it before me put a whole timing belt kit on it and overtightened the bolt ALOT with red loctite so I had to drill it out with a carbide left handed drill bit and bc of the of the limited space I had to pull the head to do it and after I pulled the head I decided to just go get another head from the junkyard and put that on and then take the other head and get it decked enough to bump the compression a good bit and smooth the casting lines and do a valve job and do it all myself and that’s exactly what I did and then recently I said you know what I’m gonna do my own version of a full restomod on this thing and I had a parts pile from Massive and danstengineering stacking up with ITBs with intake aluminum in take manifold and trumpets and on one head I’m gonna do a vct delete and put the extreme energy xr cams that they have for the zetecs now or I’m gonna get the head modified on the intake side of the head to accept the st 170 vct intake cam so that I have a zetec with dual vct control not sure which one yet but i just sanded the whole block and painted it along with everything else in the engine bay and I’m gonna do it up big and keep you posted and send some pics. But I can’t wait for your escort episode. The funny thing is it’s weird how similar the zx2 is to Honda’s, I mean I know they made the zx2 to compete with the tuner scene back then but for some reason it only has a small cult following even though the escort zx2 in my opinion was an awesome car. Anyways keep it real man your doing great keep it up!

The Arab oil embargo saved Mustang II. Seemed like an okay car. My kid sister got one for her high school graduation. V6, automatic... And every one came with a Mustang II front suspension that hot rodders today like! If only it had more power. Coming after the age of the muscle car, well... it seemed lacking. but there wasn't much to choose from in the mid seventies. And fuel economy was wanted with gasoline prices rising. Still, seems like a 302; excuse me 5.0 (4.94889 actual ; )) coupled to an overdrive transmission would have been pretty good on gas. But American car companies just weren't building overdrive transmissions back then. By the way, my 1957 Ranchero with the 292 3 on the tree and 3.89 diff went from at best 15 MPG highway to 20-22 when I installed a Borg Warner OD.

Mustang II with 2.3 turbo T-Bird engine. Much less expensive then SVO version. PD $400 for motor and ECM. But with Esslinger head and cam ran well too. 2.3 intake port design was weird angle but a little port work ok maybe more than a little but you could/can adapt 2.0L intake manifold for quite a boost in power. Better equalized port charges per cylinder. 2.3 manifold was imbalanced between cylinder charges

I believe they used the 2.6 six in some Capri s I've seen them in Pinto's, mine came from a 1975 mustang 2 . I originally bought the 74 to fix the 75 but found the hood and header panal was different in 74 then all the other years and being a kid I n my mom's drive way it was quicker to change the engine then reconstruct the car with know experience or tools to do the body work. I left the automatic rear end in the car , that's why I could burn the tires off so easy. Now that I'm 59 I probably would've done the project differently. But it was a fun car and was all part of my learning experience.

AGREED!! well put and well written GM should have kept GTO alive and Camaro.. they couldnt figure the how in amyway , but the vette they did.. look at ford they only have 1 car Mustang .. now look at Dodge they have 4- Challenger, Charger, trackhawk, 300c and they may have the Durango rocking the Hell kitty logo.. So we the issue is we do have choices

I raced Pintos and Mustang IIs on ovals. The Stang II being based on the Pinto is not a bad thing. The Pinto raced very well. It was ugly, it was a puss from the showroom, but it raced well. The Mustang II was the same car only heavier. I've had dozens of Pintos and Mustang IIs.

@@bstfordchannel923 *Racer Walsh* in Florida and...another in Cali, damn I can't remember their name. Those boys raced Pintos and Mustang IIs at the top levels of IMSA, SCCA, and sand drag and off road racing. They also sold parts and complete cars. Last I looked Racer Walsh was still there. At any rate the cars were used as circle track stock cars in Mini Stock and Pony Stock classes all over the US. Suspension, steering, wheels tires and brake parts gallor were developed for them which are still available. Most of the best kit cars from the 70s 80s and 90s used the same parts. If it's a race car you want the only hard part is power. Now days blowers take care of that.

To guys that appreciated the Mustangs from before or any of the 60's & early 70's muscle cars the mustang 2 was a disapiontment. It was wat it was so some people bought what was available to them. Maybey there were some that preferred the car but most car guys thought of it as cheap, low powered one step above a pinto. Today to see one is cool if it's a nice one but I still dont think there all that cool, i just think cars today are so bland & they have no personality that we have now found appreciation in the mustang 2. So sad.

Don't tell anyone that it's basically a reskinned and slightly stretched Pinto - every mechanical part exchanges - (the original Mustang done exactly the same way with the Falcon) or else they'll start talking about it blowing up, lol!!!!

Sorry but you are wrong about the Mustang II sharing mostly suspension parts with the Pinto!! BECAUSE I owned 3 Mustang II cars (a 1974, and two 1975 cars) and the 2.3 liter engine and most of the transmission parts were DIRECTLY FROM a Pinto if the Mustang II was equipped with the four cylinder engine and either the automatic or standard transmissions as well!! Even the rear end (differential) was a direct swap too between Mustang II and the Pinto in those same cars!! While the V6 cars did share some parts like clutch cables, clutches and the rear differentials as the Pinto, the Pinto didn't have a V6 option that I know of, and the V6 model shared front coil springs with the V8 and Cobra models!! Like I say I owned THREE Mustang II cars, and two of the cars I owned were Mach I while the third I owned was a 4 cylinder equipped 2.3 liter with a stick shift! And yes I owned these cars all used so I was very familiar with replacing parts on them!! And the "Pinto to Mustang Swap" did NOT end at just suspension parts at all!! And once you have swapped in a couple of clutches and replaced clutch cables and such, you begin to realize just how many parts are shared between the two cars!! And the list if far too big to list them all here, because wheel bearings are the same, rear wheel cylinders and front calipers are the same and so on and so forth!! Even the two cars share a "four lug" wheel bolt pattern as well, and if you are really "paying attention" most 1974 to 1978 Mustang II had only four lug nuts holding the wheels on in most cases (except I think the Cobra....but it has been a long time...so I may be wrong on that one)!! But I know I put Pinto wheels on my 1975 Mustang II Mach I a couple of times because it was the only "spare tire" I had for it!!
