  • Should you take a IRON supplement?
Low iron, also known as iron deficiency, can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
    1. Inadequate dietary intake of iron: Iron is found in red meat, poultry, seafood, beans, lentils, spinach, and fortified cereals. If you don't consume enough of these foods, you may not be getting enough iron.
    2. Poor absorption of iron: Certain medical conditions, such as celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastric bypass surgery, can interfere with the body's ability to absorb iron from food.
    3. Blood loss: Iron is lost through blood, so if you experience heavy menstrual bleeding, have a bleeding ulcer, or donate blood frequently, you may be at risk for iron deficiency.
    4. Pregnancy or breastfeeding: The body needs more iron during pregnancy and breastfeeding to support the growth and development of the baby.
    5. Increased iron requirements: People who engage in intense physical activity, such as athletes, may require more iron to support their increased muscle mass.
If you suspect you may have low iron, it's important to speak with your healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment plan.

I wish doctors would be better listeners and actually try to figure out the issue ...I was severely anemic for years, almost had to have a blood transfusion twice. ... Doctors kept sending me for iron infusions and prescribing supplements. Finally I seen a gynecologist for heavy, non stop bleeding. I had polyps. Had a hysterectomy at 37 years old. Best thing ever happened to me. ...but had the doctors been good doctors, I could have felt better years before. Always remember you have to advocate for yourself. If your doctor refuses to find the underlying cause, find a new doctor.

10% of the population has too MUCH iron. Hemochromatosis (he-moe-kroe-muh-TOE-sis) causes your body to absorb too much iron from the food you eat. Excess iron is stored in your organs, especially your liver, heart and pancreas. Too much iron can lead to life-threatening conditions, such as liver disease, heart problems and diabetes.Jan 6, 2023 Mayo clinic

Question . I take trt . Without it my total test levels are around 100. When I take test my ferritin drops to around 5 and my total iron around 45-50. If I take iron supplements my hct goes up fast and then I have to get a phlebotomy which lowers my iron and ferritin. Without trt my iron levels are normal. How can I have both good iron and good test or am I just screwed ?

please stop telling people to take non heme iron. heme is the best. and also - red meat is not problematic. and nuts and seeds are not a good source of iron because antinutrients, no plants are good sources. theres a long list of things that inhibit non heme iron (coffee and tea are biggies)
i have a lot of personal experience on this one

    • @TalkingWithDocs

Sorry David. Heme iron is the direct cause of oxidative stress and is linked to countless cancers. You simply can’t argue with the body of literature. It is more easily absorbed but at a very high cost to your health.

Hi John. You are obviously allowed to eat whatever you want but red meat has a lot of issues. It all has saturated fat regardless of what it is fed or where it roams. The other issue is TMAO. Red meat is directly linked to multiple types of cancer. At the end of the day people are allowed to eat whatever they want but they should get to make an informed choice
