- Should you take a IRON supplement?
Low iron, also known as iron deficiency, can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
1. Inadequate dietary intake of iron: Iron is found in red meat, poultry, seafood, beans, lentils, spinach, and fortified cereals. If you don't consume enough of these foods, you may not be getting enough iron.
2. Poor absorption of iron: Certain medical conditions, such as celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastric bypass surgery, can interfere with the body's ability to absorb iron from food.
3. Blood loss: Iron is lost through blood, so if you experience heavy menstrual bleeding, have a bleeding ulcer, or donate blood frequently, you may be at risk for iron deficiency.
4. Pregnancy or breastfeeding: The body needs more iron during pregnancy and breastfeeding to support the growth and development of the baby.
5. Increased iron requirements: People who engage in intense physical activity, such as athletes, may require more iron to support their increased muscle mass.
If you suspect you may have low iron, it's important to speak with your healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment plan.

Ha that’s funny Kiki
Hilarious! And oh so true.
🤣🤣
😂 Good one! 👍🏼
So true
I wish doctors would be better listeners and actually try to figure out the issue ...I was severely anemic for years, almost had to have a blood transfusion twice. ... Doctors kept sending me for iron infusions and prescribing supplements. Finally I seen a gynecologist for heavy, non stop bleeding. I had polyps. Had a hysterectomy at 37 years old. Best thing ever happened to me. ...but had the doctors been good doctors, I could have felt better years before. Always remember you have to advocate for yourself. If your doctor refuses to find the underlying cause, find a new doctor.

Hi guys from the UK 🇬🇧 👋 I eat lots of lentils, pearl barley, Chickpeas with veg and eat alot of plant base foods don't eat red meat and I'm a Type 1 Diabetic so take Vitamin B6 and B12. My sugar levels are not perfect but good and have more energy than being on the keto diet. I love your channel very informative 👍
Floradix brand liquid iron supplement worked for me for several years. It’s Vegetarian.
Nice
vegetarianism is a great way to get sick an die
Take with food and vitamin C, it will get absorbed, been there done that, my bloodwork reflected that. Iron on an empty stomach is new kind of torture.
For sure. And avoid caffeine
Thank you, doctors, for bringing that to everyone's attention. I had thyroid cancer. They removed half thyroid. They gave me levothyroxine they failed to tell me or did not recognize that iron supplements don't work as well no matter how far apart you take them .
when your anemic .when you're anemic you can do Infusion. It may work for some people for myself i turned orange and my joints, and everything hurt so bad I wanted to rip my hair out of my head. My oncologist told me that it is rare for that to happen . people out there. Please don't let that stop you from getting it done. Thought I'd throw that out for you.
Thank you, doctors, for doing everything you do to takes special personality to do the things you do bless you both❤😊😅😅😅
Why did you say beef has its own issues? That's a more bioavailable iron source than those plants.
The reason we said that is because it is true. Red meat is listed as a class 2A carcinogen with direct links to colon cancer. People are allowed to eat red meat if they want but it's important to make informed choices
BS

Oh oh! I take an iron supplement ( with Vitamin C ) every other day - alternating it with Furosemide - but I take it with my breakfast, which sometimes includes a coffee. I had not been told not to take it with caffeine. Could you tell me what effect caffeine has on the supplement? Thank you, Doctors, and thank you for what you and others in the medical profession are doing in the current circumstances. I always show my respect, as I would not be here if not for incredible doctors like you!
Studies have shown that caffeine binds to iron to varying degrees and relates to the timing of the drink, other chemical components of coffee and tea can inhibit iron absorption.
coffe inhibits non heme iron. men should never take iron unless your labs demand it
forget caffiene - its the tannins
@@TalkingWithDocs Very interesting! I did not know this. I’m a coffee drinker (2, sometimes 3 by 4pm) Thankfully I take my magnesium and iron at night before bed.
@@talache7Magnesium and iron shouldn't be taken at the same time. Aswell problem to absorb it
How about dark green leafy vegetables?(spinach, kale, beet tops)?
Yes they are good sources. The only caveat is that if you large amounts of raw greens and you are prone to kidney stones the oxalates can occasionally be a problem.
But also be aware of iron toxicity, iron levels can rise over the years (because the body has no way of getting rid of it, it can only downregulate absorbtion, but heme-iron from meat is too absorbable), to remedy this you can donate blood, win-win.
Yes, it’s very important to know why you are iron deficient.
Agreed Penny
Critical
bc of our diets and periods and weight lifting more and drinking coffee more and shorter period lengths and fear or animal products...
I had a chronic hematoma that caused my iron levels to significantly drop.
I was gonna be extra & say bc I was born on the 14th, ok?!.... I really was tho. & I ish u not, before I got old, my periods were sooo heavy. Idk if naturally that's y I gotta take more iron :/ I really don't. I guess I just have low blood count but I take all kinds of natural supplements & they make me nauseous. & I take them in the worse way. 🙄 W/ coffee. I remember when red cross came through our school & that nurse was like honey? It's like u're not even alive, hehe. ? First that's not even funny. 2nd, screw giving blood. U just shoved a needle in my veins about 3 xs & still missed. Also, how come that's not the first time I've heard that. Ish about me not being able to give blood @@justagirl7780
Nothing wrong with Quality pasture-raised Meat grass-fed, also plants don't have heme iron which is much more absorbable than any plant iron LOL tell the truth and give the facts please also sardines are a great source of iron and Omega threes and you don't have to worry if you're paranoid about meat
Hi tiger. Yes red meat is a source of heme iron which is the problem and has been shown to cause oxidative stress leading to apoptosis and cell death and linked to heart attack, stroke and cancer. As we have commented a thousand times, we have nothing to gain by people eating meat or not eating meat but they deserve to know what the research says about their food and it clearly shows time and time again that here iron has very real risk. Thanks for watching

Best way to get iron is beef liver. Either eaten in a meal or as a supplement in capsules for those who can’t stand the taste. Look for grass fed beef liver for best nutrition
Thanks docs for all the great information, you're the best.
Thanks roseann!
I'm anemic but it's not iron my iron is off the charts. I ended up figuring out it was the B12. It has made a huge difference all these years I never knew my doctor my cardiologist said I have an anemia that is hereditary from the European countries.. but my iron is dangerously high just be careful.
Yes for sure. Hence the need to find the cause
Are you a diabetic? B12 deficiency is a major factor when take diabetic medicine. I just was informed on this after years with t2 diabetes diagnosis. Now you may also what to look into vitamin k2
Hello docs, I am curious to what are your thoughts on Paul Saladino's video titled Misconceptions on red meat and cancer. Thanks for the content and being willing to engage with your community :D
Please talk more about the causes of anaemia
If you take heme iron you dont need to take vit c, you dont have to avoid coffee and it absorbs faster. Oh and it wont cause digestive issues.
Patient “where can i get my bitamins i need?”
Doctor “red meat, buuuut never mind you can’t.”

Doctor “Cholesterol”
Patient “but doesn’t out body need cholesterol? Isn’t the myelin in our skulls protecting our brain mostly made from cholesterol? And since the cholesterol freakout in recent decades haven’t cases of memory loss related diseases increased drastically?”
Doctor “cholesterol is good sometimes, but only from plants”

But i thought the ion source from vegan diets is non heme iron which less bioavailability. Red meat ,eggs are the best source

Is liquid iron in a form of a prescription Can I get liquid Prescribed?
Soo what kind of test do we need for this? What causes anemia?
What if you low in iron due to your period? Is it better to supplement or eat more iron rich food?
For me I noticed more of a difference with eating meat than a supplement, if you decide to take a supplement then don't, absolutely DONT take it on an empty stomach. It made me throw up, I have no idea what these docs are talking about.
Thank you so much for asking what foods contain this.. America needs more of this everyone wants to take pills for a quick result
Yes food is medicine
Heme sources are the best form...red meat or liver
Red meat does NOT have any issues.

unprocessed read meat, i.e steak etc has no issues with it, it has plenty of iron along with many other nutrients.
Yes and saturated fat unfortunately regardless of how it is raised or fed. And linked to colon cancer. The decision to eat it is yours but there are healthier choices to get what it provides. Thanks for watching

They mentioned liver in the comments. I tried eating liver even though I can't stand it. I had red meat. I took supplements. Nothing worked except Synthesit!
Boosting iron is really tough.
Thinking Synthesit is just for boosting iron is a big mistake. It's a much more comprehensive supplement. Proper nutrition alone can raise iron levels.
Is it true that honey has iron in it.
Yes it does have a small amount of non heme (non animal) iron.
What if you have too much iron (ferritin)?
Will it be all right if I take it on an empty stomach since I fast in the morning and have green tea extract and coffee like 1hr later?
Beet
Liver
Ok
How can a person raise his/her hematocrit? I used to have a high enough hematocrit to give "double red" blood donations. But my last two appointments my hematocrit was one or two points too low for Double Reds. So I could only donate Whole Blood. My iron was high enough for Whole Blood. I'd love to raise my hematocrit before my next donation appointment in April. (105-time donor)

Don't a lot of food that have added iron(like breakfast cereals in particular I believe) have iron in a form that your body can't use? Basically just adding elemental iron to get the daily values up, but not actually giving you the form of iron that your body needs/uses?
It kind of depends but all iron you consume is not absorbed. That is correct

Question about supplements vs food. Is fortified cereal considered getting these from food or supplement? And does iron in fortified cereal affect the GI less than supplements do?
So what causes it?
I've been anemic all my life.
There are many causes. You need to see your doctor!

Obviously you don’t need red meat. But you do need other foods high in iron or a supplement.
I heard liver is a good source of Iron.
It is. We are not huge fans of organ meat or a lot of animal products though
The best
@@TalkingWithDocsThen why do the highest life expectancy countries all have the highest consumption of meat and animal products?
10% of the population has too MUCH iron. Hemochromatosis (he-moe-kroe-muh-TOE-sis) causes your body to absorb too much iron from the food you eat. Excess iron is stored in your organs, especially your liver, heart and pancreas. Too much iron can lead to life-threatening conditions, such as liver disease, heart problems and diabetes.Jan 6, 2023 Mayo clinic

i have a lot of personal experience on this one
Sorry David. Heme iron is the direct cause of oxidative stress and is linked to countless cancers. You simply can’t argue with the body of literature. It is more easily absorbed but at a very high cost to your health.
