  • I've spent nearly every day of the last 4.5 years camping alone in the Michigan wilderness and I never want to leave again. Living solo, off grid with a Bernese Mountain Dog just can't be beat. Unfortunately this dog is going to need a gps tracking collar if I don't want him to run off again.

    you can get a geofence collar Ryan... you set the boundaries on your smart phone as to how far he can go.. and thats it.. the collar will buzz when he gets close to the "geofence" as a warning.. but will deliver a shock if he crosses that border. its a very effective system for folks in the outback or offgrid

      Tried that with one of my Pitties. The only pup that never stayed close. Did not work. She took it ad a game. But, she also would walk through high tensile electric cow fencing too. She would have areas on her nose burned off of fur, but just kept walking through. Odd thing, other than when she felt like a vacation, she had to practically be in my back pocket.

    You may be surprised on how much water that roof will capture, especially if you connect the gutter on each side. A rain barrel and a water filter would make the water potable.

    • @lpeterman
      @lpeterman 9 дней назад +3

      You beat me to it! Your point is correct -- one can "catch" quite a bit of water from even a small roof surface.
      Get an IBC tote (food grade) and a basic two-stage filter, bada bing, free water for gardening, showers, bathing the dog.
      With a better filter, perfectly potable.

    • @Grunttamer
      @Grunttamer 9 дней назад +5

      A filter isn’t going to get the chemicals from the asphalt shingles out. You really shouldn’t collect water off a shingled roof for drinking/showering. You could use it for other things

    • @charlesmcknight6792
      @charlesmcknight6792 9 дней назад +2

      Now that he is getting gutters, it would be a price, but his best bet would be to replace the shingles with a metal roof. MUCH easier to collect water off of a metal roof and I'm sure he would love the sound.

    • @Grunttamer
      @Grunttamer 8 дней назад +2

    Just a quick note, When you open a paint can or varnish or what ever, take a screwdriver (your choice) and drive it through the seal where the lid goes, into the can.(3 or 4 times) This will let the fluid drain back in the can and not harden to the point where the lid won.t seal...

    Nothing makes you feel like a bad parent faster than getting the naughty dog call. LOL I had a rescue GSD who was a critter chaser. She'd get focused, put her nose down, and end up miles from home. She didn't mean to run off. It was the critters fault! LOL Her record was almost 25 miles. Tried everything and ended up fencing 10 acres with a 9 foot fence for her. She could do a standing leap over an 8foot fence. Hope the collar works for you!

    Welcome back, sir! Sassy dog! Let's just creep back into stuff. Kyper is being a dog. May have seen something and took off. Lost it, chased the scent. Forgot what he was doing, lost his bearings? Never been off the homestead. Maybe an excursion to the borders and back so he's a bit more familiar with safe and unsafe. It takes 3 - 5 times for a dog to grasp a concept and have it stick. A little training time in borders is in order, then he'll be fine. Again, glad to see you back.

    For any new construction, even remodeling, the openings you make should be square etc. Regular hinges should be all you need. If you need to buy hinges that can lower, raise level plumb door in opening, maybe take a level out there with you. Even a framing square works . Framing sq when used properly, can replace needing a level.

    Split the door in half so that one door swings against the cabin and the other one toward the outside. That will reduce the weight of each door. Also fill in the triangle above the door so it is fixed in place. The doors will not be as high but the dog should be able to still fit through the doors.

    So glad you’re back in the woods!
    My favorite dog insight book is The Other End of the Leash, I highly advice you listen on audiobook if you’re interested.
    From my experience it is very normal for all dog breeds about 6-9 months to run off, maybe some particular dogs do not, but the norm is to explore and hop from one interesting thing to the next till they are way out there. Glad he’s back with you 😊

    I live in the mountains of Idaho & had a Lab- Bernese up until last year he lived 13 years. I had a similar experience. Has he ran ahead of me on a trail I stepped off the trail about a foot in the trees. And he thought that I had left him and he came running by me at about Mach 2 and ran all the way home. Basically he panicked and went wherever he thought I had gone. And I would lay money that Kyper add a similar experience especially after being gone from the property. I'm glad you're feeling better. I've been very concerned. So glad to have you both back. The GPS collar is a great idea also if he isn't chipped I would think about that. I had my dog stolen twice. And I had to hunt him down by going door-to-door. Not a great feeling.
