    Thank you for a look behind the curtain at the Conservation Center vaults. I can only imagine how humbling it would be to step into one of those 12 vaults surrounded by historical nitrate. Deb and team: keep up the great work - it is very much appreciated.

    Deb, thanks for the great tour of the vaults. Sorry I won't be able to get back there for this year's Nitrate Picture Show. Look forward to seeing you next year. Keep up the good work.

    Awesome. I have always had an excitement for film and all forms of media. I am also a trainspotter along with an interest in the luggage conveyer belt at La Guardia Airport:^) I would love to work in that vault after I retire from my current employment!!!

      With their 3.2 mile system of interconnected conveyor belts, there’s a lot to keep you interested.

      @@nickyreynolds3326 Yes!!! That was really futuristic to single digits aged me in the late 70s and early 80s. And the trains with all thr graffiti were Art in Motion. It was an exciting place back then.

    Isn't it odd that today, we see these reels as an important record of their time, whereas they might've been seen as a disposable commodity in their time!
    In some ways, nothing has changed: I hope we make better efforts these days to preserve the record. Streaming is ephemeral; we need better.

    Thanks from Tasmania, Australia. Would love to see more of your collection. You also store film paraphernalia, don't you? Posters, lobby cards etc. Would also love to see your film festival some day.

    So, with those Vitaphone films that you have, do you also have their soundtracks, whether on the phono records that accompanied the projector prints or in any other forms?

    I would have thought that the films would have been stored in a more inert atmosphere, say under nitrogen, to retard any decomposition. Is that not necessary?

    • @GeorgeEastmanMuseum
      @GeorgeEastmanMuseum  4 года назад +9

      Nitrogen does not help slow down the decay of the film by a significant amount and would make it extremely difficult for staff to go into the vaults to check the status of the collection. The best solution is cool and dry as proven by several tests made by the Image Permanence Institute. Currently our vaults show the film will last over 500 years in these conditions. The model we follow to store our nitrate is the same as used by other archives all over the world, including the Library of Congress, Cinémathèque Française and British Film Institute.

    It would be ashamed if all these films were caught on fire
