Super cool video! I didn't know that kbg would spread. I literally just started trying to grow grass this year, so I am still new at this. Thanks for the info!
That's an awesome tool. I wish I knew about it before I bought my weed zinger, since the pro plugger removed weeds too. It's also great to have all that extra help readily available!
I thought you had 5 problem areas in your lawn but I was wrong. They are Grass Daddy's big helpers. Good job! That Proplugger works great. You have good dirt. It looks good anyway.
I have Bermuda grass can I put annual ryegrass or perennial ryegrass which is better it is November 6th and my temperatures here in California or about 80 degrees and about 50 degrees at night am I still able to plant the seed
I get the idea of what you are doing but what happens to the dirt plugs once you put them into holes of good grass? Do you just throw seed onto? Or wait to see if it fills in on it’s own?
It's working out great! I am having trouble figuring out where I plugged now. I can't find the holes, and the plugs themselves are blending in with the lawn so it just looks fuller. Pretty cool stuff.
Grass Daddy do you have some pictures or update video you can share? I've got some really nice KBG and some not so nice fescue areas. thinking about trying to slowly get rid of the fescue through plugging over the next few years rather than killing it all at once
Another nice vid GD. I was just wondering if you think that the spots will fill in faster this way vs reseeding the small patches ? Im gonna reserva a 10' x 10' area on the side of my house to use for taking plugs out of for my front lawn
I’ve been overseeding with Black Beauty Ultra this fall. It’s primarily a fescue rye mixture but it does have a good percentage of KBG in it. Looking down the road a bit, I’d be interested in using plugs next spring to fill in bare spots that don’t fill in well this fall. Have you had any luck using plugs with this type of cool season mixture? Thx Grass Daddy! PS I love your information and videos! All your helpers make your videos even more fun to watch! Keep them coming!
+bob tobia the plugs would probably work. If anything it would reduce the appearance of bald spots. If a plug has kbg in it when you move it would fill in.
Hey GD, im about to order a proplugger to plug some spots on my new KBG lawn but i wanna put my pre emergent down by this weekend in New jersey. will plugging after the Pre M goe down affect the pre M barrier ?
I really appreciate you sharing this, I just ordered a Pro Plugger, Amazon says it should be here by Tuesday. I've got to wait until late April to start working on transplanting Zoysia plugs around my yard. I have wanted to do this for awhile just didn't know there was a tool that would do it so easily. Is there a trick for how far apart you should space the plugs? I know you are working with Bluegrass but it should be a dominant spreading grass like zoysia so should work about the same i would think. Guess i'll know more next spring. Thanks again for taking the time to do this.
I believe it's every square foot. Zoysia spreads pretty quick. After you plug water it good and once the plugs look like they rooted then hit it with some nitrogen
@@GrassDaddy Sounds great, thanks again for the tips. I've got a few weeks before i can do this, still too early in Missouri i think grass is still brown.
That proplugger is really, really effective. Do you know about how long it takes for KBG to spread out and fill in thin spots? And are there other cool season grasses that do that or is it just KBG? Thanks!!
chris ryan I do not know yet. it definitely widens but then it sends out shoots through the soil so I'm not sure what areas were seed or shoots. I did put one in a pot to see!
You inspired me to purchase a pro plugger. I have 2 questions for my bermuda grass. 1.What should I fill in the holes with after extracting the plugs? Sand? Or just leave them empty? My area gets FULL sun in 98+ degree weather? 2. Once transplanted, should I apply milorganite or is it necessary? Thanks for the video!
1 - When I move plugs I swap them from the good/bad areas. Which if your soil is sandy then sand would be fine. You just want to have a consistent soil across the lawn. 2 - Some people will sprinkle some milorganite in the whole before the put down the plug. Either way Bermuda loves nitrogen. The Grass Factor was putting down 2lbs/k of fast release nitrogen and it loved it (he's a pro so experiment with that high level carefully)
Okay good to know, thanks for that.. So if I had clay soil, should I avoid filling in holes all together with sand? I know I'm getting a bit off topic, but if I had thin areas, would sand be a good filler, or garden soil?
I believe bermuda likes sand but in general you want to keep the soil profile the same across the whole lawn. I know many people with clay would aerate and fill the holes with sand to help with drainage, so I suppose these plugs would be similar concept but just not consistent across the whole lawn
I have heavy clay soil and I just bought one. It worked great. I did wait until after a rainstorm to ensure the soil was wet. The clay gets rock hard during a summer drought.
SwagSubscriber 2 inches wide and you can set it to 2,4,6 in depth. I have been using 4 inch depth but I am wondering as the new lawn grows if I'll need to switch to 6.
I wish I had this type of soil. We have lots of clay in our area and I've been working it for years now. Not sure where you are located, but is that type of soil typical in your area? If I could, I'd have my yard soil removed 5-6" deep and truck in some better soil mixture, but I've gotten the lawn to look like thick carpeting before with what I had, I can do it again. Btw, I turned on a sprinklers zone today and none popped up. I found that the pipe had cracked, so I got diverted to repairing the pipe today. All went well. Always something. I'm sending my soil to the university to be tested, so the process continuse Btw, the kids make the video.
Thanks for watching! Yes that's typical soil here. The plugger works with clay too. We don't deal with clay issues but we do have rocks every inch lol digging holes for those trees and blueberry bushes took FOREVER
Should have hydro seeded when you killed off your lawn bud. That seed has you doin a ton of work for a patchy lawn. Anyway, it's getting there keep up the work.
Hydro seeding is not common in cool-season turf zones. It is used more frequently when seeding turf below the transition zone and west. Cost is a factor. I use burlap sacks to keep newly seeded KYB moist, or better still seed in the fall. I don't like using straw, but the State D.O.T. will use straw between chicken wire mats on embankments, then reuse the mat. He's seeding Kentucky Bluegrass, too, which has a lengthy germination period, which can be 10 - 30 days. In comparison, a perennial rye grass will germinate in 3 days and get mowed before the all the seeds of KYB sprout.
Get your ProPlugger here: www.proplugger.com/
Got half way through this video. Stopped, ordered me one and came back to finish the show. Thank you very much.
You have the best helpers!
The kids are adorable, thanks for the tips.
I'm with ya doing this with my 2 boys.... they LOVE IT
That's cool - now you have a small army of trained lawn pluggers.
Yeah they LOVE it and fight over who gets to help lol
A small army is right!
I see your supervisor was following close behind, making sure you were doing it right.
+kchall5 haha yeah I didnt notice him doing that till I watched the video
I'd buy it if it came with helpful kids. Unfortunately, my 16 and and 19 yr old only help clearing out the fridge.
haha
Help at least they help out lol
Wow!!! That tool made digging out plugs a breeze! gotta get one of those! Cool Tool man!
Tommy Peppers Topics yes its so fun to use I've been doing it daily hehe
Excellent plugger inspector right there to ensure that work is done right.
hahaha
Super cool video! I didn't know that kbg would spread. I literally just started trying to grow grass this year, so I am still new at this. Thanks for the info!
Awesome! Yeah it's really cool seeing it fill in.
That's an awesome tool. I wish I knew about it before I bought my weed zinger, since the pro plugger removed weeds too.

Nice video…I have wet clay soil…does it get stuck in plugger?
Great videos! Do you then overseed the donor area?
Really looking forwards to seeing the progress of the plugged areas.
Steven Sexton yeah its blending in well!
Just got my ProPlugger today can't wait to use it! Cool video bud.
Great family! Sweet helpers too.
I thought you had 5 problem areas in your lawn but I was wrong. They are Grass Daddy's big helpers. Good job! That Proplugger works great. You have good dirt. It looks good anyway.
John Lindborg yeah its fantastic the boys ask to use it every day
Bonus, it makes finding Easter eggs way more challenging.
Great video
Thanks.. I guess I set it to go out today lol was supposed to go out on Friday!
I have Bermuda grass can I put annual ryegrass or perennial ryegrass which is better it is November 6th and my temperatures here in California or about 80 degrees and about 50 degrees at night am I still able to plant the seed
I assume this will work on all cool season grasses I’m in N.J. north and I believe I have a mix of fescue rye and Blue
So it works good in shade and sun? Sorry for silly questions.
I get the idea of what you are doing but what happens to the dirt plugs once you put them into holes of good grass? Do you just throw seed onto? Or wait to see if it fills in on it’s own?
The surrounding KBG spreads into those spots ;-)
Grass Daddy Thanks that’s what I kinda thought! I assume perennial rye and fescue would do the same?
@@Trackhoe075 Correct. Most blends have 10% KBG in them for this reason.
Grass Daddy Thank you sir
Haven't seen KBG plugging before. Interested to see progress and how it turns out. In both the source and plugged areas.
It's working out great! I am having trouble figuring out where I plugged now. I can't find the holes, and the plugs themselves are blending in with the lawn so it just looks fuller. Pretty cool stuff.

Love the Channel love the information I love the realness
Thanks!
I like the plugger. Wish list.
Definately!
just got one also, cant wait to try it
Awesome! You'll love it!
1:12 this little guy in the red is so funny, he has to check each hole!
Do you need to water the plugs like you would with sod? Great video!
Blue Grass King I dont think so because its going into the soil deeper than sod but either way it doesn't hurt
How did this end up working out?

Will this work for bermuda grass as well? I am planning to "plug" bare soil where there has been nothing. Will it work?
Yes!
Hey GD, im about to order a proplugger to plug some spots on my new KBG lawn but i wanna put my pre emergent down by this weekend in New jersey. will plugging after the Pre M goe down affect the pre M barrier ?
If you pre-emergent the whole yard than it should be fine, each plug will have pre-emergent in it
I have been on your channel and never really watched it now I'm Venge watching you lol...
That is me today I’m a gardener but love learning more

mmacejko929 haha they love helping put the plugs in!

chris ryan there is creeping bentgrass but unfortunately fescues won't
Ryegrass?

That looks like good soil. Wonder how it works in heavy clay?
+Craig M I'm not sure. I think people are using it in clay but I dont have first hand experience with it
I have heavy clay soil and I just bought one. It worked great. I did wait until after a rainstorm to ensure the soil was wet. The clay gets rock hard during a summer drought.
Thanks. Think I will order one.
How wide/long was each plug?
SwagSubscriber 2 inches wide and you can set it to 2,4,6 in depth. I have been using 4 inch depth but I am wondering as the new lawn grows if I'll need to switch to 6.
Grass Daddy what are the benefits/detriments of each depth?
SwagSubscriber its for different uses. if you are cutting strips of sod you dont need 4inches. if you are planting flower bulbs you need the full 6.
