  • instructional video on tube type amateur radio equipment ,Example is a WW2 ARC-5 rig.The ARC-5 radios were used by US forces in WW2 in fighter planes ,bombers etc. I The radios are very rugged and light weight it is amazing how well they perform after all these years .Many of these were used by Amateur radio operators in the 50's and 60's they were sold for under 10 dollars by many military surplus dealers.

I’ve still got my high school project in the attic. I forgot to power down once before touching the tubes. Never again!

Beautiful explanation of the trade offs between output power and quality of keying in the ARC-5! Regulation at the proscribed voltages will produce a clean note, once the set is cleaned up. Nice job Bob.

Nice job Bob, really looks good, However, to show you how bad I have it, is that the white plate or tag that you used on the control box, is not square... Believe it or not, that would bother me. HiHi Of course, after homebrewing transmitters and receivers for 69 years now, things like that seem to stick out.... Keep up the good work. Jim WA5WRE

Hi Bob, I had several of the Command sets back in the fifties and sixties and had a lot of fun working with them and getting them on the air.
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos and sharing them with us!
    Best regards,
    Mick Bradford

Is there any chance I can get a schematic for the power supply that you built? Is this something that you came up with or found in the handbook or one of the CQ surplus conversion guides?

Nice result you've got in restoring the set. My interest goes to the rebuild of the triple capacitor, can you tell where the capacitors can be obtained and

Where they of any special type? Also how did you unsolder the can and reassemled it so neatly?

They are not special capacitors just normal replacement type small radio capacitors most are 400 or 500 volt and very small either .05 or .047 value both work fine. I did not un-solder or remove the cans of the old capacitors The replacement Capacitors I installed are not enclosed they are just wired under the chassis to a ground lug bolted to one of the old capacitor mounting holes . The original capacitors were in cans and bolted down so the old type foil and beeswax capacitors could withstand the extreme conditions and vibration in military aircraft with large piston engines. so capacitors on wire leads are ok for use in the shack . 73 Bob
