I love the looks of the dino but I have to say the most beautiful car is a 1962 ferrari 250 gto, only problem is I have 100% better chances of getting a beautiful dino than a gto.
Well done video. I had my first Ferrari(Dino) in 1982 and it was wrecked in a crash with a Volvo wagon. Those Volvo's are tanks for sure--. There was something very special about the Dino; fabulous looks and incredible sound from the small 2.4 liter V6. I always felt I was racing, even on a slow trip to the market. It was a far more exciting car than the 348 Spider that I bought years later. I remember the day a group of Hell's Angels bikers surrounded the car on a trip up LA's Mulholland Dr and they all gave me big thumbs up and approving nods. It was a good day to own a Dino----
Like a lot of folks, I only knew the Dino as the poor man's Ferrari, the knock off, the fake. After watching this video and seeing the passion of the car's 'custodian' and hearing for the first time the tragic but heartwarming story of the cars creation I have a great, newfound respect for the Dino. Thank you /DRIVE for opening my eyes with such a well produced video.
The John Pogson videos are my favorites, always interesting, love the stories and history and how he delivers it, I'd love an additional channel with just his videos.
When i was 11 yrs old in Scotland - 1976 - my father knew a guy with one of these - this chap took me and my brother who was 8 - in his Dino - both of us crammed in the passenger seat - no seat belt and went thru the Scottish countryside at 100-120 MPH ! - I'll never forget that....what a trip !
For those who haven't but love the 246GT Dino, it is imperative to see one in real life. Two dimensional photography, whether it be stills or motion, has never, and can never capture the beauty that this shape is.
Highly professional video. This film demonstrates the potential of Internet video sharing- expertly produced media available to a large audience. Exemplary work.
The first ever school project I remember doing was on Dino's. That must have only been grade 6 or 7 but I remember it like yesterday. Always loved those things.
Remember one always parked local to my house when I was a kid. I knew it was a thing of great beauty even then some 40 yrs ago. Actually still have the photo I took of it. Really great video BTW
You are so right it is amazing i had a 1970 246 GT I paid 4000 pounds for it back in 1980 it was a LHD needed some work but i loved it drove it as a daily driver to work never had any problems with it, in the end i moved to Canada and shipped the car there when it was 15 yrs old drove for another year then sold it to pay for my house at the time i got about 25,000 pounds for it , but I wished I had of kept it look at the price now !
I agree.....but where do I find Dino hides for the interior ? ...and I wonder how many Horsepowers it would take for 1 T-Rex ? " heyyyy!!.......I got 20 T-Rex and Pterodactyl Torque under the hood ! " ...I love razzing these pretentious fuck-ups.......we have the only Duesenburg Phaeton Royale ever made ....-and Aristotle Onassis' Ferrari '66 330 GTC..... But I'm 500" Cadillac Torque specialist.....AND THE ONLY CAR THAT IMPRESSES ME IS THE ONE YOU BUILD YOURSELF !!!!
This model was the first Ferrari I had ever seen. The owner parked it next to his ancient Rolls Phantom, 944 turbo and his every day car, a 500SEL below my highschool best friend's appartment building. It looks so gorgeous.
Fortunate to have seen many in the 70's. People were real haters on this car. Now the collectors realize , a car with such a heart felt story is worth more than they can imagine. This will be a very expensive Dino future.
I remember being inspired to draw one at a early age . I am divorced and lost a lot of money and the one thing that I regret is ,as a result of that divorce I'll never afford one . Could have brought one for 15 grand around 1972 (coulda, woulda shoulda !! ) .I have a mate with a 328 ( I think) but his brother has a yellow restored Dino, I told him "You own a beautiful piece of art not a car !" Guy has knocked back a millon !!
Always my favourite Ferrari, even if it wasn’t officially Ferrari. So beautiful and nimble. Even if it might be sacrilege to some, I think it is very comparable to an early Porsche 911, except that 911s were much more reliable.
When I was in my 20’s my boss had a Dino and the dealer was in Reno. He kept having problems with the car. It was at the dealer in Reno and he wanted to me to drive him up to Reno from Sacramento. On our way, he asked if I didn’t mine flying up and letting me drive back alone. We stopped in Auburn and flew up in his plane. Picked up the car and drove him back to the Reno. I was starving and stopped at McDonalds and people were staring at me when I got. Here I was in this expense car and wearing jeans a t-shirt and work boots and stopping at Mickey D’s. I got half way back and could not figure out how to turn on the lights. Every car I had driven had a light switch on the dash and this was before cell phones. So I stopped at a rest area and used the pay phone to call Jack at his house. I was embarrassed not to know that there was a switch on the turn signal that turned on the lights. It was a blast driving such a cool car from Reno to Auburn by myself and I had plenty of cars pull up next to me, eyeing it over. You sat so low to the ground and looking out the windshield all you could see was the road. It was like driving a go cart with a windshield. Loads of fun.
While the Ferrari family story about Dino is quite tragic and even though the car is so pretty, it was never all that good as a sports car. Sorry internet fans and dreamers, but compared to a Porsche 914/6 the Dino handles as if its perched on a off road lift kit, the steering has that weird Fiat 124 coupe tractor like feel to it and for its day it was slower than your neighbors Porsche 911S. The Dino is really more art than performance. I have driven them and every time it was a disappointment, but get out and look at it and it is so stunningly gorgeous that it just melts your heart. Salute Dino!
Can someone explain to me his upshifting technique at 1:00-1:25? Almost sounds like there is a blip for double clutch upshifting, but in the video he's not double clutching.
supremewhip well , when I ride a bike sometimes i do that , between upshifts .. mostly just because of the sounds :)) but in this case im not sure if its the same , altho he does talk about the sound , so maybe its the same reason :)
well..i used to do that on old carburator motorcycles to prevent the engine from boging down when i up-shift...sometimes old carburators get some air flowing back from the intake (blow-back), because of the "negative" air flow due to back-pressures from other cylinders, and the engine "coughs", because its not getting enough air and/or fuel from the carburator...to prevent that from throwing the engine too low down on the RPMs you just keep it breathing with a momentary gas while shiffting...i dont know if that was HIS reason, but at least thats what i used to do..
For those who own or have driven a US version, you don't know what you're missing. I have a 1971 European version. It has more horse power, more torque, and is 100 kg lighter. Plus it is geared differently. It drives completely different than the US version. I let someone with a US version drive my car. His reaction, "Wow. What did you do to it?" Nothing. That is the way that Enzo Ferrari wanted it.
No John. You got it all wrong. Dino will last forever as the young people's car. You'll never feel you're getting older than the car. Dino Ferrari had simply gave his own youth to this car. It's his soul and heart.
In front of its time in 1968? Go look at the Porsche 904 from 1964. Similar shape (maybe even more beautiful,) and a similar idea. Small, light, mid-engined 2-seater with a small, powerful engine.
I understand that they only get a small amount through RUclips... but they could have plugged products and had ads play within their own video as well as the ads that RUclips plays, could they not?
Matthew Miller AdBlock extensions get rid of banner, video, and all sorts of other type of ads. It has been devastating to RUclipsrs... especially the ones who don't have a wealthy investor. I wish RUclips would make its ads 15 seconds or less. A 15 second ad doesn't really seem to take all that long, but when it is a 30 second ad it feels like an eternity. Maybe less people would install adblocking software that way..
15 seconds is a good compromise... if they were only allowed 5 seconds for a commercial, I can almost guarantee that they would just pepper ads in the middle of our movies. Can't really blame them for trying to make more money... the quality of car shows (Motor Trend, /DRIVE, Smoking Tire etc) on youtube is amazing... but they are also extremely expensive. I wouldn't be surprised if they use an outside source for funding... this channel just doesn't get enough views to cover the freakish costs. I think 15 seconds would satisfy most advertisers while also preventing any more channels from inserting ads in the middle of the clip (which is becoming common argh)
Now that Ferrari has been cut from Fiat they need to bring back the Dino name in order to survive selling cars. And just as before they can make Dinos be Ferrari sub-branded cars that are less than 8 cylinders.

Possibly the most beautiful car of all time.
I'm 100% with you on this. Miura, prettiest car ever, 2nd place, the Dino. Two gorgeous shapes.
@@diamonddog257 You're subbed to rebel media. Your opinion holds no value.

Great car with a great story behind it. A beautiful tragedy.
One of the most beautiful cars ever made. Gives even Alfa’a most artistically-designed shapes a run for their money.
The Sound of that engine is SOOOO Beautiful !!!! I could listen to it being run around a track for hours !!!!
I see some of this car in the modern Alfa 4C...Ferrari was born as an Alfa racing car after all.

Could DRIVE put some advertising in the videos instead of having their viewers pay for DRIVE+ to see the full length, high quality film?
The channel owner only gets a small percentage of the advertising dollars. It seems that /Drive wouldn't get enough from the ads to cover their costs.
I understand that they only get a small amount through RUclips... but they could have plugged products and had ads play within their own video as well as the ads that RUclips plays, could they not?

Can't really blame them for trying to make more money... the quality of car shows (Motor Trend, /DRIVE, Smoking Tire etc) on youtube is amazing... but they are also extremely expensive. I wouldn't be surprised if they use an outside source for funding... this channel just doesn't get enough views to cover the freakish costs.
I think 15 seconds would satisfy most advertisers while also preventing any more channels from inserting ads in the middle of the clip (which is becoming common argh)
