Kyushu J7W Shinden | Japan's Backwards Plane

- The Kyushu J7w Shinden is easily one of Imperial Japan's strangest prototypes. On first glance this plane was simply built backwards, but its a bit more complex than that. The Shinden was a canard style fighter craft purposely built to take down American bombers. It was also built so as they became availible it could be upgraded to a turbo jet making it the Kyushu J7W2 Shinden Kai.

Was impressed to see Shinden in the latest Godzilla movie.
🤫🤫🤫🤫
Same.
me too, thats why i ended up here, great video by the way.....
Godzilla Minus 1 shows it off beautifully
It's in there? That's interesting
@@JapanatWar it's a major plot point
@@RileyZilla1001 I'll have to look into it. Do you know of any clips online?
@@JapanatWar none yet. It's in theaters now
I just saw the Shinden in action in Godzilla Minus One. Glorious...
WOW This is the fighter plane that Shikishima was on board in Godzilla Minus One
Fitting then, this craft is actually the final boss in the game, "Heroes of the Pacific", piloted by Shun Nagawa.
The thing hits like a truck and is the second fastest opponent in the game. The first being The Me-262.
An interesting thing I noticed in Minus One; the German labels on the seat. I had almost thought the Shinden was a repurposed Messerschmitt. Glad to see I was wrong and they actually produced it locally.
Nope, the seat was just the imported [SPOILER].
@@SchneeflockeMonsoonYES, SINCE ITS THE GERMANS WHO INVENTED THE EJECTION SEAT
2:26 real Godzilla-1.0 Plane
It was interesting to see Godzilla Minus One use this as the "High Tech" Godzilla fighting weapon of the movie. Using something that was real and experimented with at the time to take the place of some hyper-jet Mazer equipped transforming fighting robot is an interesting way to go about both the sci-fi elements of classic Godzilla movies and the effort the filmmakers went to to make the movie feel visceral and more real.
I mind playing an old PS2 game called 'Sky Odyssey'. Some of the islands you flew the main discovery missions, had areas that contained bits of a Shinden. Once you collected all the parts, you ended up with the Shinden as a bonus plane.
Do wanna mention the 6 propellers may have been likely only 4 in its production model. Aside that had it been in service would have been a very effective bomber hunter due to the 30mm's it would be equipped with. Although most certainly would require escort crafts if there is any P-51's at lower proximity's.
The problem with the Shinden was flying the thing. The prop spin kept pulling the pilot to the right.
Second problem was it suffered the same flaw of all Japanese planes that it was fragile. 5 or 6 12.7 mm machine gun
bullets was enough to blow off a wing. With the engine in the tail meant if a fighter go on it's tail the bullets would plow into the engine and
knock out that engine. Without power the plane would fall out of the sky backwards and not glide at all.
I don't know if it was backwards or genius but it is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. IMO only a Mustang is as beautiful for propeller aircraft.
thx to Godzilla Minus 1, tell me about this special fighter..
Interesting!
There were no plans to replace the J7w Shinden's engines with turbojet engines.
This was clearly stated by the developer at the time.
However, an accident involving the propeller contacting the ground during early ground tests of the J7w Shinden led to a widespread misconception that the turbojet engine was an option.
At the same time, the J7w Shinden was used in many novels and science fiction works because of its special shape and the episode that it was never completed despite the existence of an actual model.
(Godzilla minus one is one of them.)
Thus, there are many fans of the J7w Shinden, and many people still believe that the plan to install a turbojet engine was true because of wishful thinking.
The only planned modification of the J7w Shinden exists only to reduce the number of propellers from six to four for the mass production model.
Recent studies have also questioned the cooling performance due to the narrow air intake, which would have made development more difficult if a turbojet engine had been employed.
As mentioned in the video, Kyushu Aircraft, the company that developed the J7w Shinden, is not inherently suited to design, develop, and manufacture an aircraft with new ideas like the J7w Shinden because of its limited development capabilities and experience.
While it is commendable that they flew the test plane, the reality is that the actual evaluation is far less than we can imagine.
It is important to make a compact and lightweight design in order to have a high climbing ability and to mount an armament that can destroy bombers even with an underpowered engine.
In this sense, it was a very good idea, but it would require a great deal of research and development to make it into a practical fighter.
The phrase “a strange secret weapon designed with a new idea that no one has ever seen before” is what propelled the J7w Shinden, a small fighter of which only two test models were produced, to become a very popular fighter that is still talked about to this day.
Incidentally, a full-scale model of the J7w Shinden can be found in a Japanese museum.
It was used in the filming of Godzilla Minus One, and was built from the beginning to be displayed in a museum in order to keep the filming budget low.
If you ever come to Japan, please visit this museum.
If you ever come to Japan, you will learn a lot more by seeing the full-scale J7w Shinden, which was meticulously reproduced based on the remaining photographs and blueprints.
Nearly identical content to the Dark Skies video release about a month before this video, however, the photographs shown are substantially clearer, and the presentation is superior.
I hadn't heard of that channel! Defiantly a good channel from what I see, possible we used the same sources.
Thank you for the compliments!
Genius.
J7w shinden looks like the curtiss wright xp 55
It was simply the effective design for rear piston aircrafts.
But its the beautiful one!
👍🏻👍🏻
godzilla minus one
Japan was fighting against China, Russia, and US +Godzila during WW2
But US made a big mistake fighting and surrender Japan,
So the cold war started, US has to continue fighting toward China for Vietnan War, Korean war, and with Russia up to now.
Godzilla Minus One brought me here.
👺👍
Sir. Like the video, but whatever font you're using is cancerous
You misspelled cool and said weird, weird indeed,
Really? All of you have seen this plane for the first time in Godzilla movie?? I've seen this fighter when I was 12 years old , today I'm 58 . And I'm still impressed by the way..
