Well, Vulcano ammunition was developed almost entirely by the Italian company Leonardo. BAE has a marginal role, and it's mostly about penetrating the US defence market and adapting the ammunition to their guns.
Leonardo has BAE stocks, maybe they will include this company in their wallet too, anyway, Italian and German frigates are using the 127mm vulcano ammo, the results are impressive, they hit a drone which was flying only 10 meter high with a speed of 100m/s on a distance of 5 kilometer! on YT search with Leonardo vulcano guided test, this was 8 years ago, imagine today! absolute impressive
yes, it's because it needs a US partner or at least a US factory so the US can buy it (with very few exceptions) they're very restrictive in manufacturing jobs outside the US (except for R&D, those are chill)
Interesting animations in POV.. I'm curious that it shows at 1:36 and about 4:22 that the finned tail section rotates independently of the body or airframe allowing the canards to maintain a minimal drag orientation and steer munition to target. Is this correct, or just some mistake in the animation's design ? Can anyone confirm ?
It is a standard practice these days in all precision ammunition, there is motor attached to the fins to rotate it for stability. In addition these ammunition genrally have rotating driving band to enable them to be fired from rifled bore if required
The spinning tail generates a vortex behind the shell. This disrupts the airflow creating a reduction in drag to increase range. Base Bleed rounds do the same thing by ejecting inert gas from the base of the shell which develops a gas trail behind the shell to reduce drag.

It's probably impossible, but imagine arming these shells on a 16 inch gun It'd be pretty interesting to test Sadly it'd be a matter of figuring out cost and stuff like that Would be Interesting to test
Totally. Compare the cost of firing missiles because of short range artillery. Even these expensive hi-tech rounds would be cheaper, and ships can have a big magazine.

@@yible3278yes and their gun was the 114 mm, this is an american 127 mm former United but in origin FMC. Nowadays it's hard understand how much american or british BAE is
It's a little more expensive then a standard round, 30/40K for GPS guided one and under 70K for anti-ship IR guided one, but with 4 times greater range you can reach targets well inside on land and keep your billion destroyer out of enemy counterfire. You must fire about 15 rounds to match an Harpoon warhead weight at cost of around 1 million matching the price too and twice to match the 5 million LRASM but there are small/medium targets that needs less rounds. Harpoon and Vulcano we can say have comparable ranges, but LRASM out range 5 times gun ammunition. There is an economical advantage in use Vulcano round
$100 k-$200 k per shell. While it’s many times expensive than ballistic shells. But is still cheaper than the near $1 million tag per shell for the 155 mm guns on zumwalt.
@@abhik2847 where did you get this number? Also, the LRLAP was planned to cose about 25k$ per shot. The reason the price went up is the fact that only 4 destroyers ended up being built and only 8 guns can actualy fire those rounds. Produsing ammunition for only 8 guns can skyrocket the prices. This is the exact same for any weapon system. Vulcano is suppossed to be fired by 127mm naval guns and 155mm howitchers at the same time. This is why they didnt talk about a larger verion for the AGS in the video. They want it to be universal. The HVP meant to be used by the railgun is also universal and can be fired by 127mm, 155mm, 203mm guns and the railgun. The HVP also requires no rifling, it can be used by smoothbore naval guns in the future, achiving higher velocities and range.
I will guess around 25-50k each which isnt all that expensive the only downside is the size of the warhead although they talked about lethality the round is subcaliber and designed to fit in a 5inch gun the diameter of the projectile itself should be around 3inch or 76mm the larger 155mm guns (like the advanced gun system) or even the 8inch 203mm guns could fire a much larger projectile at the same velocity and get a longer range and more damage on the target I dont know why they choose to use the same round on both the 127mm and 155mm guns there are not enough 155mm guns on ships I guess, this can change in the future though
How can it be that the only two 127mm (5") naval guns available on market use different and incompatible projectiles, since they're both made by Nato allies? In a war scenario this makes no sense at all.
It's not true they can use each other ammunitions, that's what NATO calibre mean starting from rifle you can use all 5,56 ammunitions, obviously the result will be a little different being Vulcano a Leonardo development works a tiny better on Leonardo mount 127/64 instead of BAE 127/62
5:37 "You slightly increase the size of the sa-boa." It's "sabot," a French word, and it's pronounced as "say" and "bo (the 'bo' sound from 'boat')" together. I cannot believe a person selling this device doesn't know that.
Interestingly the technology has been ported to 76.2mm rounds which achieve a range of 30km in ballistic profile and 40km for a glide profile added in. Terminal Infrared and laser homing option available as well as GPS.
Normally I would agree with you but he's gesturing with his hands like he is comfortable with what he is saying. If he's blinking and showing little gesturing then yes he is lying. As for the round wearing the barrel, it's using a discarding sabot compression collar until it leaves the gun barrel. All guns are subject to wear never mind this one and need frequent maintenance. After so many shots the barrel is replaced. The sabot is well proven for decades and makes the same round adaptable to slightly different diameters of gun barrels.
Another thing is that he would do that professionally, he may be able to take it. Also, who holds the maintenance contract for Mk45 with the USN? Would it happen to be BAE?
