    Update: The beavers had this thing rebuilt within 3 days and within 3 weeks it was thicker and about a foot taller. This dam is new this year and the beavers just experienced their first big rain. The dam was completely washed away and the creek is now flowing like it was before them. This creek turns into a river every year.

    • @pamela11ooo16301
      @pamela11ooo16301 4 года назад +3

      creek bottom looked shallow when you walked up where the beavers had dammed it up and removed their pile of sticks breaking their dam, if you dig it out deeper where you walked up to in the shallow creek and put a overflow pipe into it hiding it from beavers would that help from turning into a river? and put a trapper cage out to catch bobcats size then take them beavers to a habitat rescue for animals maybe they can get them to new housing water way that they cant block up .

      it was nice of you to leave a lot of their building material on the banks beside the old dam. It might have taken them beavers 4 days if they had to cut all new material during the rebuild ;)

      If this is your property then the beavers did you a favor. A pond of this size isn't cheap to install and if it wasn't creating a problem ,it would make a nice place to stock fish and attract ducks to hunt.

    Hell Yeah brother! Enjoyed every minute of this! Damn fine job you did! I'm a bit older now but that took me back to my teen aged years. I'd bust a small hole in the dam and set a trap. Next day was easy pickings and the pelts sold qiuckly! The local farmers picked up on it and paid me to come trap foxes and bobcats. Sold those pelts as well. Getting paid doing what I thought was just plain fun! Life was good!

      Helps that there were larger bits of wood in there.
      The larger they are the more you can disrupt the construction by taking them out.
      The smaller they are and the more mud, sticks and stones the beavers use to put it together, the longer it will take to pull it apart.
      If somehow the beavers managed to let the mud bake before a heavy rainfall it might become rock solid and far harder to break.

    • @mnomadvfx
      @mnomadvfx 2 года назад +2

      Also he's being pretty foolish considering the height and width of the dam.
      If enough of it failed at once at best he'd just be swept down stream - at worst he'd be impaled quickly on one of the branches he dislodged.

    I removed a beaver dam with my grandad. He wanted it gone because it blocked the water from what he regarded as his swimming hole. The beavers rebuilt it overnight. Day 2 repeat, etc. After a number of increasingly dramatic tear downs, including explosives, he called state game wardens. They trapped & moved the beavers when the water started to wash out a road upstream. The critters are really good engineers & their dams are really strong.

    Beavers create meadows. Silt settles in still water. The dams also retain water in the high lands allowing more moisture later in the dry season. Dams that plug culverts are damaging to roads.
