- Our man in China, Elliot Richards takes a look at a delightfully simple and straightforward new EV: The BYD Atto. This no-nonsense family car prioritises practicality and familiarity over high-tech features and posh materials, as so few other EVs do. And best of all China isn't keeping this one to themselves - the Atto 3 is headed for the Australian market very soon! But will it be a winner? Does it have enough to charm the Aussies? Check out the video to find out.

I know majority of ppl on here don’t like the interior but I love how it looks different and not so boring like other cars. This feels like a really stylish minimalist interior. I do love my buttons and practicality, but still cool nonetheless.
AC in the rear seats would usually require an upgrade.
Think it’s missing interior climate control buttons, haven’t seen any in the reviews.
They're all the same only some are a bit different.
Welcome back Elliot, and I've ordered an Atto 3 in Australia. Finally a practical affordable EV. I live in a small rural Tasmanian town without charging infrastructure but with crazy rising fuel costs we've installed an 11kw charger on our 12kw solar array... For me a simple, cheaper EV with around 400km range it's a no brainer. Looking forward to delivery next month!
well done for making the switch when there is no proper infrastructure! hope you have fun with your Atto 3!
Good on you. I'm waiting for the Atto 4 as I live in regional Victoria and have slightly longer range requirements (though nearby fast charging infrastructure is coming).
I wonder what the uptake rate for the Atto 3 in Aus will be? I’ve done my share of EV evangelizing and was informed just a few days back that one of my clients now has one on order. Wonderful news.
@@Gaffa3007 I've read there are around 3000 pre-orders, they might lose some when it comes time to pay... But then I expect they will see a whole lot more once you can test drive a RHD version.
@@Gaffa3007The interest in them is high. Some people are disappointed that it's taking time for them to come (there are some delays from the original timetable). You get more for your $50K than with MG for example.
Just ordered this for my father in Australia. By local standards fantastic value for money. Fantastic response from prospective customers, showing there is strong demand for EVs in the country if affordable vehicles are available. Good luck to BYD. I hope they shake up the market and drive the local transition to EVs.
If Tesla's back up is sometimes questionable as I have read in some markets? what back up and inventory is going to be available in Auistralia.
don’t buy chinese cars, it is national security. advice from indian
even Indian bought a lot of byd e6 and E-buses😄
How much is it?
@@fannyalbi9040 Don't buy BYD, it will affect the speed of getting a new car. BYD's sales in China are crazy, and many customers have to wait for the first half of the year to get their new cars. This is not a state politician, so what are the security concerns? It's all hyped political issues.
I don’t agree with the “bland exterior” I think it looks very nice and the interior also looks good.
Affordability is what people are looking for regarding EVs.
Great review
A nicer exterior than a frog eyed Ford Puma with an interior far more interesting too..
Love the drive selector which will make you feel like you're in a jet fighter..
Now where's my aviators 😎 and start playing highway to the danger zone. 😂
Also, after the bad experience with Tesla cars due to their poor long term reliability; I think it is important that the mechanical and electrical components be made to high quality standards and to last a long time. Things like high quality gears in the differentials and high quality capacitors in the power supply.
The CCP and Putin love this video.
Totally agree with affordability where many are too expensive!
@@philseung8 I've got news for you. You can go Japanese which WILL BE easy on your wallet when it comes to initial purchase price. The car is a Mitsubishi EK X EV or Nissan Sakura. Mind you a FIRST EVER MASS PRODUCED EV was a Mitsubishi iMIEV. You don't have to buy any "Communist" EVs!
Welcome back Elliot! We really appreciate that Fully Charged Show introduces BYD's new practical EV - ATTO 3 (or Yuan Plus in China). We hope people would love it and all of your opinions have been heard by us. We'd like to meet you in local dealers and hope you would like to take a test drive! Stay tuned to our latest information!
Welcome to Europe and Finland also, we would love to see your cars here. Legacy car makers evs are full of expensive tech what is not needed by ordinary people
@@dot7107 Waiting for your consumer products in India. Market's heating up, please bring this to India and it'll be an instant hit because of size and range.
Hi BYD, any idea as to when the Tang long range will be available in Australia? Thanks
BYD still have hard time to supply enough EVs in China, so I think it will take a long time to see their EVs in other countries. Hop I can buy one in Canada.
BYD I'm so looking forward to test driving the Atto 3 or seal in the UK. What you've done with your cars are excellent, keeping it simple so normal families can transition to electric vehicles for a cleaner and brighter future for our kids. Also please make an affordable electric motorcycle I'd be more than happy to test ride it if you do.
Hey every car maker, MORE EVs like this please!
simple, no frills, effective
EVs are whats missing from most markets.
Totally agree and those cars will come eventually, they make more luxury cars first which then trickles down to the premium segment then into the budget segment. 2025 is probably the year when we will see more budget options, because according to Dr Herbert Diess CEO of the Volkswagen Group, that is the year when EV’s will hit parity with ICE cars, in other words EV’s and ICE cars will cost the same to manufacture!🤟
I like its simplistic nature too. Electric cars have the potential go be much more reliable and maintenance free but not if they over complicate it with gimmicks.
Yeh if ev cars costs more than ice ones then what's the point right? Australian cars are already more expensive than other countries so it makes sense to have basic models which just works!
I love the BYD's no frills approach. Unlike other companies they're constantly trying to reinvent things. It's plain, simple and effective.
All of the basic car elements you mention are exactly why I love my chevy bolt. While the luxury ev segment may be very cool with all the tech - I don't need it. I need a small, uncomplicated commuter car.
Adam Pearce: Agreed. But people also want a reliable AND durable car, and given GM's reputation, I think how that pans out remains to be seen re its BEV's. Some of the early battery and quality issues aren't enouraging. (Same thing for Tesla for service, service convenience, and its various build and motor issues, as well).
@@rogergeyer9851 so far - the battery issue aside I've had no reliability issues with the Bolt. But to the point of my comment - the philosophy of a simple commuter car is still fundamentally right. Not everyone wants to pay for a vehicle whose price tag is mostly driven by bells and whistles. Give me a car that is effectively a battery and a motor with directional control and we're good.
2:23 - Robert rightfully rants.....
He's right. Australian government policy has been openly hostile to EVs (and to green energy). But since May, we have had a new government run by adults. Green energy policies are changing rapidly, and better EV policies are on the way. I'm hoping this means that companies will start selling their EVs here. There are several cars - NIOs, several of the VAG cars, Fords, Xpengs and others - that are simply not available here, and that I would buy if they were available. It's not like there isn't the appetite for EVs here: each allocation of Ioniq 5s and EV6s sells out instantly, and waiting lists for other EVs are huge. I'm hoping that the manufacturers will react reasonably quickly to our change in government and speed up the launch of their cars here. But I'm not optimistic: I think we might have pushed ourselves right to the back of the queue over the past few years, and we may be stuck there.
Yes, the last thing you want is a Government concerned about China's increasing aggression around other Nations, their blatant copying and spying on Western Businesses. No we want adults who will get us cheap things - turning a blind eye to those imprisoned for speaking up against a totalitarian Chinese Government and the dreadful way they treat their own people ... but as long as we get cheap cars ... as long as we get bread and circuses...
@@gazgandalf4854 I said the previous Australian government was hostile to EVs. The EVs we're not getting as a result of that policy are from America, Germany and France, as well as China. I didn't bring up the previous government's hostility to China, and I do not understand why you felt it was relevant here.
Manufacturers will only bring models to Australia if they are forced too do so by having tighter emissions standards. We are yet to see if ALP have the balls to do this.
@@bmc8195 For the very reasons I mentioned. I don't know the policy of Australia's previous Governments hostility to EV'a but I know that China's humane treatment even of its own people never minds its hatred of black's is dreadful. Does it stop me buying goods made in China to act as landfill? No, I am ashamed to say many of the things I need are made there. However, if I had the choice that would be different, as in say, an EV. And if my Government was 'childish' enough to say we're not importing goods from bullies, that would be good enough for me.
@@gazgandalf4854 EVs - which I posted about - and China - which you posted about in your response to my post about EVs - are two different things. One is a variety of different electrically-powered vehicles, and the other is a large country between Mongolia and Vietnam. I'm honestly not sure how you've got the two concepts confused.
I get that you don't like China. I don't like oysters or bananas. Should we argue about those? They are, like China, also not EVs.
This is what we need in Canada, just like my Honda HRV in EV form, simple and no frills.
I've ordered one of these here in Australia in the extended range which was expected to arrive this month but has been delayed for 6-8 weeks atm. The one's coming here do have the electric push button tailgate I'm told. Look forward to your arrival here down under, cheers!

@nieooj gotoy haha yeah 🦎
Finally an EV thats just a car that happens to run on electric, I love the interior of this, outside looks pretty good too. Hopefully will be the contenter they want it to be in the Australian and New Zealand markets.
The previous Australian federal government was against EVs. We had an election this year and have a new federal government who is much more open to the idea so hopefully Australia’s uptake if EVs increases from now.
Finally a practical car for Australia.
I dont care about doing 0-100 in 2 seconds I just want a practical car that is at a reasonable price.
If more manufacturers start making these there will be a good range and Tesla will feel the competition.
Yeh mate, I couldn't agree more, I've been screaming out for practical, no frills, affordable RVs with common sense performance.
I hope they start a massive trend & catch Tesla with their pants down.
For all of Elon's BS about killing of the ICE car industry, he continues to introduce even faster models which are even more expensive.
Despite the hype about ELONs genius, he's more often than not, the dumbest high profile person on Earth.
Another no fill is MG ZS EV
How much is it? what is the cheapest Tesla you can buy in your country?
@@fatboy19831 The bare bones RWD Model 3 starts at $65,500 for white & rubbish bin hubcap wheels. 🤮
Tesla builds cars that their employees aspire to own and drive. Until other manufacturers can do that at an affordable price. Tesla has no competition.
Huge interest in Australia for the Atto 3.
This is the tipping point for cheaper EVs for the masses. 🤞
I don't think so... its too expensive, the interior styling and material choices are not great in my view, it lacks Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and its fast charging capabilities are a massive disappointment. I have to say the range is excellent as is the practically. I'd rather wait for at least a version with better fast charging specs and a sharper price.
No it really isn’t. Can’t even do Sydney to Canberra in extended range version and is nearly $50 k for a Chinese made small vehicle.
@@GlowingTube I have heard it tested at a charging rate of higher than BYD say, around 89KW. I hardly think that is a massive disappointment when most fast chargers around where I live (SEQ) are 50-75KW, and I would imagine for you too, assuming you are in AUS. As for Apple/Android they are slated to arrive via an update at the end of the year.
@@foxxster3565 That is incorrect, the range is around 480KM's for the larger battery, given that it's 287KM's to Canberra I would say that it would get there in one charge fairly easily. As for Chinese made you infer that it would be inferior, I dirve a M3P and use an iPhone, both made in China, and it's safe to say that they are pretty decent kit.
@@AndrewThomson888 Hi Andrew, I’m more concerned about future proofing such an expensive purchase. Right now if you are charging from home and getting around the burbs it’s a non issue. If you want to go on road trip and are able to access 250kw plus DC fast chargers in the future, this EVs charge rate will be a problem. As a result the Atto 3 is not for me.
I have seen a few reviews of this car now and every one has been really really positive. It appears to be a very good car that does everything a car needs to do really well or more then good enough. It has the potential to be the top seller EV very quickly.
I've been watching BYD for a while now and I'm so glad you have now done a review on this atto 3 as I really want to change from 1.4 Vauxhall Mokka X to this or BYD seal. I can't wait for them to come to the UK.
It looks FUNKYYYY 😁 byd designer's are thinking out of th box... making cars fun
Elliot - at last a no frills EV. Also Elliot - I've got traction control, I've got parking assist - and a Jet fighter door handle with a speaker in the middle of it. i think I'm getting old as my idea of no frills is a bit different.
Ben: No kidding! I don't think the Atto 3 qualifies in any way as no frills. To me the Fiat 500e, or going back a ways, the Dodge Dart/ Chevy Nova-- those are no frills machines.

It's cheap for a new car these days.
It's cheap when you add in the running costs.

@@FFVoyager Electric cars don't contain the thousands of motor and transmission parts that ICE cars require. With battery prices falling, they should be cheaper to build and maintain.
A first class review as always and the first "sensible" EV I have seen, at least on video. I fear the price will be nearer and on the higher side of £30K in the UK, but it will encourage the European manufacturers to price their wares lower.
European Legacy car builders are struggling to make an affordable desirable EV. Peugeot and Renault are trying but VW et al are living in cloud cuckoo land with their expensive tanks.
Not at all there are very good evs like the Enyak in Europa!
I disagree with the push of “no thrills” it’s got 360 cameras, adaptive cruise control, collision warnings and full sunroof to name a few.
It did seem to have quite a few frills, esp at that price. I think, if it came to the US, it'd be huge.
@@sh969 the only reason it isn't is because I suspect BYD doesn't have the capacity to make them. Which is why it targeting Australia and New Zealand instead two far far smaller markets
And that monster screen in the middle. I'd personally be happier with a conventional audio unit and steering wheel controls, giving a much tidier looking dash layout. That to me, is no frills. Could cut the cost even more, which is the attraction.
I am in NZ and I have ordered the log range version which should be available by the end if August since the .NZ shipment has arrived already. I just wish there were more colour choices.
I'd totally buy it if it had a "normal" interior option! The outside of it is beautiful design!
same here! the interior design is a bit too stretchy for our taste. and if it had faster charging too!
There will probably be "aftermarket" interior upgrades in a little while.
A normal color option for dashboard and seats will be ok. i think.
It has a 80kw fast charging and can reach 90kw in real world.
Good to see Elliot again. This looks like a very good regular EV, if only it would come to the US and be cheap.
So... When is the Military Dictatorship that is China going to condemn HEAD NAZI VLADOLF PUTLER's GENOCIDE and CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY in UKRAINE?
The side profile looks remarkably like my old Hyundai Tucson, a car that I have nothing but good things to say about. And about time the EV OEMs started to just make a car. It will need more kit when it comes to the UK and EU, the safety rules just changed, but it's a car that will sell really well.
I was just thinking it looks like a Tucson, the Chinese are still nicking car designs but at least they’re more subtle about it………..mostly🤟

they just care about profit margins
The Skoda Enyaq I configured came in at an eye watering £44k, and the only ‘frills’ I added were an automatic tail gate and privacy glass for the rear passengers. Given that the Skoda is also a ‘no frills’ EV this Chinese car is a very interesting option. Shame it’s not in the UK.
Presumably that's an 80? My 60 was a fraction over £32k
@@rugbygirlsdadg Yes, Skoda isn't offering the 60 as an option. Apparently, it was taken off of the market due to the level of demand and availability of components. I would have been able to afford the cheaper 60 and the range was not a problem, I only drive further than 250 miles once in a blue moon. I used to do it annually, driving from Northern Germany to Austria to go skiing, but then something happened that made me move back to the UK...
@@rugbygirlsdadg what is really annoying is that at £32k I would have winced but wouldn’t have hesitated to order one. At £44k I just couldn’t stretch myself that far. If they put the 60 back on the market I will consider it again.

One of Elliot’s best videos to date! Thanks for showing us yet another Chinese marvel. It looks like this will be an instant buying option for a lot of Australians, especially due to the V2L option!
Thanks Elliott, we have missed your videos. Nice to know that the Atto is already available in RHD, hopefully coming to Thailand soon. We have heard rumors that BYD will build a factory here to make RHD cars.
Elliot, you have raised the quality bar of reviews so much from your past videos, that I was disappointed with your review of atto3. I was expecting more details about the car, its safety features vs the price. Maybe you have seen so many cars and may have thought that general populace already know most of EV features, but sometimes we need reminding. Was impressed by review from New Zealander RICHARD EDWARDS from EVs and Beyond on atto3. But again, highly appreciate your efforts, and would re-watch your future reviews on Evs.

Great Intro to BYD's "ATTO 3." I agree, Elliot, this is a car with ubiquitous appeal. Destined to hit the mark with those driven to reach their dreams. I'm a planner who understands that to realize my goals, I have to be SMART about it. I think striking the right balance between my wants and my needs--in each primary decision--is empowering. In today's fast paced world, meeting one's personal transportation needs is essential. There are critical resources that must be used wisely. If I fail here, I'm going nowhere. For me, my top 3 are Time, Health, and Money. Elliot, your intro to the ATTO 3 is like no other! BYD has designed with my best interests in mind! ATTO 3, please pass the Test Drive. Great review; lovely basic, straightforward, reasonably sized & priced EV - FINALLY!
Coming to India too. The BYD E6 is a hit in India with decent sales. So it makes sense to launch it here. India is a bigger market than Australia and NZ anyway.
We look forward to this car coming out soon!
Can Elliot borrow one for a few days? I'm sure potential buyers would be interested in the charging speed, true range, fit & finish etc.
Good to see Elliot back.

Thank you Elliot. I hope you are right and this hits the spot here in Oz. This and the MG are in the affordable and good range bracket that should encourage people into EV's.
Hi Elliot, not a bad go at featuring an EV for Australia, well done. We're eagerly awaiting a test drive to compare with the our MG ZS EV. In short BYD Atto 3 is a better car. Its Multi-link rear suspension makes the difference.
Thanks for reviewing such a practical Electric car, sounds like BYD have a winner here.
The decent warranty should be enough to tempt those first time EV buyers.
*So... When is the Military Dictatorship that is China going to condemn HEAD NAZI VLADOLF PUTLER's GENOCIDE and CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY in UKRAINE?*
I want it in the UK and I want it NOW!!
Bring on the Chinese EV's
I doubt BYD is going to the UK anytime soon, but the upcoming MG 4 EV is looking like a pretty good option too.
First of all, BYD needs to meet the expanding customer demand in China before considering expanding the foreign market. BYD's sales in China have increased by more than 300% compared with the same period of last year, and the existing output can't meet the domestic consumers. After all, everyone likes safe and reliable batteries and EV with reasonable and cheap prices.
The good news is that BYD is greatly expanding its production capacity.
It a balancing act if BYD wait to long they may well missed their opportunity to make a impact into those foreign markets, as traditional western manufacturers catch up. However if they move to fast they could suffer reputational damage for not being able to deliver customer orders and possibly from high recall rates.
MG seem to have made a good go off it through, nearly doubling their UK market share in the last couple of years and that almost completely down to its electric vehicles offerings.
This is also why Elon Musk was a bit of a idiot cancelling Tesla sub 25k car. Even if they can't produce many of them or at a profit, it better to establish a foothold into that market segment rather let for example let MG who releasing a 28k hatchback this year gain a foothold and may be even dominate it, if not other competition comes along quick enough.
Which is why GM is threatening a price war, they know ultimately they need to prevent new comers from establishing market share because once they do, it very hard for others to take it away. See how Ford F150 dominates truck sales in the US.
@@DavidKnowles0 MG is a unique case, they've better brand value in EU then in China and I think it's because there are not much affordable ev options available in Europe
"Please Sir, can I have some more?" - excellent, exciting, insightful. Thanks
Love fully charged, and normally Elliot is great, but i think he slightly misses the pulse on this one. The Atto 3 as exported to right hand drive market is pretty much a fully loaded cars, and not a 'no-frills. It has more equipment than the Yuan Plus car Elliot tested, such as it does have electric tailgate, power heated seats, dirac sound, all the latest safety and driver aids, and the surround cameras even include showing what is under the car.
The no-frills part could be that it is neither a supercar (7.3 0-100km/h) all wheel drive or a huge load hauler, and it only add kms when charging at the speed of an iX40 but range is good.
Great review!
There is a huge market for this car in Europe also, where the majority just want a A to B transportation device for their daily 50-100 km, so it is all about simplicity and PRICE. Here the price seems great but the ranges are 100-150 km too short. They have to improve the efficiency alot. Only 320 km with a 50 kWh is not good enough for a relatively small car. With 50 kWh battery they should do at least 400 km WLTP. However it is great with the blade battery and Vehicles To Grid option. I will take this one over the VW ID3.
There is an extended range version with 500KM+ of range.
The AU edition has a few extras that the one you tested doesn't have. I'm at a crossroads as I love the new Kia Niro EV 2023 facelift particularly the different colour c-pillar but then I like what you get for the price on the Atto 3 and it will get Android Auto and Apple Carplay in about Sept/October from what we have been told with a OTA update. Glad to see you back Eliot really hope you can get to FCL Australia in early 2023 as well as DK from South Korea since you are both the Oceania/Asiania correspondents for FC. :)
Elliott!!! 你好!Glad you've made it through the Shanghai lockdown. Keep it up! 谢谢
I like the idea of the door handles, but since you should use the Dutch hand method (ie use the other hand so you lean in which makes it easier to spot cyclists that are coming up behind you) it may make it more difficult to get out
Easily encouraged by moving the handle rearward.
@@iansmith6728 yeah, but it'll still be a twisting motion instead of a pulling motion.
Cool car, nice review. And I like the pride in their logo! Living in Korea, with so much pride in their local cars and industries, I sometimes wondered why they never gave any of their models a Korean name, even with Romanized alphabet spelling. Yes, I know, the international market and all, but still. Now here, BYD has a cool Chinese character logo, and I don't know what it means, but it's great! I'll go look it up now...
BYD uses Chinese dynasties for those characters, this car is named 元 (Yuan) and there's also others such as 宋(Song),汉(Han)and 唐(Tang). Elliot has also covered a few of those in previous episodes if you wanna check them out ;)
@@user-ku6bv4ni2f Thanks!
@@user-ku6bv4ni2f Those were cool names, but it looks like BYD is ditching them because all their new EV platform cars are going with cute ocean animal names (Dolphin, Seal, Sea Lion, Seagull), and even more bizarrely all their new PHEV platform cars are going with not so cute ocean going warship names (Destroyer, Cruiser, etc). I don't know why. The dynasty names were cool and also came with badass looking badges. Ocean critter and ship names are obviously not nearly as cool.
@@tren133 I think those are supposed to be different product segments/series and therefore carry different naming schemes? Most likely BYD will be continuing to use the dynasties scheme but I guess only time will tell
@@user-ku6bv4ni2f I doubt it. The dynasty series cars would have PHEV and EV and ICE versions of the same model (for instance the Han came in both PHEV and BEV versions). But now BYD no longer make ICE cars, and seems to have split their new cars into two ocean series, the ocean animals (BEV only) and warships (PHEV only). These ocean series are getting new models, but none of the dynasty series got new models except the Yuan Plus. The PHEV Destroyer is just a rebadged Qin, which means Qin is probably not getting replaced. The new Seal sedan is similar in size and price to the Han, and the upcoming Sea Lion EV is similar to the Song, so probably Han and Song won't be coming back either.
The internal reminds me of the bridge in the new Star Trek films.
Good to see Elliot is back, I really enjoy his reports.
I´ve been following the evolution of BYD for a while and now even more so, since the company has put Brazil on their map. Started with electric buses and are already selling their cars, with plans for a local factory. Here´s a company that´s not afraid. Nicely crafted details on this one. I, for one, think that some electric vehicle makers try too hard and forget that theses things must be practical, first and foremost. So, well designed and made and still affordable are very desirable features too.
really like that interior. distinctive
We have one ordered, I actually think it looks great inside and out. My wife is excited to see her new car this coming Friday on the Gold Coast at new BYD experience.
G'day Elliot, from sunny Brisbane, Australia. Great to see you again. I put a deposit for the Atto 3 back on February 19, the Australian release date. As for the electric tailgate, I'd rather like one. Considering we are in 2022. Perhaps even ventilated seats. Alas our Australian distributor says no. Anyway I feel privileged to be part of the electric car revolution here in Australia. Once people figure out they can drive for way less compared to current ICE vehicles, with our unleaded E10 hovering between $2.00 - $2.20 per litre and even more expensive for premium 98RON
They used a bean bag as inspiration for all these seats. These are amazing.
But head support not changable in height, not sure of that works for me being 1.93 / 6 ft 4
So glad to see Elliot is back!
Hi from SW France, like this car. I currently have the new Dacia Spring Expression, which I love. I do like a really practical car, and this is super. Like console and all the switches, and that boot space = fantastic. Look forward to seeing it in France.
I like the simple and no frills concept. As a driver, I need to easily adjust the audio (like the volume, track songs) and air-conditioning buttons.
Great review. As an Aussie driving a 2010 Camry Hybrid, I am itching to get into my first EV. The problem has simply been cost of something decent. Aussies are actually usually early adopters of technology and for all the talk about how we are killing the planet, we are closing coal mines (while China and India keep opening new ones) and have the highest private rooftop solar uptake (per capita) of any nation. $52k for a 3 year old Ioniq with 250km useable range?? or $25k-35k for a Nissan that will go 100-150km unless it gets hot - piss off. Give us a decent car with a decent range (300-400km), DC quick charge for when we travel and a battery that still works on a 45 degree day. My Dolphin (Atto3 is still outside my budget) will get a light coloured wrap over the glass roof, as they are terrible on a hot summer day.
BYD汉 ,Nio ES8 ,Nio ET7
I really like the interior. Feel free to sell them in Canada, BYD.
don’t buy chinese cars, it is national security. advice from indian
I love it. The interior is very eventful and not as boring as normal cars 🤷🏼♂️
Glad to cya again!! And i really like to see more of you.
What an absurdly dashing man
It’s great to see Elliot’s journey as a presenter, top class episode 👌😊
you can see his confidence grow, nice to see :)
This exactly the no frills , less tech & practical EV I have been wanting to own!! Hope its sold in my country soon!
I'm glad you said that was a microphone in the boot.
It looks like a car I would be happy driving but the price conversions to UK put the car in the same bracket as ones with frills.
So install 4 Powerwalls for $60K, or buy one of these in 60kWh spec and get a free car and over 10K change to spend on the extra solar panels to keep it charged. Seems like a good deal. But change the front dash, all those folds are a bit labia-like. What were they thinking? Designers in lock-down and frustrated?
I actually love the interior - it looks rather extraterrestrial - and I love anything out of this world. A lot of sci-fi enthusiasts will have literal “nerdgasms” taking in the fascinating and futuristic interior design. Personally, I love it 🥰
Great review, especially because I'll own one in a few weeks in NZ. But curious you didn't even comment on how it drives!
Have you got a delivery date, Ben? I see some dealers are now saying Oct/Nov delivery.
@@snich63 no I don't have a delivery date but I understand that it's optimistically mid August
Very glad it's coming to Australia. I actually like the interior, but I dare say most of us would prefer something with a more basic interior with more conventional components to bring the price down further. There's plenty of interest here for new electric cars, but most of us just can't afford them. Things will start shifting when we can buy EVs in the 30-something or 20-something K price range, and many of us would be happy to put up with a simpler wash-down interior to get it.
I wonder if licensing their vehicles through an established marque might be a better strategy, though MG seem to be doing quite well down here with their cheap little ICE hatchbacks.
We've had ours since mid-September 2022 and we LOVE it!!! Super car for the money. Thank you to Fully Charged who aided my research into BYD well before we learnt they were coming here (Tasmania). I had our deposit in an hour after they opened the order books. Not a single regret!
Elliot is the new definition of dashing!
Dashing is in the eye of the beholder.
I think it’s great that they've tried to keep things simple. Who really needs a motorised boot opening? Come on..be honest! That only means extra expense and weight. Surely the way European manufacturers should go. Strive for lightness and simplicity.
Thanks for the video. I am very interested in trying this car. Finally, a basic car is arriving in Australia.
Interesting basic EV. It should allow many people to more easily convert over to this new technology. Thanks for the review.
Keep em coming, eventually they might get it right lol.
What people really want in large numbers is a simple golf size car that cheap and reliable with half decent range, it's really not difficult.
But atm everything they can make will sell so there is no need for them to do better.
It’s sad the Segment A basically disappeared, in the length of 4000-4200 mm we have Renault Zoe, Peugeot e208, Chevrolet Bolt, Byd Atto 2, and then the worldwide availability of those is patchy at best. Then we get the “compacts” that near almost 5 meters or the full catalog of suv blobs available everywhere.
We need Ford to make a straight forward Fiesta and Focus EV.
Is 30K cheap? lol.
For me, a no frills car is a car with wind down windows. It has just enough to get you from A to B. The only electric thing should be whatever it needs to make the battery, motor and headlights work.
Can't easily do that with modern safety requirements.
Have one EV one ICE & now looking forward to BYD dolphin or seagull in Oz to go electron only. Personally I admire both the Chinese logo & original names more than ‘Atto’. Thank you Elliot and FC team for another great episode
Are they going to bring the Dolphin here tho? It was originally ment to be BYD's Australian debut car, but those plans got changed to this Atto 3 instead.
I want the Dolphin, coz it's smaller, looks better, and is even cheaper (25% less) than the Atto 3.
But this is Australia, so i consider us lucky to be getting anything at all 🙏🏼.
@@roidroid BYD Oz have committed to Seal, then Dolphin. Am waiting for the Dolphin too. Not patiently wait.
Did I miss the price. As always, a great review. Thanks.
That interior's fine by fine - few fancy touches but largely clean and simple. And no concern about "plush plastics" nor big amounts of electronic control/infotainment. Beyond the now mandated (EU) basics of course.
Hope it comes to the UK : would be a good alternative to the Stellantis ev crowd.
I was thinking it shouldn't have any problem coming here now it's in Oz, the steering is on the right side and that's all it needs unless our safety standards are stronger than down there putting BYD off.
@@will4may175 Atto 3 scored 5 stars in Euro-NCAP and China actually has tougher safety standards than both Oz and Europe, C-IASI has been doing small overlap for years now.
@@jzvr5842 That's good then, I do know a lot of US made cars don't make it over to UK because of safety standards here.
The Atto 3 though would suffer the same as other cheaper cars from around the world coming to UK, and that's the huge price hike, I understand shipping costs but our Gov love to get their grubby hands on any cash possible so taxes push import prices up
@@jzvr5842 OK so apparently they should be selling here 2022 but doubt it in 9 days, Atto 3 is put at £34k but could rise, which is MG4 higher spec pricing.
I’m interested to see how this goes in Australia. We tend to be brand junkies, but on the other hand all the name brands are sold out till mid next year.
Adds Four: I'd be interested to hear how service goes. Re regular maintenance, dealing with problems, how long it takes to get in, and what any alternatives are (like can normal mechanics do minor service and checks and keep the warranty intact?
Oh, and what the normal recommended service costs at the dealer.
All these sorts of things matter to modern regular middle class people who care about practicality, convenience, and true TCO.
@@rogergeyer9851 reliability will be interesting. Electric cars don’t get serviced as often as combustion engine, so it will take a while for that info to be available. Their website is quoting 4 months for delivery from order date, which is good for any new car, and crazy good for electric, given wait times for tesla, Kia and Hyundai of 12 months. Overall though, I would expect Chinese to be reliable; I mean everybody says tesla is better made now it’s made in china!
@@addsfour3499 China's BYD and CATL are also the world leaders in battery tech, so Chinese EVs esp. BYD are definitely reliable.
Excellent review from Elliot, as always.
Enjoyed the video and the car reminds me of my car from side view of a Vauxhall Corsa E Elite Nav 👌 which is no bad thing ! Keeping a look out in UK when it arrives.
What BYD accomplished with the latest EVs is nothing short of amazing. I do not like the interior too much, but the entire package and the blade LFP battery are great, also their design have personality, it's very good! BYD is an amazing company. I just hope to China stop doing genocide and threatening Australia and the US with nuclear war. What a shame.
You’re watching too much bs in the media…China wants what everyone wants…success
@@peewii4326 Those are words of China politicians threatening everyone, don't put the media or anyone else on this. China was condemned for genocide on the UN, this also, is not about the media. The entire world know what is happening there with the Uyghurs. Not only that: HK is also, a huge shame. China threatening Australia with fake news, because a nuclear submarine is about propulsion, not weapons. It's grave, and if China really wants success, they need to respect human rights, and get a democratic system for real.
I can see that western media has done a very good brainwashing job on you. What a shame.
I really like simplistic cars. Automatic transmission, electric windows, A/C, and radio system are enough luxuries for 75% of people. I doubt even cruise control is used by 10% of drivers.
Less weight, less to break.
Auto Cruise is a game changer.
Set and steer. It is so less taxing and more efficient. Safe gaps are maintained.
I love it.
@@garethneal82 Yeah, there is value in that one! lol! I'd pick that over power door locks in a heartbeat.
also actual buttons that go click when you press them. Not everything on a giant touchscreen bolted onto the dashboard.
I will never, ever buy a car without adaptive cruise control again.
what a cool interior! great job they did!
Great review! Just waiting for this model to be announced for the UK market then I’ll make my just to an EV, probably this model!
I had a good look at the LHD display models of the Atto 3 and Dolphin at BYD's showroom in Sydney. To me, the interior of the Dolphin actually felt plusher than that of the Atto 3.
I thought the Atto 3 was fine, though, and it will appeal to a lot of people Personally, the one thing I didn't like was the front air vents. They felt cheap and fragile. Everything else felt solid, and the ergonomics were great: I really liked the mix of buttons and screen, which should be very intuitive to use. And for a smallish car there was a lot of room inside. The MG ZS EV, the most obvious competitor, has done well here, and I think the Atto 3 will do even better.
The only challenge BYD faces here is that the importer, EV Direct, seems to keep messing things up. It's been promising and delaying, promising and delaying for well over a year, and while this appears to be an EV Direct problem rather than a BYD problem, I think it risks damaging the credibility of the BYD brand in Australia.
I didn’t catch a mention of charging speed? How fast can it recharge? Aussies love their lengthy road trips 🙂
Just 80 kW ...🤨
🎓
Great to have another video from you Elliot.
Good review Elliot - Will be nice to see BYD setup properly in the UK, its a regular looking car so would do well here
