    Thank you so much for your videos and motivation. I have a 69 le mans I'm working on it has a pontiac 350 that I blew the motor now in the process of rebuilding. Had a cousin give me a 81 trans am that has a 301. Had a lot of negative opinions about this engine and was going to get rid of it. Now I know how rare and amazing these pontiac blocks are im never letting go of my pontiac.. thanks again.

      @@Steve-p6v I really appreciate 🙏 the kind words!!! I need motivation myself sometimes so I'm deeply humbled that it helped you out! Wait until you see the next plans for this motor and another 301 stroker I have planned....it should be epic!

    That's one mean little 301. I think what you're doing is awesome. Thanks for showing us your work. Hopefully thanks to you, the last of the legendary Pontiac V8 gets some respect. Good luck at the track.

    This is the only hopped up 301 I've seen, love seeing quirky different stuff out there!
    How high of rpm are you twisting it? Seems like the bore/stroke would make it wanna rev, but the weaknesses prevent that.

      @@AEtrane just had it on the dyno. It went to 6500 rpm several times, nothing is hurt thankfully! Thanks for the kind words. More to come!

    Super awesome build!!!...question... Are you using a stock 301 crankshaft? ...and what rpm are you reving up to?

    • @PontiacRaysGarage
      @PontiacRaysGarage  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks for the kind words. Yes, the crankshaft is stock, and the last passes it made was shifting at 5,000 rpm. Next time out, I will be shifting at 5500 rpm or higher, it's getting a larger cam right now.

    What tracks do you run at? You wouldn't happen to make it to New England, would you? Check out TTA performance, if you haven't already. Joe is extremely knowledgeable on these motors, and I'm sure he'ld love to see your ride. .

    • @PontiacRaysGarage
      @PontiacRaysGarage  6 месяцев назад

      Sorry, I'm in Southern California and race at the local tracks here. I can assure you, Joe at TTA performance can restore a 1980-81 Turbo Trans Am, but knows nothing about a conventional headed 301 engine, as he is barely building his first one currently. He offered a conversion head gasket for this swap that failed, never worked correctly, and he never tested it himself. This car runs as fast or faster, naturally aspirated on 91 octane pump gas, than Joe's turbo TA does on a E85 and a roller cam.

    • @joequillun7790
      @joequillun7790 6 месяцев назад

      @@PontiacRaysGarage to be fair, Ray, Joe's gaskets are in the "preliminary" stages, and he has done testing on stock iron 301 heads, and has done extensive testing on many other "turbo" engines...successfully. How-ever, he has never worked a traditional head swap, or an aftermarket aluminum head, like your set-up. You never mentioned what times your car pulls...quarter mile. Many of us can't relate to this new 1/8th mile. Also remember, his cars are all steel, and weigh quite a bit more than yours.

    • @PontiacRaysGarage
      @PontiacRaysGarage  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@joequillun7790 you aren't aware that Joe released a copper head gasket over 10 years ago that was supposed to allow the conversion to be possible. They were $300 gaskets, which Joe never tested himself, and the few sets that were sold, all failed, including on one of his friend's/customer's vehicles. As far as Joe testing on many other turbo engines, you are correct, and they are all slow....every single one of them. Joe, with more modifications, is slower than Rick Unterseh who is restricted by NHRA stock eliminator rules and can't run ported heads, more valve lift, ported intake, roller cam, etc. As I said before, Joe can restore a 1980-81 Trans Am, but I would never, ever seek his advice for performance. 1/8 mile times have been around for 50 years, and there's a common NHRA conversion for them. This car has run 8.40 @ 86.29mph with it having too loose of a converter (40%) slip, and only revving it to 5000 rpm. That translates to a 13.10 @ 108mph in the 1/4 mile. This car weighs 3300lbs, which is only a few 100 lbs lighter than Joe's, and again, I'm on 91 octane pump gas, 9.2:1, flat tappet cam. Joe is running a roller cam and 15lbs of boost and E85 with fuel injection.....and still isn't faster than Rick Unterseh with a flat tappet cam and stock everything. Not impressed.

      Joe is good at restoration but needs to leave the 301 performance to one's that know performance

      @@PontiacRaysGarage Not sure when you've last checked out Joes channel Ray, but his all steel AC, automatic, 3.08 geared street tired T/A is now mid 12s. It's not stock, of course, and he also just built a 301T (modified) making over 400 HP on the dyno, steel heads stock crank, less than 5K RPMs. Pretty impressive. As for the head gaskets, (10 yrs ago), don't know much about them, but he now has a new manufacturer making another set, that he's been testing, with good results. You should cut him some slack. He seems like a decent guy.
      By the way, I saw you comment on another video, some-one with a huffer on an Olds, and 301, (in the process). Looks pretty promising. Amazing these engs. are getting some attention. Good luck with yours this spring.

    I have another question... what year 301 block are you running? I hear that the 1980-81 blocks are beefier than the 79 & older blocks

    • @PontiacRaysGarage
      @PontiacRaysGarage  6 месяцев назад +1

      This particular block is the worst one, a 1977 block....which is why I'm beating it up with no regard lol. The 1980-81 Turbo blocks are the best, casting is 301T. I have a few of those, and am currently building a stroker version that will be well over 383 cubic inches. This 77 block has held up so far, based on ET, weight and mph, this is making at least 350hp, which is over double the factory rating as you know.

    • @raysoto1969
      @raysoto1969 6 месяцев назад +2

      @PontiacRaysGarage That is amazing... I guess 301's are stronger than most people give them credit for. You are one of the very few actually putting them to the test. Keep up the great work!
