  • Children offer their unique take on the meanings of navel, paisley scarf, insincerity, sexist and feminist.
Twink (Adèle King) asks school children the meaning of a range of words. Their answers provide some unorthodox and novel definitions.
Opening with the question what do people eat in Tubbercurry? The answers range from rice, noodles, soup and spaghetti to tubs of curry and ice-cream.
The children are not sure what a navel is and navel gazing is equally confusing, with one boy deciding it is
When the navy comes back and they’re all gazing at all the blondes on the beach.
Peter says a paisley scarf is
Something that Ian Paisley wears to keep him warm.
    Derval defines insincerity as
    Men, their insincerity to women.
    A sectarian
Is a man that works in an office and he has a girl taking down all of his notes.
Vincent clearly defines a chauvinist pig as
A man who does something rude to a woman and the woman slaps him in the face and says you male chauvinist pig.
On the other hand a feminist is
Someone who works in a chemist and they get medicine for people.
The children have numerous definitions for a sexist but when asked about the difference between a sexist and feminist, one boy says
Gay Byrne’s a feminist and Mike Murphy is a sexist.
‘The Live Mike’ first aired on RTÉ 1 on 9 November, 1979 and was billed as an hourly, Friday night programme of comment, entertainment and surprises. The programme also contained a candid-camera slot in which Mike Murphy and his team took on many disguises.
This episode of ‘The Live Mike’ was broadcast on 25 February 1983. The reporter is Twink.
