The St Lawrence family have lived in this castle in Ireland for almost 800 years. The Irish Passport podcast met the current heir, Julian Gaisford-St Lawrence, to find out more about what it's like to keep a castle in the family for 35 generations. Our visit was a glimpse into the fading world of the lost tribe of aristocrats that once ruled Ireland.
To hear from Julian Gaisford-St Lawrence and to find out about the decline of Ireland's once-mighty Anglo-Irish aristocracy, listen to our episode 'Elites'. The Irish Passport is a podcast on Irish culture, history and politics made by Naomi O'Leary and Tim McInerney. What a dulcet Irish brogue! Unmistakable. One wouldn’t hesitate to identify a fellow Irishman upon hearing it.
Great to see with all its original interiors and furniture.
Thanks for posting.
And Julian Gaisford st lawrence went and sold everything lock stock and barrell to an American investment (developer) company
And stripped the castle of everything on the way out.
Class... style..... no just rapacious bottom feeders.
That's so sad! Most people in those situations feel a deep obligation to their forebears and to society at large. That's a chunk of Irish history lost. What's happened to it now?
@@LuciThomasHardylover-qx6ts At the moment Tetrarch are trying to get the land rezoned to build on it but were unsuccessful this round, but I am sure they will keep trying, all the contents of the castle like artwork, furniture etc were all packed up and auctioned off to god knows were which is so tragic
That is a disgrace to sell it to an American investment company. That castle should have been preserved and kept for the Irish nation.
Can’t here a thing for the screeching in the background.
how does it feel you were the keeper of the key for future generations. fucked it up the last in a line for a thousand years. Your ancestors would be proud.
A commodius vicus of recirculation brought me back here.
Ireland hasn't been cruel nor kind to her aristocrats. Should one be happy or sad?
Read some history of the War of Independence and the Civil War, you might develop a different understanding.
