I honestly doubt that the news were broken down to the queen in detail by the prime minister's oral report irl - it would have been way to embarrassing for the both of them. but it works well in the dramatization, nice second-hand cringe for the audience.
some one it’s 3 very simple limericks. If you can remember them quite easily after watching this scene then you have memory problems. Lmfao. And the primeminister would’ve had the benefit of reading them in print. Which would’ve been much easier to remember.

She takes her roles seriously and puts in a lot of effort and research, she actually tried to contact Princess Margaret during seances on the set to ask for advice as to how she should be portrayed.
The Queen is unamused because 1. she's heard all of them a million times before and 2. she's embarrassed that her sister's comic material consists of her Dad's old jokes.
I thought it could be a bit heartwarming, since her sister is pulling out their late father's old jokes, if I were the the Queen, I would go "aw, papa's favorite words, she remembers. "
In the very first episode, King George was also telling dirty limericks. I like to think this was another way the show was connecting Margaret to her father. Elizabeth shared his sense of responsibility and duty but Margaret had his more fun, playful nature.
If I’m not mistaken, it was Peter Townsends who calmed and entertained the late King with a dirty limerick. I wonder if this scene is a recall to the two influential men who left their mark on Margaret, even well after their untimely exit from her personal life.
Linda shi Yes, but to be able to say off-colour stuff like that to George VI, must mean that the king is okay with having it said around him, if only in private.
@@davidw.2791 I think it also shows that “Locker Room Talk” is beneath very few men save for a few Uber religious ones, even a King. In the private company of just other close men, the King probably did talk about things like that from time to time.

I love how the scene change from Princess Margaret raucous laughter with the President to Elizabeth and PM's silence and echoing clock ticking. Shows how different the two sisters are.
Apparently Queen Elizabeth had a great sense of humour but her position didn't allow her to show it in public. Princess Anne spoke of a gift her mother received in the 70s on a trip to Australia. It was a mechanical gloved hand on a lever that waved to and fro, for when her real hand got tired of waving. Some university students pushed through the crowd and presented it to the Queen in person, probably thinking they were being daring and cheeky but the Queen absolutely loved it and told them so. According to Anne, she loved it so much that it ended up on display at Balmoral and became a much loved family joke.
I’ve never laughed this hard in my life. I’ve loved this scene soooo much. But the lovely thing is that Margaret, even saying rude words with that accent, still looks elegant and eloquent. Loving her.💕
"was blessed with a very large johnson" "where is the rest of it?" "Everyone thought it was long enough... as it were" HA HA. The whole scene is comedy gold. Love the prime minister's delivery. You can tell he is visibly uncomfortable with reciting these dirty limericks to the Queen.
Simple. It's called repetition. The words are rehearsed so many times that they loose their humourous effect and become just lines to repeat. If done by two performers they can deliver it easily and flawlessly, it could also work in a small group, but becomes very difficult in groups of 10 people or more, because one could break and be reminded of the humour (or see a new angle of the joke) and laugh breaking character and causing a domino effect that will make everyone else around laugh. The problem with using this method in certain performances, such as in theater, is it is done in front of a first time audience and their reaction (the audience) could crack even the best seasoned performers (laughter is infectious after all). On TV or Film things are much easier although I believe the filming crew on set will be the main cause of concern not the performers and might have to witness many pretake rehearsals of the lines (but as mentioned above you can do it in small groups so a small filming crew filming two people is ideal). This is how I'd do it if I was the director. The real conversation with Queen Elizabeth was probably both embarrassing and infuriating so it is easy to imagine how the conversation went in real life (the last line was a direct insult to the person of the Queen herself).
Olivia Colman's deadpan demeanor (Elizabeth is no stranger to Margaret's behavior), Jason Watkins' boyish nervousness, and Helena Bonham Carter's free-spirited charm all make this hysterical scene.
This is why I love Olivis Coleman. In two syllables (bravo) she can say "I'm impressed with her creativity but also resentful that I'm not allowed to be creative in the same way"
My uncle used to work on her boat when he was a young man and chat with her all the time while he worked. Once when they were interrupted, she told the person to "Fuck off, I'm talking with Reggie!"

My most favourite episode of the Crown! The conversation of the Prime Minister explaining to the Queen about what went on was hilarious! In the end, Princess Margaret did well diplomatically in the United States. She greased the wheels for the loan!
True, but sadly, according to former Lyndon B. Johnson aide and friend Lloyd Hand, who had actually been at this very dinner and ball, this whole scene is fiction. There were actually a few other things that happened. While Princess Margaret did make rude comments, it certainly wasn't about Kennedy, but the entire establishment of Hollywood, practically insulting Grace Kelly and Judy Garland, the latter of whom openly called Margaret a "rude little princess". There was also the wardrobe malfunction of Cynthia Ford, wife of Henry Ford II, who was dancing with then defense secretary Robert McNamara, and her breast slipped out of the top of her dress in front of everyone! There was also Princess Margaret's own open indignation during the dancing when her husband, then Lord of Snowdon Antony, was dancing with Lloyd Hand's own wife, rather than Margaret herself, his own wife!
Just for the bants, imagine the Queen being replaced in this scene by Charles Dance’s portrayal of Tywin Lannister. With Tyrion and Ser Bronn in the background for effect. Fireworks.
