  • On a wet and windy day, I took refuge in a cathedral, mass was on so I sat and waited quietly. I noticed beautiful plaques and a stunning room that held the most amazing effigy. Mass ended and the Dean came and spoke with me, invited me to video and gave me a history lesson of George Berkeley.
"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" is a philosophical thought experiment that raises questions,
    regarding observation and perception
The answer, according to George, is that yes, it did make a sound, because God heard it. .
George Berkeley (12 March 1685 - 14 January 1753) - known as Bishop Berkeley (Bishop of Cloyne of the Anglican Church of Ireland) - was an Anglo-Irish philosopher whose primary achievement was the advancement of a theory he called "immaterialism" (later referred to as "subjective idealism" by others). This theory denies the existence of material substance and instead contends that familiar objects like tables and chairs are ideas perceived by the mind and, as a result, cannot exist without being perceived. Berkeley is also known for his critique of abstraction, an important premise in his argument for immaterialism.
In 1709, Berkeley published his first major work, An Essay Towards a New Theory of Vision, in which he discussed the limitations of human vision and advanced the theory that the proper objects of sight are not material objects, but light and colour. This foreshadowed his chief philosophical work, A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge, in 1710, which, after its poor reception, he rewrote in dialogue form and published under the title Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous in 1713, In this book, Berkeley's views were represented by Philonous (Greek: "lover of mind"), while Hylas ("hyle", Greek: "matter") embodies the Irish thinker's opponents, in particular John Locke.
Berkeley argued against Isaac Newton's doctrine of absolute space, time and motion in De Motu (On Motion), published 1721. His arguments were a precursor to the views of Ernst Mach and Albert Einstein.] In 1732, he published Alciphron, a Christian apologetic against the free-thinkers, and in 1734, he published The Analyst, a critique of the foundations of calculus, which was influential in the development of mathematics.
Interest in Berkeley's work increased after World War II because he tackled many of the issues of paramount interest to philosophy in the 20th century, such as the problems of perception, the difference between primary and secondary qualities, and the importance of language.

What a beautiful alabaster Effigy. He was a very free thinking man. Then to have Berkeley college named after him. That college is also a very free thinking establishment.

Very, very informative Sue. The inside of the church was pristine for its age and the headstones were really are showing their age! I so wish I was there.

Wow they certainly packed the graveyard with the dead . I wonder if it was the only place to be buried around there ? The inside of the church was beautiful and ancient a place you could spend hours in . So much history inside and out . I wonder what the little cage was on that grave . I hope the cat was ok . Thank you Serenity Sue for a lovely walk and that you both got wet feet suffering for your art ❤️ x

Thanks for bringing us along Sue! Cloyne Catherdral is just beautiful and George Berkeley's effigy is an absolute masterpiece!
And you're right, University of California-Berkeley was indeed named after George Berkeley. Back in the 1960's there were some crazy things going on there (Among other places!) so it got the name "Berserkley!" And it's been known by name that on-and-off ever since!
And in case you don't know, that banner hanging on the wall near Berkeley's effigy is the state flag of Rhode Island.
    Thanks again!

I watched a cemetery video the other day from here in The States Sue, that had 2 Graves with similar cages on them. They were called hooded graves. The thinking was that the people buried there were believed to be vampires. The hoods would prevent them from getting out. Happy Halloween!

Beautiful cathedral, and so full of history. Bishop Berkeley's tomb was
    fascinating! The graveyard was very
interesting, a nice mixture of old and new. Is it still in use? Ireland does not own the market in " overgrown. "
Oregon can get overgrown pretty fast as well, especially in the northwestern part, where I live.
In fact, I have a bit of a ivy problem in my back yard. Any advice?
